March 2017/352 pages/$15.99

The future she dreamed of is gone. But perhaps a better one awaits . . .

All will be well when she's reunited with her fiancé.

But when she discovers he has disappeared--and that he left behind a pregnant wife--Lydia is at a loss about what to do next. The handsome sheriff urges her to trust him, but can she trust anyone in this town where secrets are as prevalent as bluebonnets in spring?

MY THOUGHTS

Amanda Cabaot kicks off her new series with another charming Texas tale. Stories of the women who journeyed to the untamed West to settle it with their men absolutely fascinate me. While this isn't the story of a mail-order bride, the surprise awaiting Lydia at the end of her journey is just as unsettling, considering the limited options that women had in those days! Cabot creates a wonderful story, pairing Lydia's spunk with the formidable Aunt Bertha. Plenty of tense-and humorous!-moments pepper the pages of this thoroughly enjoyable novel. I'm already looking forward to the next one in the series. Don't miss A Stolen Heart!

MY THOUGHTS

History, intrigue, and romance combine in the latest novel by Elizabeth Camden. Camden creates a multi-faceted story that drew me in from the opening pages and kept me reading late into the night. This is not a simple man-meets-woman tale but one that deals with deeper issues of hurt, forgiveness, and second chances. Rich historical detail, authentic characters, and relatable inner struggles enhance the reader's experience. Beautiful parallels can be drawn from the cultivation of pearls, which Camden uses as a secondary story. Rife with emotion and depth, this novel takes the reader To the Farthest Shores to discover truth, hope, and love!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH ELIZABETH CAMDEN

1. Can you describe the plot of To the Farthest Shores in one sentence?
When a reluctant spy falls in love with an army nurse, they can’t imagine the web of intrigue and adventure heading their way.

2. Where did the inspiration for this novel come from?
I adore stories about reunited lost loves. To the Farthest Shores opens with two people who fall desperately in love during the rush of blazing infatuation that often happens in a first love. I think there is a purity to that sort of love that can be hard to recapture once people have their heart broken and they become more guarded in subsequent relationships. I wanted to explore a love story in which the characters strive to recapture that dazzling feeling they once shared but are forced to work through the chaos that tore them apart in the first place.

3. What are the spiritual themes in this novel?
The main theme is that of forgiveness, which comes into play in many contexts. Some of this relates to romantic partners who have hurt each other and must work through serious failings in their relationship. I also touch on the heroine’s struggle to forgive herself for the sins of her youth. There are no easy answers here, as the sins are real and alive. How can a person go beyond merely expressing regret and genuinely receive forgiveness? Can forgiveness be earned? Is it a requirement for a Christian to forgive an offense? True reconciliation rarely happens quickly, and this novel explores the issue while delivering a richly detailed love story.

4. Your novels are known for shedding insight into little-known historic developments. What do you focus on in this novel?
Pearls! Before the 20th century, natural pearls were astronomically expensive and dangerous to harvest. The quest to coax oysters to produce pearls dates back more than a thousand years, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that scientists began closing in on a workable technique. Much of the novel is set along the wild coastline of California, where two dreamers undertake the creation of an oyster farm to cultivate pearls. While researching the novel, I delved into pearl farming and the myriad challenges that come with trying to make an oyster produce a pearl without killing it. I was never a big fan of pearls before I started work on this novel, but now I am fascinated by them.

The metaphor of the pearl runs throughout the novel. Pearls are formed when an irritant causes the oyster pain, and it produces layers of lustrous nacre to protect itself. The pearl is a symbol of that pain. Just as the pearl is beautiful, I believe we become more compassionate people as we endure the pain and challenges that sometimes come our way in life.

5. What is the take-away message you want readers to receive after reading the novel?
While I always aim for a thrilling story with equal parts history, romance, and adventure, I try to infuse the story with ethical challenges that are relevant to today’s reader. None of us are perfect, and our lives will be pockmarked by disappointments, but those challenges have the potential to inspire us to become more compassionate people. They can make us stronger as we learn to weather storms. Even during difficult times, our lives can be shot through with glimpses of joy and inspiration if we look for them.

Many thanks to Bethany House Publishers and Elizabeth Camden for providing the above Q&A!

Home at Last

Home at Last
A Chicory Inn Novel - Book 5
Deborah Raney
(Abingdon Press)
ISBN: 978-1426770487
February 2017/352 pages/$14.99

Why did their differences matter so much?

Link Whitman has settled into the role of bachelor without ever intending to. Now he’s stuck in a dead-end job and, as the next Whitman wedding fast approaches, he is the last one standing. The pressure from his sisters’ efforts to play matchmaker is getting hard to bear as Link pulls extra shifts at work, and helps his parents at the Chicory Inn.

All her life, Shayla Michaels has felt as if she straddled two worlds. Her mother’s white family labeled her African American father with names Shayla didn’t repeat in polite–well, in any company. Her father’s family disapproved as well, though they eventually embraced Shayla as their own. After the death of her mother, and her brother Jerry’s incarceration, life has left Shayla’s father bitter, her niece, Portia, an orphan, and Shayla responsible for them all. She knows God loves them all, but why couldn’t people accept each other for what was on the inside? For their hearts?

Everything changes one icy morning when a child runs into the street and Link nearly hits her with his pickup. Soon he is falling in love with the little girl’s aunt, Shayla, the beautiful woman who runs Coffee’s On, the bakery in Langhorne. Can Shayla and Link overcome society’s view of their differences and find true love? Is there hope of changing the sometimes-ugly world around them into something better for them all?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Deborah Raney’s novels have won numerous awards including the RITA, National Readers’ Choice Award, HOLT Medallion, the Carol Award, and have three times been Christy Award finalists. She and her husband, Ken Raney have traded small-town life in Kansas—the setting of many of Deb’s novels—for life in the city of Wichita. Find out more about Deborah at deborahraney.com.

MY THOUGHTS

Deborah Raney is a must-read author for me and I have really enjoyed this series. Home at Last brings the Chicory Inn novels to a reluctant close for those of us who have laughed and cried with the Whitman family throughout the span of these novels. Raney explores timely and tough issues in this final novel: interracial marriages, racism, and the challenges they bring. Thoughtful and honest in her approach, Raney neither shies away from difficult realities nor throws in extraneous inflammatory incidents as she develops the story and the relationship between Link and Shayla. As always, she drew me into the story, made me care about the characters, and gave me much to ponder. This is not a fluffy read but is an important one that will stay with you long after you turn the final page. I appreciated Raney's comments at the end of the novel, and have reflected on them as well. Add this book to your reading list today.

Conclude Deborah Raney's Chicory Inn novels with the final book, Home at Last, a story of acceptance, trying to overcome differences, and love. Everything changes for bachelor Link Whitman one icy morning when a child runs into the street and he nearly hits her with his pickup—and then the girl's aunt Shayla enters Link's life. Can Shayla and Link overcome society’s view of their differences and find true love? Is there hope of changing the sometimes-ugly world around them into something better for them all?

MY THOUGHTS

What a charming collection of novellas! Stories of someone finding a message in a bottle have always fascinated me, and the concept of one traced through centuriess makes a delightful read. From the opening set in a ninth-century monastery to the final modern-day resolution, these stories tie together by an ancient bronze bottle etched with a single word, Spero, and pointing the characters--and the reader--to the hope contained on the message within. I had not previously read any of the authors except Jocelyn Green, whose writing I highly esteem and who is the reason I eagerly read this book, and I enjoyed each of their stories and "meeting" new-to-me authors. Though varied in setting and time period, the overarching theme, as well as writing styles that intertwined seamlessly, smoothed the transition from one story to the next. While the end of each novella is a natural place to set aside the book for another day, it was difficult not to forge ahead into the next one! As spring weather warms, this is the perfect beach read. You might even find your own Message in a Bottle!

But when real estate agent Geraldine Harper enters the house on a sunny October day, she's not alone. Minutes later, there is a body at the bottom of the steep steps leading to the tower room.

Deputy sheriff Michael Keane is called in. At first blush, it looks like the death was a tragic accident, but clues point to foul play. And when a second body is discovered, the race is on to find the culprit . . . before someone else dies.

If you like your small-town America sweet and quirky--with a dash of sinister--you'll love this latest whodunit from deft storyteller A. H. Gabhart.

MY THOUGHTS

Oh, my! What a fun and unique mystery! A. H. Gabart is such a versatile author, and this third Hidden Springs Mystery is thoroughly enjoyable, in spite of the serious nature of the crime. I immediately adored Maggie, who was surreptitiously enjoying the attic of the ginormous Chandler mansion when things go horribly awry. Gabhart manages to intertwine humor and suspense as well as some of the town's eccentric characters in this delightful tale. A great spring break or beach read, Murder is No Accident is a must for your TBR pile! Grab your copy today.

My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas: Priscilla's Reveille

My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas:
Priscilla's Reveille

Erica Vetsch
(Barbour Publishing)
ISBN: 978-1634099301
March 2017/258 pages/$12.99

Journey now to Fort Bliss in West Texas of 1874, where...
A Battle Is About to be Waged Between Two Hearts.

Fashion artist Priscilla Hutchens has a grudge against the army that has ruined her family and taken the people she holds most dear. When her twin niece and nephew are left orphaned at Fort Bliss, Texas, she swoops down on Fort Bliss to gain custody of them immediately.

There is just one thing standing in the way—Post surgeon Major Elliot Ryder, who is also the twins uncle, also claims the children and thinks he knows what is best for them.

Priscilla and Elliot will cross swords, but each will have to lay down arms if they are to find a lasting peace on which to form the family both are longing for. Who will win the battle? Or will a truce be called for the sake of love and family?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Erica Vetsch is a transplanted Kansan now residing in Minnesota. She loves books and history, and is blessed to be able to combine the two by writing historical romances. Whenever she’s not following flights of fancy in her fictional world, she’s the company bookkeeper for the family lumber business, mother of two, an avid museum patron, and wife to a man who is her total opposite and soul mate. Erica loves to hear from readers. You can sign up for her quarterly newsletter at www.ericavetsch.com

MY THOUGHTS

Although I was not familiar with this author, the book's description, along with the fact that it is set in Texas, enticed me to read this enjoyable novel. While much is predictable, as many romances are, Erica Vetsch manages to add a few twists along the way. The interactions between Priscilla and Elliot are amusing as they clash and spar and try so hard to ignore the obvious solution to the question of who should raise their mutual niece and nephew. Vetsch creates a wonderful cast of secondary characters (although some are wonderfully irritating!) that add to the story and provide food for thought for Priscilla as well as the reader. I will be watching for more from this author. Take a journey to Fort Bliss, Texas today!

When Tides Turn

When Tides Turn
Waves of Freedom, Book 3
Sarah Sundin
(Revell)
ISBN: 9780800723446
March 2017/400 pages/$15.99

In a time of war, sometimes battles take place in the heart.

Tess Beaumont is tired of being thought of as just a pretty face. Eager to do her part for the war effort, she joins the Navy's newly established WAVES program for women. Perhaps there she can convince people that there is more to her than meets the eye.

Lt. Dan Avery has been using his skills in the fight against German U-boats and hoping to make admiral. The last thing he wants to see on his radar is a girl like Tess. Convinced that romance will interfere with his goals, Dan is determined to stay the course, no matter how intriguing a distraction Tess is.

But love, like war, is unpredictable. When Dan is shipped out at the peak of the Battle of the Atlantic, he finds himself torn between his lifelong career goals and his desire to help the beguiling Tess root out a possible spy on shore. Could this fun-loving glamour girl really be the one?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sarah Sundin is the author of Through Waters Deep and Anchor in the Storm, as well as the Wings of the Nightingale and the Wings of Glory series. A graduate of UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy, she works on-call as a hospital pharmacist. During WWII, her grandfather served as a pharmacist's mate (medic) in the Navy, and her great-uncle flew with the US Eighth Air Force. Sarah lives in California. Visit www.sarahsun for more information.

MY THOUGHTS

Sarah Sundin brings her Waves of Freedom series to a satisfying conclusion with When Tides Turn. I have really enjoyed this series which has focused on the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) who served in World War 2. Tess and Dan were secondary characters in the earlier books, and now are the main focus of this final novel. Each of Sundin's books can easily be read as standalones, although reading the whole series provides a richer experience. Sundin's careful research and gift for story enable her to produce authentic settings and characters, bringing this important era to life. When Tides Turn is simultaneously a completely enjoyable novel and a reminder of the debt we owe to the Greatest Generation who served our country during this era.

The Elusive Miss Ellison

The Elusive Miss Ellison
Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace, Book 1
Carolyn Miller
(Kregel Publications)
ISBN: 978-0825444500
February 2017/304 pages/$14.99

Handsome appearance counts for naught unless matched by good character and actions.

That’s the firm opinion of not-so-meek minister’s daughter Lavinia Ellison. So even though all the other villagers of St. Hampton Heath are swooning over the newly returned seventh Earl of Hawkesbury, she is not impressed. If a man won’t take his responsibilities seriously and help those who are supposed to be able to depend on him, he deserves no respect from her. In Lavinia’s pretty, gray eyes, Nicholas Stamford is just as arrogant and reckless as his brother–who stole the most important person in Livvie’s world.

Nicholas is weighed down by his own guilt and responsibility, by the pain his careless brother caused, and by the legacy of war he’s just left. This quick visit home to St. Hampton Heath will be just long enough to ease a small part of that burden. Asking him to bother with the lives of the villagers when there’s already a bailiff on the job is simply too much to expect.

That is, until the hoydenish, intelligent, and very opinionated Miss Ellison challenges him to see past his pain and pride. With her angelic voice in his head, he may even be beginning to care. But his isn’t the only heart that needs to change.

These two lonely hearts may each have something the other needs. But with society’s opposition, ancestral obligations, and a shocking family secret, there may be too many obstacles in their way.

Fans of Georgette Heyer, Lori Wick, and Julie Klassen will enjoy the spirited exchanges between the bluestocking minister’s daughter and the bruised war hero as they move past pride and presumption to a humbled appreciation of God’s grace and the true strength of love.

MY THOUGHTS

I am delighted to discover a promising new author of Regency romance novels. Carolyn Miller's debut novel absolutely charmed me, beginning with its beautiful cover and continuing throughout every chapter. Wonderful characters inhabit the little village of St. Hampton Heath, not the least of which is the tile character, Lavinia Ellison. Saucy and sharp as a whip, she refuses to turn into a simpering eyelash-batting famale just because a handsome and titled gentleman such as Nicholas Stamford, seventh Earl of Hawesbury, shows up.. Miller fills the story with adorably awkward moments, lively repartee, and romantic tension, all of which make this a thoroughly satisfying read. I'll be keeping an eye out for more from this author. Don't miss this enchanting story.
