At Bluebonnet Lake

At Bluebonnet Lake
Texas Crossroads, Book 1
Amanda Cabot
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800734343
October 2014/384 pages/$14.99

Her life is set to warp speed. His is slowing to a crawl. But love has its own timing.

Marketing maven Kate Sherwood's world is fast-paced, challenging, and always changing. The last thing she wants to do is grind to a halt at Rainbow's End, a dilapidated resort in the Texas Hill Country. Still, she cannot deny her ailing grandmother's request to visit the place where she and her deceased husband spent one glorious week fifty years ago. There, Kate meets Greg, who appears to be the resort's unassuming handyman. But there's more to Greg than meets the eye--billions more, in fact.

Kate isn't looking for romance, but she can't deny the sparks of attraction that fly every time she and Greg are together. Could there be a future there? Or will Kate's long-sought promotion take her back to the big city?

Amanda Cabot invites you to step into a place away from the pressures of the day. You might be surprised by what you find at Rainbow's End.

Amanda Cabot is the bestselling author of the Texas Dreams series, Christmas Roses, Summer of Promise, and Waiting for Spring. Her books have been finalists for the ACFW Carol Awards and the Booksellers Best. She lives in Wyoming. Find out more at www.amandacabot.com.

MY THOUGHTS

I've enjoyed many of Amanda Cabot's historical romances so I eagerly agreed to review her new contemporary novel, especially since it is set in the Texas Hill Country. Although she lives in Wyoming, Cabot has captured the essence of one of the prettiest areas of the Lone Star State in this story, even though Rainbow's End itself is less than charming. Kate and Greg are believable characters as they are likable as well as flawed. And Kate's spunky grandmother made me grin! Reading this novel brought back memories of the times my husband and I have escaped to the Hill Country for a little respite and reminded me it's been too long. Don't miss this delightful story!

Hunting Down the Hodgepodge

I'm glad to have the opportunity to join in the Hodgepodge today!

1. My hubs spent last weekend pheasant hunting. Are there hunters in your family? If so, what do they hunt? Which of the following have you tasted-pheasant, rabbit, venison, duck, goose? Which of those would you most like to taste, or be most willing to taste?

Vegetarians keep calm and Hodgepodge on.

No hunters in my family, and glad I am of that! Although if I'd grown up with it, I might have a different opinion. (Actually, my brother did hunt for a few years with his in-laws during his first marriage. I was ten when he married and I remembered being completely grossed out about it.) I have tasted venison and hated it. When my girl and I were in Germany I had duck and it was better than I anticipated but way too small to be worth the effort. I'm pretty much a beef and chicken girl. Emphasis on the beef!

2. What high spot have you visited that gave you a wonderful 'bird's eye view' of something below?

The San Jacinto Monument. The University of Texas Tower. The Grand Canyon. Lookout Mountain. And various scenic overlooks in the Rockies and the Smoky Mountaints.

3. Do you have any birds in your home? These could be either real live pets or decorative, as in bird prints, knickknacks, fabric or pottery.

I'm sure there is one somewhere, especially among the mementos my sister brought back from South America, but right now one doesn't come to mind.

4. Tell about a time you 'killed two birds with one stone'?

I'm a wife and mom. That's a regular occurrence!

5. Your favorite song with a bird in it's title?

His Eye is on the Sparrow.

6. What most recently gave you goose bumps?

The way God intertwines our lives. It is uncanny how many times I have met someone and discovered a common friend, a connection from the past, etc. It happened recently with a patient.

7. Halloween is this Friday...any plans? Did you trick or treat as a child? Carve pumpkins? Share your most memorable costume.

I'm working. We trick-or-treated until the guy put cyanide in the pixy sticks. Turned out it was the father but that was the end of safe and innocent Halloween. That was 40 years ago this Halloween.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I hate how much Christmas has intruded into fall. A couple of weeks ago I was in a small store and they had Christmas music playing, loud! Outside on the railing they had both a large pumpkin and a Christmas tree. It made my head hurt.

MY THOUGHTS

I have been loving this series! (Click the titles for my reviews of the first two books, A Sensible Arrangement and A Moment in Time.) Tracie Peterson wraps up the trilogy with a story focusing on Jessica, whose appearances in book two showed her to be a shallow and rather petulant young woman. Peterson expertly develops Jessica into a likable and sympathetic character as she becomes convicted of her self-absorbed lifestyle and endeavors to change. Although this book reads easily as a stand-alone, character appearances and references to previous events add greater depth for those who have read the first two novels. Thoroughly satisfying, A Matter of Heart will capture yours!

Besides, Ewan has resolved he’ll focus on making the brickmaking operation enough of a success that he can become a partner in the business and be able to afford to bring his sisters over from Scotland.

But when Hugh signs a bad business deal, all Ewan’s hard work may come to naught. As his plans begin to crumble, Laura reveals something surprising. She and her mother may have a way to save the brickworks, and in turn Ewan may have another shot at winning Laura’s heart.

Mallory embarks on her dangerous journey only to discover how swiftly and easily promises can be broken. And Mallory can only pray that she will make it out alive.

Inspired by actual events, The Promise is a riveting love story that asks the question: how far will we go for love?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Beth Wiseman is the best-selling author of the Daughters of the Promise series and the Land of Canaan series. Having sold over 1.3 million books, her novels have held spots on multiple Bestseller lists. She was the recipient of the prestigious Carol Award in 2011 and 2013. In 2013 she took home the coveted Holt Medallion. Her first book in the Land of Canaan series–“Seek Me With All Your Heart”–was selected as the 2011 Women of Faith Book of the Year. Beth lives in Texas with her family.

MY THOUGHTS

This is a chilling story, made all the more so by the fact that it is based on an actual event. Beth Wiseman weaves together truth and fiction into a riveting tale that gives a sobering glimpse of evil and manipulation under the guise of religion. At times, reading it was like a train wreck: I suspected what was about to happen but couldn't look away! My one disappointment is that the story focused a bit too much on superficial morality and "niceness" rather than salvation and the truth of the Bible. However, it is definitely an important read, especially for young women searching for love and fulfillment who may be vulnerable to such a situation.

In a daring new novel, Beth Wiseman jumps way outside the box. The Promise will take readers far away from Amish country and small Texas towns to a dangerous place on the other side of the world. Inspired by actual events, this is the book Beth has been working toward for a long time.

Carrie Turansky
(Waterbrook Multnomah)
ISBN: 978-1601424983
October 2014/336 pages/$14.99

What if the title, the estate, the life of security and splendor… what if it isn’t enough?

Strong-willed and beautiful, debutante Katherine Ramsey feels ready to take the London social season by storm, and she must. Her family estate, Highland Hall, has been passed to older male cousin Sir William Ramsey, and her only means of securing her future is to make a strong debut and find a proper husband. With her all-knowing and meddling aunt as a guide, Katherine is certain to attract suitors at the lavish gatherings, sparkling with Great Britain’s elite.

When a shocking family scandal sidelines Katherine, forcing her out of the social spotlight, she keeps a low profile, volunteering with the poor in London’s East End. Here Katherine feels free from her predictable future, and even more so as a friendship with medical student Jonathan Foster deepens and her faith in God grows. But when Katherine is courted anew by a man of wealth and position, dreams of the life she always thought she wanted surface again. Torn between tradition and the stirrings in her heart for a different path, she must decide whom she can trust and love—and if she will choose a life serving others over one where she is served.

She lives in New Jersey with her husband, Scott, and they have five adult children and four grandchildren.

MY THOUGHTS

OH my, this is a wonderful book set in the Edwardian period of 1912. I was completely mesmerized from the opening scenes when debutante Katherine Evangeline Ramsey has her all-important curtsy for royalty and continuing throughout this engaging tale. The societal rules and pressures of the day were staggering, and at times, I felt almost as overwhelmed as Katherine! Carrie Turansky fills this book with wonderful characters--and to be honest, a few who are downright annoying, but even those are well-crafted and developed. Katherine and Joseph set up shop in a corner of my heart and wouldn't leave until long after I finished the final chapter. Grab a copy of this book and one for a gift. You'll be glad you did!

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved Sarah Ladd's debut novel, The Heiress of Winterwood (reviewed here, and I enjoyed this novel as well. Ladd brings the Regency period to life with her sweeping scenes, her portrayal of the social mores of the era, and her appealing characters. Cecily's experiences broke my heart and her strength and compassion for her new employer engendered my admiration. Likewise, Nathaniel's strong commitment to his family and his forbearance regarding his station in life made him a worthy hero and one that I cheered for. Don't miss this engaging story, a must for your fall reading list!

A Love Undone

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Love Undone
WaterBrook Press (September 9, 2014)
by
Cindy Woodsmall

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Cindy Woodsmall is a New York Times and CBA best-selling author who has written fifteen (and counting!) works of fiction and one of nonfiction. She and her dearest Old Order Amish friend, Miriam Flaud, coauthored the nonfiction, Plain Wisdom: An Invitation into an Amish Home and the Hearts of Two Women. Cindy’s been featured on ABC Nightline and the front page of the Wall Street Journal, and has worked with National Geographic on a documentary concerning Amish life. In June of 2013, the Wall Street Journal listed Cindy as one of the top three Amish fiction writers.

She’s won Fiction Book of the Year, Reviewer’s Choice Awards, Inspirational Reader’s Choice Contest, as well as one of Crossings’ Best Books of the Year. She’s been a finalist for the prestigious Christy, Rita, and Carol Awards, Christian Book of the Year, and Christian Retailers Choice Awards.

Cindy and her husband reside near the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains in their now empty nest.

(Since that last line sounds sad and bare, I thought I’d add an “epilogue” of sorts. Our two oldest sons are married and live only a couple of miles from my empty nest, along with my three adorable grandchildren! ♥)

ABOUT THE BOOK

A husband and son abandoned to forge a path alone.

A young woman who sacrificed her dreams.

How will the God of grace and hope help them find their way?

At nineteen years old, Old Order Amish Jolene Keim was on the brink of happily-ever-after when everything changed, stealing the future she expected and burdening her with an unbearable decision. For the next ten years, Jolene throws herself into family life—and then she meets Andy Fisher. The horse trainer and father to a sweet nine year-old challenges her and holds up a mirror to issues Jolene has been unwilling to face.

Andy is cautious about his deepening friendship with Jolene, but he believes she knows the truth about him – that he is a grass widower. As a man whose wife has abandoned him six years past, he is unable to divorce or remarry according to the Amish ways. Andy has wrestled with God concerning his reality, and he had found peace with the solitary future facing him…until he met Jolene.

As Andy and Jolene find themselves confronted by difficult choices, will they trust in God's guidance—or will the allure of their deepening friendship only lead to further temptation?

If you would like to read the first chapter of A Love Undone, go HERE.

MY THOUGHTS

Oh. My. From the moment I read the title and description, I knew this would be an impactful novel but it touched me even beyond my expectations. I read it in a single afternoon because I couldn't bear to put it down. Cindy Woodsmall has crafted a story with two endearing characters in a heartbreaking and impossible situation. Raw and authentic emotion wafts from the pages as Jolene and Andy walk the difficult paths that lie before them. (And while the setting is Amish and the restrictions unique to that culture-a point some readers may scoff at-a similar situation could play out within the Englischer community if our society in general took marriage vows a bit more seriously.) This is a beautiful story of conviction, faith, and God's grace. Don't miss it!
