TSMSS - Music that Glorifies God

Today as part of the Giving Thanks Challenge, I am giving thanks for music. Music resonates with my soul unlike any other spoken or written word and moves me, whether in praise, conviction, reflection, or sorrow. I had never heard this beautiful hymn that was written in 1971 in England by Fred Pratt Green. Hymnary.org states, "When in Our Music is the only hymn text in Christendom that explains the reasons for church music while simultaneously offering 'alleluias' to God. The various stanzas deal with our humility in performance (st. 1), the aesthetics of musical worship (s1. 2), and the history of church music (st. 3). The final two stanzas present a biblical model (st. 4) and quote Psalm 150 (st. 5)." Enjoy this beautiful acapella rendition by a high school choir.

WHEN IN OUR MUSIC GOD IS GLORIFIED
Fred Pratt Green

When in our music God is glorified,
And adoration leaves no room for pride,
It is as though the whole creation cried,
"Alleluia!"

How often, making music, we have found
A new dimension in the world of sound,
As worship moved us to a more profound
Alleluia!

So has the church, in liturgy and song,
In faith and love, through centuries of wrong,
Borne witness to the truth in every tongue:
Alleluia!

And did not Jesus sing a psalm that night
When utmost evil strove against the Light?
Then let us sing, for whom He won the fight:
Alleluia!

Let every instrument be tuned for praise!
Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise!
And may God give us faith to sing always,
"Alleluia!"
