March 2018/304 pages/$15.99

Some families are filled with so much love they can’t help but drive each other crazy

Shay Henke has mixed feelings about going to her family’s next reunion. On the one hand, she’ll get to see everyone in her mama's family—folks she loves unconditionally. On the other hand, she knows there’ll be more drama than you can shake a stick at.

The days leading up to the event bring one surprise after another. First Shay must deal with her sister-in-law’s deep, dark secret. Then she has to contend with the childish ways of her business-mogul twin cousins. And when her high school crush wants to be her date to the reunion . . . well, it may have been a dream come true for Shay’s teen self, but the woman she’s become doesn’t know what to make of this.

Shay’s contentment is challenged, and she’s determined to shake things up a bit. But will she find the excitement she’s looking for, or will Shay realize she prefers her quiet and predictable life? One thing is certain: Life in the Bucklin family is never boring.

Her parents were both from the Deep South, so she enjoys featuring characters with southern drawls, plenty of down-home cooking, and folks with quirky mannerisms.

She and her husband currently live in the Charleston, South Carolina, area. Visit her website for more information.

MY THOUGHTS

Pull up a porch swing and grab yourself some sweet tea--Debby Mayne has served up a heaping helping of Southern in her latest release. I do believe I have met a few of the folks in High Cotton--or maybe I should call them characters! Anyone who has been part of a large Southern family or attended a family reunion may recognize a distant cousin or two. High Cotton is high on drama and high on love, as well. Mayne depicts a family with plenty of ups and downs who aren't shy about pointing out each other's flaws, but they will be the first one to defend those samed loved ones to an outsider! Plenty of laughter and a sprinkling of tears pepper these pages, along with reminders of the many ways God uses our (often unique!) family members to grow us and show us His love. Sit a spell and enjoy High Cotton today.

Winning Miss Winthrop

Winning Miss Winthrop
Regency Brides: The Promise of Hope (Book 1)
Carolyn Miller
(Kregel Publications)
ISBN: 978-0825445330
March 2017/320 pages/$15.99

Catherine Winthrop has cried out to God too many times to count. Years ago, the man who stole her heart rejected her--and she's never recovered. Now tragedy has brought him back into her life. This time it isn't her heart he's taking, it's her home and her family's good name--and she has no one to share her grief.

Jonathan Carlew's life may look enviable from the outside--wealthy, handsome, landed--but the mystery surrounding his birth has shadowed his entire life. Now as he ascends to the barony, fresh challenges await, including a scheming mama who wants him to embrace power, even at the cost of losing love. How can he remain the kind, honorable man he strives to be and still meet the demands of his new society responsibilities?

These two broken hearts must decide whether their painful past and bitter present will be all they can share, or if forgiveness can provide a path to freedom for the future.

Set in the sumptuous salons of Bath, Regency England's royal breeding ground for gossip, Winning Miss Winthrop is the first volume in Carolyn Miller's new series. Fans of the wholesome and richly drawn first series won't want to miss this new set of characters.

MY THOUGHTS

Carolyn Miller immediately became a must-read author for me when I read her debut novel last year, and I am delighted to discover she is embarking on another Regency Brides series. As in her previous novels, Miller creates a sigh-worthy romance amidst the backdrop of England in the early nineteenth century. Vividly drawn characters inhabit authentic scenes, making the pages come alive with intrigue, power, and love. I loved this story and couldn't put it down. I can't fathom what it would be like to be a woman in Catherine's position, to be stripped of all that is familiar and watch someone else inhabit my home while I lived mere yards away, subject to their generosity, and I ached for all that Catherine experienced. I also can't imagine dealing with the social mores required during that time period, and Miller brilliantly depicts the clever. albeit at times thinly veiled, rhetoric accompanying afternoon visits and formal balls and dinners. I am already eager for Miss Serena's Secret to be revealed in June! Add Winning Miss Winthrop to your spring reading list - you don't want to miss any of these engaging novels!

A Borrowed Dream

Amanda Cabot
Revell
ISBN: 978-0800727574
March 2018/352 pages/$15.99

There is no such thing as an impossible dream . . .

Catherine Whitfield is sure that she will never again be able to trust anyone in the medical profession after the local doctor's treatments killed her mother. Despite her loneliness and her broken heart, she carries bravely on as Cimarron Creek's dutiful schoolteacher, resigned to a life where dreams rarely come true.

Austin Goddard is a newcomer to Cimarron Creek. Posing as a rancher, he fled to Texas to protect his daughter from a dangerous criminal. He's managed to keep his past as a surgeon a secret. But when Catherine Whitfield captures his heart, he wonders how long he will be able to keep up the charade.

With a deft hand, Amanda Cabot teases out the strands of love, deception, and redemption in this charming tale of dreams deferred and hopes becoming reality.

MY THOUGHTS

Nothing beats a historical romance set in Texas--except maybe one with a medical twist! While I enjoyed Amanda Cabot's series opener, A Stolen Heart, this new release is her best yet, and I couldn't put it down. Easily read as a standalone, A Borrowed Dream focuses on Catherine and Austin's story, yet their circle of friends-not to mention the town at large-includes individuals from the previous novel, providing a richer experience for readers of both works. Cabot provides a fascinating glimpse of the extremes of medicine in the waning nineteenth century, from leeches and purgatives to the cutting edge (no pun intended!) of plastic surgery within the framework of this multi-faceted tale. Heart-wrenching incidents intersperse with sigh-worthy encounters as evil lurks. A roller-coaster of emotions enveloped me as I read, and the climax took my breath away. Don't miss A Borrowed Dream, a must for your spring reading list!

London Beginnings, Book 2

London, 1881

He Never Expected to See Her Again. Then She Appeared with a Most Unexpected Request. . . .

Strong-minded and independent, Julia Bernay has come to London to study medicine and become a doctor--a profession that has only just opened up to women. When she witnesses a serious accident, her quick action saves the life of an ambitious young barrister named Michael Stephenson. It's only later that she learns he could be instrumental in destroying her dreams for the future.

Coming from a family that long ago lost its status, Michael Stephenson has achieved what many would have thought impossible. Hard work and an aptitude for the law have enabled him to regain the path to wealth and recognition. His latest case puts him in the middle of a debate over the future of a women's medical school. He's supposed to remain objective, but when the beguiling and determined Julia reappears with an unexpected entreaty, he begins to question what he's made most important in his life. But Julia may be hiding her own motivations. As the two are tangled into spending more time together, will their own goals be too much to overcome?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Her follow-up novel, A Lady Most Lovely, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and the Maggie Award for Excellence from Georgia Romance Writers. Jennifer earned a BA in English from McGill University in Montreal, where she became fluent in French and developed an abiding passion for winter sports. MY THOUGHTS

What a fabulous story! Julia is full of spunk and courage, and I admired her determination and single-minded purpose, not to mention her absolute gumption! Michael was equally likable, and I appreciated his willingness, albeit reluctant, to look beyond the established and expected protocols to the true issue. Delamere creates a marvelous tale that pits Julia and Michael on opposing sides of a court case in addition to their unequal social station, providing all manner of opportunity for conflict. Richly crafted scenes bring London's Victorian era to life, while the cultured discourse – as well as its clever nuances! – reminds the reader of the value and care placed in those days upon maintaining appropriate distance between men and women. The unexpected ending surprised and delighted me, and I hated to turn the final page. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and will be looking for more from this gifted author.

Q&A WITH JENNIFER DELAMERE

1. In The Heart’s Appeal, Julia Bernay comes to London in order to attend medical school. What made you choose this profession for her?

Medicine seemed a natural fit for Julia, due to her love of learning and her desire to help people. In 1881, when this book takes place, England had only recently passed laws allowing women to certify as physicians. Julia is a strong-minded and independent person and a natural groundbreaker, which describes all of the early female doctors. They faced a lot of initial opposition from many people in the established medical profession, and public opinion wasn’t always with them, either. But they persevered.

Julia’s choice of career also fits with her background of having been raised in George Müller’s orphanage in Bristol, England. When girls left Müller’s orphanage, most went into service (cooks, maids, etc.). However, some became nurses, as did Julia. It was easy to imagine that Julia would jump at the opportunity to become a physician when that field finally opened up to women. Her Christian upbringing in Müller’s orphanage has
made her a fervent believer. She wants to become a licensed physician so that she can be a medical missionary to foreign countries. But she soon learns there are many people in London who also need the physical and spiritual help that she can provide.

2. Although the main characters in your books are fictional, you often include real people in your books. Is this the case with The Heart’s Appeal?

Yes! Julia’s mentor at the medical school is Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, who in 1865 became the first woman to qualify as a physician in Britain. In 1874, she cofounded the London School of Medicine for Women and was active in its administration as well as teaching. Her husband, James G.S. Anderson (Jamie), was the joint-owner of a successful shipping line. They were a perfect match for many reasons, not the least of which was because he fervently supported his wife’s choice of a career. Jamie Anderson offers advice and help to Michael Stephenson, the book’s hero, at a critical time.

Julia also has an inspiring encounter with Dr. Anderson’s sister, Millicent Fawcett. Today, Millicent is most remembered for her role in the women’s suffrage movement. Both sisters were quite extraordinary, and I enjoyed being able to include them in this book.

3. The Heart’s Appeal includes scenes on the London Underground. Do you think this will surprise the reader?

I’m sure the image most people have of transportation in Victorian London is that of hansom cabs—two-wheeled carriages with the driver’s seat high in the back. Certainly there were countless numbers of those. But the first line of what became known as the London Underground was opened in 1863, so it was well-established by 1881 when Julia gets there. At that time, the trains were powered by big, smoky steam engines. You might say that London’s fog above ground was matched by the smoke-filled tunnels below. The trains were not electrified until the early twentieth century.

Many thanks to Jennifer Delamere and Bethany House Publishers for providing the above Q&A.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books...to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary.

Being educated at St. John’s College (the Great Books School) taught Roseanna to ask questions, to value conversation, and to never accept the simple answer without exploring it for herself. She and her family make their home in the mountains of West Virginia where she and her husband both grew up. Roseanna is a member of ACFW, a frequent speaker at writers events and small groups of readers, and an unabashed email addict. Learn more at her website, http://www.roseannamwhite.com/

MY THOUGHTS

I missed this novel the first time around and am so glad it's being re-released. This time I knew what a treat Roseanna M. White's novels are, and I couldn't put it down. Set in the early days following the American Revolution, A Heart's Revolution contains fascinating details about the aftermath and the lingering bitterness against those who had remained loyal to the Crown. The compelling historical setting provides a magnificent backdrop for the battle for love and honor. White weaves a masterful story, eliciting many smiles as quiet, compliant Lark blooms into a vivacious and indomitable young woman. White makes Emerson work harder to gain the reader's sympathies and affection (not to mention Lark's!), and it isn't certain if he will be successful on either account. Completely delightful from the opening paragraphs to the final utterly satisfying sentence, A Heart's Revolution is one of those rare books I hated to finish and wish it were part of a series. Don't miss this charming novel!

MY THOUGHTS

Carrie Turansky's engaging characters beckoned me to the Edwardian era as I journeyed within the pages of this book to early twentieth-century England. My knowledge of the inaugural days of flight was limited to school lessons about Orville & Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk, so I was fascinated to read about the race for the skies in Europe. Turansky ably portrays both the thrills and dangers experienced by James and others who seek to be the first to fly across the English channel, and she parallels this quest alongside Isabella's own attempted "flight" from the expectations of her upbringing. It's hard to imagine, in our current day, how difficult-and even scandalous-the idea seemed that a young lady would desire a profession rather than the expected and socially acceptable marriage, and Isabella's challenges and victories add to the appeal of this novel. A bit of intrigue (and of course, romance!) adds excitement and faith keeps the story well-grounded. Don't miss Across the Blue!
