A boy was watching his father, a pastor, write a sermon.
"How do you know what to say?" he asked.
"Why, God tells me," the father answered.
The boy replied, "Oh, then why do you keep crossing things out?"

Whenever I speak in front of the church, I write my sermon, practice it, take it with me to the podium -- then walk away from the podium and give a whole different talk on whatever God just put in my mouth. It's amazing.
However, if I don't plan a sermon and take it to the podium, God doesn't come up with a topic for me! I think it is the prep and focus -- the time spent in prayer and communion with God, more than the prepared script.
I don't know if those dynamics would change if I spoke more than once or twice a year. (I next serve from the podium at the evening service on November 18th. It will be my first time speaking to this congregation -- and my last, since we will move shortly after.
I'll have to show this go my hubby.
