Will the dam hold?

Julie Wallace has always wanted to write. Trying to escape the Great Depression, Julie’s father buys the Alderton Sentinel, a small-town newspaper in flood-prone Alderton, Pennsylvania, and moves his family there. As flash floods ominously increase, Julie’s investigative reporting uncovers secrets that could endanger the entire community.

Julie, the newspaper, and her family are thrown into a perilous standoff with the owners of the steel mills as they investigate the conditions of the immigrant laborers. As the Alderton Sentinel and Julie take on a more aggressive role to reform these conditions, seething tensions come to a head.

When a devastating tragedy follows a shocking revelation, Julie’s courage and strength are tested. Will truth and justice win, or will Julie lose everything she holds dear?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Catherine Marshall (1914-1983), The New York Times best-selling author of 30 books, is best known for her novel Christy. Based on the life of her mother, Christy captured the hearts of millions and became a popular CBS television series. Around the kitchen table at Evergreen Farm, as her mother reminisced, Catherine probed for details and insights into the rugged lives of these Appalachian highlanders. Catherine shared the story of her husband, Dr. Peter Marshall, Chaplain of the United States Senate, in A Man Called Peter. A decade after Dr. Marshall’s untimely death, Catherine married Leonard LeSourd, Executive Editor of Guideposts, forging a dynamic writer-editor partnership. A beloved inspirational writer and speaker, Catherine’s enduring career spanned four decades and reached over 30 million readers.

MY THOUGHTS

I love that Gilead Publishing is reissuing Catherine Marshall's classic, beloved novels, Christy and Julie. While Christy is based on the life of her mother, Catherine Marshall found inspiration for Julie some of her own memories of life as an eighteen-year-old in Keyser, West Virginia during the Great Depression. This multi-layered tale of the Wallace family and their relocation to Alderton provides an authentic and touching portrait of life in a small town whose main employer is a steel mill owned by a man who rules the company - and the town - with intimidation and a "my way or the highway-or else" attitude. As someone who did not grow up in a pro-union environment, I learned a bit about the circumstances that gave birth to the movement for employee rights and was aghast at the attitudes displayed by the owners toward the working men and women who toiled with so little recompense. Julie and her family endeared themselves to me from the opening pages as they attempted to put behind them the life and heartaches they had experienced prior to their move and as Julie's father struggled with his personal demons. I particularly enjoyed Julie's work as a proofreader for the fledgling newspaper, which reminded me of my own days as a copy editor of my high school newspaper. I know I read this book when it was first released back in 1984, but I read it with new appreciation now that I've gained a few decades of life experience. While I probably identified more with Julie on my first read in my twenties, the adversities experienced by her parents stirred me most this time around. So many nuggets of truth can be gleaned from these pages. Don't miss this classic novel in its newly republished form!

Pelican Point

Pelican Point
A Hope Harbor Novel
Irene Hannon
(Revell)
ISBN: 9780800728809
April 2018/368 pages/$15.99

In the midst of life's storms, unexpected love is a beacon of hope.

A crumbling lighthouse is not part of the inheritance Army doctor Ben Garrison expects to claim when he journeys to Hope Harbor. Fresh out of the service, he wants only to unload the tower of bricks, decompress from years of treating battlefield trauma, and prepare to launch his civilian career.

Hope Harbor Herald editor Marci Weber has other ideas. She may not be a Hope Harbor native, but the small Oregon seaside town has become home--and she's determined to save the Pelican Point landmark.

Sparks fly as the two go head-to-head over the fate of the lighthouse. But when they start to cooperate, a different kind of fire ignites. Can Hope Harbor heal the hearts of these two romance-wary souls?

Come home to Hope Harbor...
where hearts heal--and love blooms

MY THOUGHTS

Irene Hannon is doubly gifted: she writes suspense novels that make me gasp and contemporary romances that make me sigh. Pelican Point is another delightful addition to her Hope Harbor series. While it is easily read as a standalone, I loved reuniting with characters from the previous novels, such as Charley, who dispenses wisdom along with his ever-popular fish tacos. Once again, Hannon creates engaging and believable characters in Marci and Ben, each of whom tug at my heart as they face the obstacles that stand between them and their opposing goals. Equally compelling and authentic, Greg and Rachel added depth to the story, and I cheered for them to find their way. Oh, and what's not to love about the unique couple Floyd and Gladys, who only Charley seems to fully understand? (I've always thought Charley is what the Bible refers to as an "angel unaware.") While this story definitely qualifies as a romance, Hannon deftly tucks in a flicker of suspense, adding a layer of tension as the climax nears. You don't want to miss this book or series. Visit Hope Harbor and Pelican Point this spring. Tell Charley I sent you!

MY THOUGHTS

What a great novel! Forbidden love across the classes always tugs at the heart, but when it begins on an equal footing and then one of the individual's station changes, it becomes even more heart-wrenching. Susan Anne Mason creates a compelling story with endearing characters who face timeless challenges. While our society no longer follows the iron-clad rules of aristocracy, the struggle for parental approval and unconditional acceptance will resonate with many readers. I was captivated by Hannah and Nolan's situation and couldn't put this book down until the final page was turned. A Most Noble Heir is a most excellent choice for your spring reading list!

MY THOUGHTS

Kathleen Y'Barbo always pens a compelling story, and she exceeds all expectations with The Pirate Bride. Vivid imagery and distinctive characters sweep me into this adventure-filled tale, and I practically felt the salt-spray and the pitch of the ship as it crested the waves. A fine line distinguishes a privateer from a pirate, and though I wouldn't want to find myself on a ship commanded by either, it does provide a fascinating story! A couple of relatively minor issues keep me from giving this book the highest rating. As a stickler for details, I was a bit frustrated that the blurb didn't quite match the story--Maribel was almost thirteen, not eleven, as the story opens. And the latter part of the book, when Jean-Luc and Maribel meet again, seems a bit rushed, considering the difference in their ages and the length of time since they had seen each other. Overall, however, this is a captivating read with important faith messages regarding forgiveness and revenge. Grab your copy today.
