Random Wednesday

I never should have typed this sentence in yesterday's post:
So I don't care if the swine flu or any other disaster befalls us, we will be at that appointment this Saturday!
Because you know what happened. When I picked my girl up after school, she was almost in tears: "I ache all over and it hurts when I cough!" Sure enough, her temp was almost 101 when we got home. Sigh. At least she already had a doctor's appointment this morning - we'll just be changing that from a well-check to a flu-check!

(I'm sure you've all heard what the difference is between bird flu and swine flu, right? With bird flu, you have to get a series of tweetments, but with swine flu, they just prescribe some oinkment.)

Lid over at 2nd Cup of Coffee obviously has waaaay too much time on her hands. These seem to get progressively harder each week!

1. On an average, how often do you splurge and buy something for yourself?

Clothes - not often; a couple of times a year. Books - much less often now that I get to review them! (Smile.) A fancy coffee - once a week while my kids are at Bible Study on Wednesday nights. It's my tradition to go to either Starbucks or It's a Grind and sip and read.

2. Are you more like Hall or Oates? Just kidding. Real question: What is the last creative project you began/finished? Feel free to post a pic of it.

I'm not creative with "things" - paint and glue and tulle make me hyperventilate. My creativity runs more with words. I generally write our family Christmas newsletter in the form of a poem, and I wrote a poem about my mother's hands a couple of days before she died.

3. OK, Goldie Locks, do you consider your house too big, too little or juuuust right?

Just right. Any bigger and we'd just get even more stuff.

4. What is your favorite outdoor chore?

Bringing in the mail. I'm serious! I get migraines if I'm outside very long. As in 10 minutes in the sun.

5. If you knew that cigarette smoking was not bad for your health but would be a weight loss tool, would you use it? Why or why not?

NO. It stinks. It's expensive. And it would be just trading one addiction/form of bondage for another.

6. On a road trip, would you rather drive or ride?

With my man, I'd rather ride. With anyone else, I'd rather drive.

7. What do you consider a trivial pursuit?

Oh, this isn't what she means?! I waste time on plenty of trivial pursuits. But one that always amazes me is the amount of time people (usually guys) spend poring over sports statistics and how they can recite every detail of so many games from years back. It just seems like completely useless information.

8. This weekend, we downloaded the movie "Duplicity" with Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. Within 5 minutes, I was bored and annoyed, but I kept watching 5-10 minutes at a time hoping it would get better between small chores. I finally gave up and Jorge watched it alone, and then regretted wasting that time because he disliked it intensely, too. So ... how long do you watch a movie or read a book before giving up on it?

If I'm watching a movie with the family, I'll usually stick it out for the togetherness. Otherwise, I'd say 15 minutes. And a couple of chapters on a book.

9. Is there a song that you really love but are embarrassed to admit because it's not cool or it's racy or because it's by Hall and Oates?

I've always been uncool because I've always loved the old songs from way back. Like from the 1930's and 1940's. And even older. Dare I type this? I used to pretend I was on the Lawrence Welk show (one of the fun young girls, not Norma Zimmer!).

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a song I always loved in high school was Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band. I loved the harmony. But it's a bit racy for a teenager!

10. On a scale of 1-10 (10 = extremely) how spontaneous are you?
When I first read this question Tuesday, I thought "yeah, I'm pretty spontaneous." I can happily go out to eat even if I have dinner planned.

Then I walked in the bedroom and saw that my sweet man had made the bed. And Tuesdays are the day I wash our sheets!!! Deep breath. Must. Be. Spontaneous. I will wash sheets Wednesday. (Seriously, there was a time I would have unmade the bed to keep my schedule. I've come a long way, baby. Especially now that I don't have napping-age kids.) So maybe I'll say a 7.

11. Are you a food and/or beverage snob?
A bit. Especially with desserts. I strongly prefer them homemade from scratch. Just the way I was brought up. And for the most part, if it's not exceptionally good, I'm not going to waste calories eating it. And I despise diet sodas.

12. Who/What are you trying to control in your life?

Gee, she's going beyond random to meddling! LOL I am really working on not having to be in control. I'm trying to just control myself.

Check out all the other random answers over at Lid's!

Linda -- your spontaneous is changing laundry days -- my spontaneous is quitting a tenured position and moving to Hawaii with a guy I met online. Still think you're a 7? ;)

I hope your daughter is feeling better. I lifted her -- your whole family -- up in prayer.

Ooooo... sorry about that Baby Girl! Prayers said -- hope she feels better soon!

My husband complained the other day that our house is "cramped"... I've been complaining about this for at least 5 years! I said "we have too much STUFF"... he said "then get rid of it"... the problem is that the STUFF he wants to get rid of is you know... the vacuum and my exercise bike and the stereo. I want to get rid of 6 televisions! LOL! Of course, we have 3 kids worth of "storage" in the basement ... waiting for them to get houses so they can store their own stuff! Anyway... you're RIGHT - more space = more STUFF! Phoooey!

#12 - LOL!!!

Your answers always make me laugh. I am totally with you on the crafty stuff. Going into Michael's to pick up something simple just makes me break out in hives. LOL.

Loved the poem about your mom's hands.

Hope your girls feels better soon! They closed my son's school for the rest of the week because 1/4 of the whole school was out, including several teachers.

I so understand #19. There was a time when I would have changed the sheets, too. I have learned to go with the flow a little better.

And I am so with you on sports statistics!!

Oh, you strike again with your witticisms and puns (oinkment.)

First of all, I hope your girl is much, much better by today (Friday). Bless her heart.

#7: Sports Stats. GREAT answer.

Afternoon Delight?? Are you kidding?! That is so not you, even 25 years ago. Even though I didn't know you 25 years ago, I know this must have been guilt-producing for you. I'm blusing right now. :)
