The Confessions of X

The Confessions of X
Suzanne M Wolfe
(Thomas Nelson)
ISBN: 978-0718039615
January 2016/304 pages/$15.99

Before he became a father of the Christian Church, Augustine of Hippo loved a woman whose name has been lost to history. This is her story.

She met Augustine in Carthage when she was seventeen. She was the poor daughter of a mosaic-layer; he was a promising student and heir to a fortune. His brilliance and passion intoxicated her, but his social class would be forever beyond her reach. She became his concubine, and by the time he was forced to leave her, she was thirty years old and the mother of his son. And his Confessions show us that he never forgot her. She was the only woman he ever loved.

In a society in which classes rarely mingle on equal terms, and an unwed mother can lose her son to the burgeoning career of her ambitious lover, this anonymous woman was a first-hand witness to Augustine’s anguished spiritual journey from secretive religious cultist to the celebrated Bishop of Hippo.

Giving voice to one of history’s most mysterious women, The Confessions of X tells the story of Augustine of Hippo’s nameless lover, their relationshipbefore his famous conversion, and her life after his rise to fame. A tale of womanhood, faith, and class at the end of antiquity, The Confessions of X is more than historical fiction . . . it is a timeless story of love and loss in the shadow of a theological giant.

MY THOUGHTS

Suzanne M Wolfe gives voice to an anonymous and forgotten figure from history in this compelling novel. While she makes it clear that it is fiction, portions are drawn from research and from the writings of Augustine of Hippo. Wolfe's talent for crafting a story shines through her expressive prose. But while I was drawn into the book by the plight of X and the disparities between classes, I found it to be somewhat sad and depressing as well. While that is just another mark of a well-written book, for the reader to experience the emotions of the situation, my reaction was also based on X's spiritual beliefs. It can also be debated whether this should be classified as Christian fiction vs. religious fiction. Separating that from the overall quality of the novel, I found this to be a thought-provoking and masterfully written piece of historical fiction.

MY THOUGHTS

Maggie Brendan continues her Virtues and Vices of the Old West series with another engaging novel. The pages are peppered with lively action, beginning with the dramatic opening, and plenty of verbal sparring. Vivid scenes and memorable characters bring the Montana frontier to life, making me grateful for the wider array of employment options available to women today. While many things have changed, however, the battles of the heart and soul are timeless, and Brendan expertly weaves a relevant message of faith and love into this heartwarming story. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. It will be your own bitter mishap if you overlook this book so grab your copy of A Sweet Misfortune today!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A Christy Award finalist and best-selling author, MaryLu Tyndall dreamt of tall ships and swashbuckling heroes during her childhood years on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. She holds a degree in Math and worked as a software engineer for fifteen years. Trapped in a land-locked cubicle, she was often seen pounding furiously upon the keyboard during her lunch hour, creating what would become her Legacy of the King’s Pirates series, all the while believing God’s promise to her that. “If you write it, I will get it published”. And He did! Fourteen books later, her loving husband and six children still haven’t gotten used to her historic costumes and nautical speech.

MaryLu describes herself as an introvert, patriot, mother of six, the neighborhood cat-lady, tall ship enthusiast, friend of pirates and mermaids, obsessive compulsive control freak, history lover, hopeless romantic, and a sword wielding princess-warrior of the King of Kings. Her books are filled with adventure and romance and themes that are guaranteed to touch your heart! She continues to pen her romantic tales on the California coast while managing a home, husband, six adult kids, and several stray cats who have decided that her keyboard is the best place to sleep! She believes that without popcorn and chocolate, life would not be worth living, and her sole motivation in life is to bring others closer to God.

MY THOUGHTS

No one writes high seas adventure stories like MaryLu Tyndall, and she pulls out all the stops with this final volume in her Charles Towne Belles series. While each book stands alone, you don't want to miss a single one! Charity's Cross opens with a bang, and the adrenaline-laced action doesn't pause until the final page is turned. Flawed and far too impulsive, Charity nonetheless endeared herself to me, as did Elias, who is the ultimate hero. Tyndall carefully weaves a magnificent faith theme into this story, and the final scenes took my breath away. Don't miss this incredible novel of love and trust.

The Red Door Inn

The Red Door Inn
Prince Edward Island Dreams, Book 1
Liz Johnson
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800724023
February 2016/352 pages/$14.99

Marie Carrington is broke, desperate, and hoping to find sanctuary on Prince Edward Island while decorating a renovated bed-and-breakfast. Seth Sloane moved three thousand miles to help restore his uncle's Victorian B and B--and to forget about the fiancée who broke his heart. He wasn't expecting to have to babysit a woman with a taste for expensive antiques and a bewildering habit of jumping every time he brushes past her.

The only thing Marie and Seth agree on is that getting the Red Door Inn ready to open in just two months will take everything they've got--and they have to find a way to work together. In the process, they may find something infinitely sweeter than they ever imagined on this island of dreams.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Liz Johnson is a full-time marketing specialist for a Nashville-based publisher. She has been a freelance writer and editor for several publications, including CBA Retailers+Resources, Christian Fiction Online magazine, and Storytellers Journal. A member of American Christian Fiction Writers, she is the author of several books, including The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn (an ACFW Carol Award finalist) and A Star in the Night, which was part of the New York Times and ECPA bestselling A Log Cabin Christmas Collection. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

MY THOUGHTS

A book penned by Liz Johnson is a must-read for me. And who can resist a novel and series set on Prince Edward Island, home of the legendary Anne of Green Gables? My eager expectations realized complete fulfillment as I immediately disappeared into the world of Marie, Seth, and Jack as they worked to get The Red Door Inn open for business. With characters who are as much in need of restoration as the cottage they are renovating, The Red Door Inn brings hope to the heart amidst the pages of a thoroughly satisfying story. Johnson's writing is solid and full of delectable moments. I loved the occasional reference to the Green Gables series and its author, such as when a sweet and spicy pastry is likened to "an L. M. Montgomery story in edible form." Clever discourse adds to the sheer delight this book provides, as demonstrated by the artful repartee between the various characters as well as the interior monologues glimpsed only by the reader. While Marie and Seth are the main focus of this tale, Johnson tucks in a few surprises relating to other characters, which only increases the book's sigh-worthiness. Don't miss the chance to "visit" Prince Edward Island and The Red Door Inn, a must-read and one for the keeper shelf!

Her books have been honored with the Daphne du Maurier award, two HOLT Medallions, two National Readers' Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing's Best Award, among others.

MY THOUGHTS

Dani Pettrey garnered many fans and awards with her debut Alaskan Courage series, and I predict this new series will be just as successful. Infused with adrenaline and heart-stopping action, Cold Shot showcases Pettrey at her best: a gripping plot, dynamic characters, and perfectly paced suspense that kept me reading "just one more chapter" until I had finished the book. At times, it isn't certain whether the sparks or bullets fly faster in this race to identify the victim as well as the one responsible for the horrific crime. Between Griffin butting heads with his friends, the tug of romance between him and Finley, and the danger lurking around every corner, Cold Shot is rife with tension and emotion as well as a strong faith message. Mark this as a must-read book and series!

MY THOUGHTS

I have loved Lis Wiehl's previous books and was excited to have the chance to review her latest. While there is much to like about this novel, I was a bit disappointed. I can only suspect the reason is the switch in collaborators, from April Henry to Sebastian Stuart. The writing isn't as tight as her other suspense novels, and the ending is a totally predictable. In fact, some blatant clues and foreshadowing appeared fairly early in the story. Additionally, at least one thread was randomly woven in but not followed through consistently. As far as I'm concerned, it could have been left out completely as one scene stretched the limits of what I expect from a Christian novel. (Although I'm not sure I would really label this a Christian novel aside from the publisher.) I did like the two main characters, Erika and Greg; that and my previous positive experience with Wiehl's books prompted me to finish the book. You may have a different view, however, so check it out for yourself!
