Like Never Before
Walker Family Series, Book 2
Melissa Tagg
(Bethany House Publishers)
ISBN: 9780764213083
April 2016/352 pages/$35.99

Maple Valley became Amelia Bentley's haven after her heart and her dreams of a family were shattered. But when the newspaper she runs is in danger of closing, she pins all her hopes on a story that just might convince the new owner to keep the paper running.

After his biggest campaign success yet, widowed speechwriter Logan Walker has the chance of a lifetime: a spot on a presidential campaign. But first he has to return to his hometown to sell the newspaper he's suddenly inherited.

But instead of a quick sale, Logan finds himself helping Amelia chase her story. She's scrappy, but wounded. He's dependable, but lost. And working together to break the story on Maple Valley's unsolved mystery is just the start of the sparks that fly in the office and in their hearts.

MY THOUGHTS

I began smiling before I even opened this book because I knew it was going to be utterly charming and delightful, for no other reason than the author's name on the cover. I was right. Melissa Tagg's trademark style fills the pages with her warm and witty prose, engaging & authentic characters who leap from the pages into your heart, and an unexpected historical twist. Nestled amidst the banter and romance, keen spiritual insights add depth and gently steer the reader's heart to the true source of love and security. I was immediately swept into this story, as I am with all of Melissa Tagg's books, and practically read it in one sitting. I am in love with the town of Maple Valley and wish I could hang out at the Walker family home for a while. I'm already looking forward to Book 3. MY REVIEWS OF PREVIOUS TITLES IN THIS SERIES

Three Little Words (FREE! Introductory Novella)
From the Start (Book 1)

Q&A WITH MELISSA TAGG

1. What’s the premise of this story?
This is the story of Amelia Bentley—a woman who has lost her dream of having a family but has created a whole new life for herself as editor of a small-town newspaper. And it’s the story of widowed, single father Logan Walker—a former reporter turned successful speechwriter who finds out he’s inherited said newspaper.

Logan and Amelia end up having cross-purposes—Logan hoping to sell the paper, Amelia desperate to save it. But when they end up chasing an intriguing story together in an attempt to solve Maple Valley’s long-time unsolved mystery, it’s just the start of the sparks that fly in the office and in their hearts.

2. What kind of research did you have to do for Like Never Before?
One thing I didn’t have to research is small-town newspaper life! I was a reporter for a smalltown weekly newspaper for several years after college—and interned at another daily paper throughout college—so I felt confident in portraying that piece of Like Never Before’s storyworld. But I did have to research the ins and outs of political speechwriting, and I did quite a bit of reading on Charles Lindbergh, as there’s a light historical mystery thread related to him in this book.

3. Speaking of that little historical mystery thread, that’s a first for you. What sparked it?
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with this picture book biography of Amelia Earhart. I’m sure I checked it out of my hometown library at least a couple dozen times. As I grew older, that interest spread to Charles Lindbergh, which then intensified when I visited Lindbergh’s childhood home and museum in Little Falls, Minnesota. So those two interests somehow merged in my storyteller mind as I brainstormed this book. It wasn’t entirely planned! But I definitely had fun with it.

4. What message or theme do you hope sticks with readers as they finish Like Never Before?
Prior to writing this story, I walked through a season of feeling creatively dry. My writing dream felt somehow beige; my creative energy lacked its former luster. But then I started writing Like Never Before, started getting to know these two characters who’d also seen their dreams sort of fade into something colorless. And as I wrote, as I dove into Maple Valley and Logan and Amelia’s worlds, my storytelling delight reawakened! I felt my creativity come alive in a new way, as if God was saying, “Look, I’m doing something new here.” It was a return of joy. . . .

And that is what I hope sticks with readers once they’ve turned the last page of Like Never Before. I hope they are refreshed and inspired by the reminder that no matter what we’ve gone through, no matter what we’ve lost, God can make all things new. He can truly give us joy like never before.

5. What’s your favorite scene in this book?
There are some fun and funny scenes in this story and some overtly romantic and wonderfully gooey scenes that I just looooved writing. But probably my favorite scene in the whole book is a much quieter, much softer scene. It takes place on a little bridge right after a rainstorm. My staid and dependable hero, Logan Walker, has just done something he never does, and he’s feeling awful. Enter Amelia. I won’t give away any more than that, other than I just love how she ends up being exactly what Logan needs in those moments . . . from diverting him with charming jokes to emotionally tending his wounds with an unexpected, tender action.

Kissed by a Cowboy

Kissed by a Cowboy
A Four of Hearts Ranch Romance
Debra Clopton
(Thomas Nelson)
ISBN: 978-1401690533
February 2016/320 pages/$12.99

Cassidy was looking for a home and a place to belong . . . not for a cowboy to steal her heart.

Having lived through her parents’ endless string of “matrimonial bliss gone wrong,” Cassidy Starr knows when the odds are not in her favor. Divorced and humiliated, her faith on rocky ground, Cassidy is through with love. She’s been bucked off that horse far too many times. Instead, she returns to Wishing Springs, Texas, and the rundown farm she’s inherited from her great aunt Roxie. She’ll reopen the strawberry farm and a bed & breakfast and follow in her aunt’s footsteps, remaining forever-independent, happy . . . and single.

Rancher Jarrod Monahan’s hands are full running the ranch, looking after his ailing grandfather, and chasing down a group of rustlers on the loose. He’s pushed his longing for a family to the bottom of his list of priorities. Besides, he was in love once but ran scared and lost his shot at happiness. But suddenly, the biggest regret of his life has moved in next door with a wounded heart, determined to become a spinster . . . and that’s a challenge that Jarrod can’t pass up.

Jarrod sets his mind to breaking down the walls around Cassidy’s stubborn heart. How can he show her that a cowboy’s kiss lasts forever? For the good folks of Wishing Springs, falling in love has never been so much fun to witness.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Debra Clopton is a multi-award winning novelist first published in 2005 and has written more than 22 novels. Along with writing, Debra helps her husband teach the youth at their local Cowboy Church. Debra is the author of the acclaimed Mule Hollow Matchmaker Series, and her goal is to shine a light toward God while she entertains readers with her words. Visit her website at www.debraclopton.com.

MY THOUGHTS

Debra Clopton continues her Four of Hearts Ranch series with this third novel. This is my first introduction to this series but it worked well as a stand-alone. While it is an enjoyable read, it does tend to be a bit predictable and stereotypical in terms of the backdrop: a cattle ranch in Texas and mysterious rustlers, a small-town with gossipy women who dissect everyone's relationships, and the typical romantic tension. Cassidy's emotional scars were understandable but she does seem to vascillate between two extremes: becoming overly offended at simple neighborly gestures that Jarrod makes and then practically falling into his arms on other occasions. But there are many heart-warming and humorous moments, as well. if you are looking for a lighthearted, clean romance, free of questionable language and other inappropriate issues, this fits the bill.

Lucetta’s widowed friend, Abigail Hart, is delighted at the opportunity to meddle in Lucetta’s life and promptly whisks her away to her grandson’s estate to hide out.

Bram Haverstein may appear to simply be a somewhat eccentric gentleman of means, but a mysterious career and a secret fascination with a certain actress mean there’s much more to him than society knows.

Lucetta, who has no interest in Abigail’s matchmaking machinations, has the best intentions of remaining cordial but coolly distant to Bram. But when she can’t ignore the strange and mysterious things going on in his house, it’ll take more than good intentions to keep her from trying to discover who Bram is behind the part he plays.

MY THOUGHTS

I have loved Jen Turano's writing since her debut novel a little over three years ago, and she keeps delighting readers with her endearing characters and witty prose. Playing the Part is the third and final book in her latest series about three friends who have been taken under the wing of the widowed Abigail Hart. Although each book stands alone, recurring characters enhance the experience for those who read the entire series. Turano once again blends humor, intrigue, and romance in her unique style, resulting in a charming can't-put-it-down read. I'm now tempted to return to the first book and begin again, reading them straight through without stopping. If you have read any of Jen Turano's previous books, you know this is a must-read. If she's a new author to you, add her to your reading list without delay!

ISBN: 978-0692566565
March 2016/161 pages/$9.00/$5.00 Kindle

Trying to discover where ultimate truth really begins and ends—if it even exists—can be brutal work. Getting support from someone who has struggled with the same issues is invaluable.

In the vein of Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis and Letters from a Skeptic by Greg Boyd, this book is for anyone who has ever gazed up into a star-filled sky and wondered what it all means.

MY THOUGHTS

Will Davis Jr calls this book A Christian book for non-Christians. Written in a simple style as direct and unpretentious as if he were sitting across the coffee shop table from the reader, Davis unpacks many of the questions and topics that non-believers--and to be honest, many believers, as well--have about Jesus and Christianity. This book is perfect for the person seeking the truth about Jesus as well as for someone wanting to know how to address a friend's questions. Even better, give the friend a copy and read it concurrently. Points for Pondering at the end of each chapter make excellent springboards for discussions. Davis includes personal experiences and testimonies from previous skeptics that illustrate the topics addressed. A discussion guide is also available as well as Discussion Guide Video Introductions. MY THOUGHTS

Sandra Orchard had me at the title and never let go! A Fool and His Monet blends mystery with humor and a touch of romance and the result is an absolute delight. Serena's foibles and fears only make her more endearing and relatable. Her interactions with her family, from her mom's fretfulness over her job and marital status to her aunt's overly enthusiastic interest in her cases, are alternately amusing and cringe-inducing. And what's not to love about Tanner, her partner and mentor whose experience and affable personality allow her to rely on him again and again? Or her apartment superintendent, Nate, who is always in the right place at the right time? Underpinning it all is a fascinating mystery, rife with twists and turns that kept me furiously turning pages as Serena and Tanner dashed from one clue to the next. I don't know how I've missed Sandra Orchard's novels before, but she's on my list now, and I'm already eager for the next Serena Jones mystery, Another Day, Another Dali, coming in November. Add this clever book and series to your must-read list!

The Hearts We Mend

The Hearts We Mend
A Banister Falls Novel
Kathryn Springer
(Zondervan)
ISBN: 978-0310339724
March 2015/320 pages/$12.99

Planning and Post-It notes are the epitome of Evie’s life. But when she meets Jack, her life gets more than a little complicated.

Thirteen years ago, Evie’s firefighter husband was killed in the line of duty, leaving her to raise their young son, Cody, alone. Now, Cody is marrying the love of his life, and as he packs up his belongings, the house feels as empty as Evie’s heart. But for all her planning and mad organizational skills, Evie could never have anticipated the dramatic shift her life is about to make.

Tattooed, rough-around-the-edges Jack raises quite a few eyebrows in the tight-knit community of Banister Falls. Where Evie’s life is stream-lined, Jack’s approach to living is moment-by-moment. But as Evie gets drawn into Jack’s world—a world that isn’t as safe or predictable as the one she’s worked so hard to create—he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems outside the walls of the church.

Jack doesn’t make Evie feel comfortable, but he definitely makes her feel something. Something she hasn’t felt since Max passed away—or, maybe ever. Because even though Jack isn’t anything like her late husband, he just might be everything she needs.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kathryn Springer is a USA Today bestselling author. She grew up in northern Wisconsin, where her parents published a weekly newspaper. As a child she spent many hours sitting at her mother’s typewriter, plunking out stories, and credits her parents for instilling in her a love of books – which eventually turned into a desire to tell stories of her own. Kathryn has written nineteen books with close to two million copies sold. She lives with her husband and three children in Marinette, Wisconsin.
Find out more about Kathryn at her website and on Facebook.

MY THOUGHTS

The Hearts We Mend is a compelling and poignant novel that reaches deep into the heart. While it works fine to read as a stand-alone, you'll have a greater appreciation for the relationships between the characters if you have read the first book, The Dandelion Field, which I reviewed here. As with the previous novel, Kathryn Springer weaves credible characters and realistic circumstances together in a tale that is enjoyable as well as, at times, convicting. Evie could be any of us who are content and busy serving within the four walls of the church, a bit oblivious to the struggles outside our circle until our world is turned upside down. Springer does a marvelous job incorporating this theme with a gentle hand, forthright without being sanctimonious or preachy. Aspects of this novel and Evie's journey remind me me of the quote from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe regarding Aslan: "Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good." Don't miss this gripping and inspiring book and series.

ISBN: 978-0764210389
March 2015/384 pages/$15.99

At West Point, Only True Love Should Lead You to Flirtation Walk

Lucinda Pennyworth, the daughter of a con man, is trying her best to leave her father's sordid past behind her. When he dies unexpectedly, she takes the opportunity to move to West Point to live with her aunt, ready to take on a new life and determined to marry a respectable man, a West Point cadet, to impress her relatives.

Seth Westcott, a cadet at the academy, is proud to be at the top of his senior class. But when his mother dies and his sister loses their inheritance to a swindler, Seth wants nothing more than to head west to track down the con man. But the army will only send the cadets at the bottom of the class to the frontier . . . which leaves Seth with some tough choices.

When a woman trying her best to be good meets a man determined to be anything but, can there be hope for love, or will two lonely hearts be condemned to casual flirtation?

Read an excerpt.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Siri Mitchell has written nearly a dozen novels, three of which were named Christy Award finalists. A graduate of the University of Washington with a business degree, she has worked in many levels of government and lived on three continents. She and her family currently reside in the D.C. metro area. Learn more at www.sirimitchell.com.

MY THOUGHTS

From the first time I read a Siri Mitchell novel back in 2008, she has been on my must-read list of authors. Flirtation Walk completely enthralled me, not only with its story but with her portrayal of life at West Point in the 1850's. I loved so many things about this book. The characters, especially Lucinda and Seth, walked straight off the pages and into my heart. Even some of Seth's ne'er-do-well fellow cadets managed to endear themselves to me. The fierce competition for "pecking order" between the cadets and the dilemma that arises when family responsibility conflicts with the ever-present rigor and discipline of military service are aptly depicted. Mitchell beautifully intertwines Lucinda's quest to rid herself of the baggage of her past with Seth's efforts to ensure his future, tucking in nuggets of faith and several surprises that kept me reading "just one more chapter" until I finished the book practically in one sitting. Her notes at the conclusion of the story, relating her research and several actual happenings on which she based portions of this novel, are as fascinating as the tale itself. Put Flirtation Walk at the top of your spring reading list and grab your copy of this must-read today!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WITH SIRI MITCHELL

1. What inspired you to write this story?
While I was researching a different book, I discovered that the cadet who graduated last at West Point used to receive a dollar from all the other cadets in the class. I also learned that holding on to that position often required genius rather than stupidity. To graduate last in the class, grades and comportment had to be low, but not so low that a cadet would be dismissed. You’d have to study just enough to squeak by, but not quite so much that you’d do too well. In fact, you’d have to be quite smart in how you went about it. It made me wonder what it would take for a cadet who was at the top of his class to sink to the bottom and whether it could be done in just one semester. I decided to create a heroine with the opposite trajectory, one who was working her way from the bottom of society to the top.

2. You have some personal experience with military academies.
I do! My husband is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Through the years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of his classmates as well as graduates from the other service academies. I also worked at the Air Force Academy as a civilian.

3. What was the most surprising thing you learned during your research?
This is the third time I’ve featured the military in my stories. The first two times were in contemporary settings. In researching the history of West Point for this book, I was struck by just how little the life of a cadet has changed through the centuries.

4. What is the significance of the title?
Flirtation Walk is a path along the northeastern edge of the West Point military reservation that overlooks the Hudson River. It has a reputation as West Point’s “Lover’s Lane” and is just as popular now as it was in the nineteenth century. It’s strictly off limits to visitors, however; in order to walk that lovely path, you have to be escorted by a cadet.

5. Is a story set at the West Point of the 1850s still relevant today?
I think so. I hope so! At its foundation, this story is about two people who are trying their very best to portray themselves as being different than they truly are. Most of us do the same thing every day. We try to seem better, kinder, less judgmental than we really are. Or we relax the morals we grew up with to try to fit in with those around us. To quote my heroine’s father, we assume that “seeming is the same as being.” But in both cases, the wider community misses out on who we are and the unique talents and abilities we bring to our world.

And It Was Beautiful

And It Was Beautiful:
Celebrating Life in the Midst
of the Long Good-bye

Kara Tippetts
(David C. Cook)
March 2015/256 pages/Harcover/$14.99

“I was here. I saw beauty. I embraced it.” —Kara Tippetts

How do you live out extravagant love in the everyday moments? How do you celebrate grace when your life turns out differently than the one you dreamed?

Kara Tippetts discovered how to find joy in the small moments of life. She learned how to hold tight to hope even while battling intense physical and emotional pain. And she lived out the truth that God can redeem any story.

In her final book, Kara offers gentle reflections on living and dying well. She invites us to cultivate soft hearts even when we face great disappointment. Her ideas for living are hard-won, wrestled with in the crucible of family, illness, and faith. And her constant reminder is that whether we are in the midst of dark days or mundane moments Jesus is always there, life is surprisingly beautiful, and God is forever good.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kara Tippetts was the author of The Hardest Peace and the co-author of Just Show Up. She blogged faithfully at mundanefaithfulness.com. Since her death in March 2015, her husband, Jason, has been parenting their four children and leading the church the couple founded in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Find out more about Kara at http://mundanefaithfulness.com.

MY THOUGHTS

Thousands of people followed the journey of Kara Tippetts (and her family) on her blog, Mundane Faithfulness, as she shared the heartaches, struggles, and even the joys, of living day by day with cancer until she stepped into the arms of Jesus on March 22, 2015. This book contains many of her writings during that time as she sought to bring glory to God and honor Him in the midst of agonizing pain and heartache. Written in her unique, authentic style, Kara shows the reader how to gain an eternal perspective on daily living. While small in size, this tome is a powerful testimony that God is good all the time and no matter the circumstance, it can be well with our soul. An excellent gift.
