Flashback Friday (Frightful) Fashions

(BTW, I do have a reflective Good Friday post with some beautiful music below this one!)

Welcome to Flashback Friday! Today we're rolling back the clock to take a look at some of our fashion memories!

The flashback this week surrounds our fashion memories. You may elaborate on your childhood Easter fashionsand/or share about styles in general. What fashions were popular when you were growing up? (Any time from birth to high school graduation) What did you beg to wear? What style did you happily embrace that you now look back and think, "Ugh! Whatever possessed me to wear that? ( Of course, pictures would be great - the more hideous embarrassing, the better!) Have any of these come back into style? What have you worn that you vowed you never would? (You can also include hairstyles in your walk down Memorial Fashions Lane!)

MY FLASHBACK:
Since last Friday's Easter Flashback, I discovered I did have some pictures of a couple of Easter dresses! I think these were the Easters when I was 4 and 5. So that would put these over 40 years ago, in the mid-1960s! I just vaguely remember my mom wearing hats. That style went out in my early elementary days.

I was pretty cute as a little kid, if I do say so myself, but it quickly started going downhill!

My mom sewed the vast majority of my clothes (and those of my sisters). In the early 1970s the maxi dress was popular. I know I had at least one dress that went all the way to the floor. Then the trend went to the opposite extreme in the mid-1970s! I remember that we tried to talk my mom into making the hems shorter than she wanted to. We didn't want anything indecent, but we didn't want to wear granny dresses!

My main memory concerns the debate of dresses vs. pants. While "pantsuits" (remember the double knit ones?! Shudder!) finally came into style when I was in late elementary school, we still had to wear dresses to school. I also remember my dad always making us wear dresses when we went out of town to see grandparents. I remember occasionally getting to wear pants to school in junior high - only on very cold days and I had to ask permission to do so. I remember in junior high wearing knee socks in a color that coordinated with the dress!

In late junior high/early high school I remember "smock tops" being all the rage. The "smock" didn't mean what it does now for children's clothes (the kabillion tiny pleats). These were long tops with a high yoke and then gathers to make the rest of the top full. They usually buttoned down the front and were so comfortable!

Finally, when I was in high school, my folks relented and let me wear pants/jeans to school whenever I wanted. But church was another matter entirely! When we moved at the end of my sophomore year and joined a new church (that was part of my First Date Flashback), it was 1977 and everyone wore pants to church on Sunday nights. Except me. Only on the nights that we were having a youth fellowship afterwards and going bowling or something like that did I get to wear pants.

Hairstyles make me shudder. In sixth grade I had a "pixie" haircut, and short hair, glasses, and buck teeth were such a pleasing combination!

(My grandmother made that necklace - crocheted with sparkly gold crochet thread and red beads!)

Then, horror of horrors, when it was growing out, my mom decided to give me a perm! She liked it so well she took pictures of it! I, on the other hand, hated it!

Even after the perm wore off, I still had ugly short hair. And since the trend was the side part, it's a wonder I didn't continually tilt my head to the right! This is my 9th grade school picture. This was one of my favorite dresses my mom made. And I remember wearing it with gold knee socks! (Could my glasses be any bigger?!

In the early 1980s, about the time I graduated from college, life had progressed from shag carpet to shag haircuts. At least I had contacts by this point! I traded big glasses for big hair!

One style I remember being very reluctant and rather slow to embrace as an adult was capris. Now I love them, but when they first came out, they reminded me way too much of the ghastly old "pedal pushers" from the 1960s!

Enough already! Thirty years from now I wonder which of today's clothes will horrify me! Please tell me I'm not the only one with ugly pictures!

I could've written this post, had I been lucid and not distracted, but that's just how much my life parallels yours in fashion and church etiquette.

Maybe I need glasses but I don't think you looked bad at all! Wow, I didn't know women were allowed to wear pants to church as early as the 70's. My church would have had a cow!

Linda, what a great fun post. I loved the smock tops. Wish they were back in style.

Oooooh! A walk down memory lane! Fashions are so predictable. If you don't like one, you don't have long to wait to try on a new one!

Maxi dresses...those were so weird. And we have one photo where my entire family wore the exact same sweater..the men in brown slacks, the women in blue maxi skirts. We looked so square!!

I remember those smock tops -- I hated them even though they were comfortable because when I wore them... I looked pregnant! Never mind that everyone else did too! A fat kid was very self-conscious about that! I really couldn't believe when they started coming back! But at 53 I feel entirely different about them! I'm pretty certain NO ONE will mistake me for pregnant! :)

I did like maxi dresses though! I had a few of them for "special" occassions.

I couldn't let myself DO the whole BIG hair thing - even though my hair was PERFECT for it... I was too busy trying to get OVER not being able to do the long straight hair thing!!! You had great BIG hair though!

Honestly I think we grew up through some of the worst fashion history EVER! LOL!

This was fun and a learning about the US for me, a sort of history lesson.
Thanks, Linda!

We're of the same era :-) I remember my first (also ghastly) perm at about age 10. The sides stuck out and kind of up, reminding me of Bozo the Clown. Hideous! LOL And then trying to out-do Farrah Fawcett with the Farrah cut. Didn't work real well with my fine, very thin hair :-)

I remember maxi dresses, smock tops...the whole bit. Thanks for the tour down memory lane :-)

That's funny you mention the capris. I thought about them as I was thinking of my post. When they became popular I wasn't sure I'd wear them either. Now I love them.

I remember in 5th grade we had a girl move in from CA. she wore a pants suit her first day of school and we were all horrified!!! ha!

I started wearing pants in JH....oh the pants suit...but probably better than the big black plaid bell bottoms I had. All my pictures are at my mom's house or I would post one.

You just left out white go go boots in elementary and platforms in JH/HS
