My Stubborn Heart

My Stubborn Heart

Kate Donovan is burned out on work, worn down by her dating relationships, and in need of an adventure. When her grandmother asks her to accompany her to Redbud, Pennsylvania, to restore the grand old house she grew up in, Kate jumps at the chance.

Upon her arrival in Redbud, Kate meets Matt Jarreau, the man hired to renovate the house. Kate can't help being attracted to him, drawn by both his good looks and something else she can't quite put her finger on. He's clearly wounded--hiding from people, from God, and from his past. Yet Kate sets her stubborn heart on bringing him out of the dark and back into the light...whether he likes it or not.

When the stilted, uncomfortable interactions between Kate and Matt slowly shift into something more, is God finally answering the longing of her heart? Or will Kate be required to give up more than she ever dreamed?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
During her childhood in California, Becky frequently produced homemade plays starring her sisters, friends, and cousins. These plays almost always featured a heroine, a prince, and a love story with a happy ending. She's been a fan of all things romantic ever since.

Becky and her husband lived overseas in the Caribbean and Australia before settling in Dallas, Texas. It was during her years abroad that Becky's passion for reading turned into a passion for writing.

She published three historical romances with Avon Books, then put her career on hold for several years to care for her kids, then recently returned to writing sheerly for the love of it. She felt led to move to the genre of contemporary Christian romance and couldn't be more thrilled with it.

These days Becky can be found failing but trying to keep up with her housework, sweating at the gym, carting her kids around town, playing tennis, hunched over her computer, eating chocolate, or collapsed on the sofa watching TV with her husband.

MY THOUGHTS
This is a solid debut novel. I enjoyed the plot and the interactions between Kate & Matt as she sets out to befriend him while he helps renovate her grandmother's childhood home. It does have a few bumps along the way, but Becky Wade is definitely an author to watch. My main frustration is the inclusion of of some language that I considered inappropriate and unnecessary. It occurred in only two sentences which were back-to-back but for me, that just made it more unnecessary; my only conclusion was that it was either thrown in for shock value or included due to the author's inexperience, and the editing process should have removed it. While I am not a prude and have defended the use of occasional mildly coarse language in some Christian novels when I felt like it fit the character, this was not one of those instances. In fact, not only was it not appropriate to the character or the scene, but it detracted from it by jarring me and pulling my attention away from the flow of the story. I'm not sure why she felt the need to include it but it definitely took the luster off of my reading experience. I hope future novels show greater discernment, because there is much to like in this story!

Linda, I appreciate your candid review. Although I myself am not a prude, I certainly like to know what to expect in that particular area. Thanks for being honest!

I agree with you, Linda. Some of the "crude" moments kind of were off-putting to say the least. Still, really great read. =)
