After years of hiding her true nature, Miss Temperance Flowerdew is finally enjoying freedom outside of the shadow of her relations, so the last thing she expected on her way to work was to be grabbed off the street by a stranger and put on a train bound for Chicago.

When Mr. Gilbert Cavendish is called upon to rescue a missing woman, he follows the trail to Chicago only to discover that the woman is his good friend, Temperance. Before they can discover who was behind her abduction, they're spotted alone together by a New York society matron, putting their reputations at risk.

Even though Gilbert is willing to propose marriage, Temperance is determined not to lose her newfound independence. But when the misunderstanding in Chicago escalates into a threat on her life, accepting Gilbert's help in solving the mystery may lead to more than she ever could have dreamed.

MY THOUGHTS

Jen Turano closes out her delightful series with another thoroughly charming novel. Turano's creative genius sets her Apart from the Crowd as she once again swirls together peril and propriety with a dash of whimsy, resulting in an entertaining tale that alternately made me cringe and laugh out loud. Caught by Surprise is more than simply a superficial and frivolous read, however. Subtle and organic threads of love and honor add depth and balance. What fun it was following Temperance Flowerdew's adventures and watching her lifelong friendship with Gilbert blossom. Perfectly enjoyable as a standalone, this novel will be that much more satisfying for those who have read the earlier books in the series as they reconnect with Temperance's friends Miss Gertrude Cadwalader and Miss Permilia Griswold, along with other unique and enchanting characters. Don't miss this extraordinary story, and pick up its predecessors as well.

The Chicken Who Loved Books

The Chicken Who Loved Books
Angela Hunt
Illustrated by
Marrieta Gal
(Hunt Haven Press)
ASIN: B07CQ5P82K
July 2018/34 pages/$6.99

Little Red loves it when Henry comes home and reads books to the chicken in the coop. But when Henry begins to bring a video game instead of books, Little Read has to figure out a way to tell him that while video games are fun, books are better. For ages 3-8. From the author of the beloved The Tale of Three Trees.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Christy-Award winner Angela Hunt writes for readers who expect the unexpected in novels. With nearly five million copies of her books sold worldwide, she is the best-selling author of more than 140 works ranging from picture books (including The Tale of Three Trees) to non-fiction books, to novels. Her books have won the coveted Christy Award, several Angel Awards from Excellence in Media, and the Gold and Silver Medallions from Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year Award. In 2007, her novel The Note was featured as a Christmas movie on the Hallmark channel. Romantic Times Book Club presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.

Also in 2006, Angela completed her Master of Biblical Studies in Theology degree. She completed her doctorate in biblical studies in 2008 and her Th.D. in 2015. When she’s not home reading or writing, Angie often travels to teach writing workshops at schools and writers’ conferences.

Now that her two children are grown, Angie and her husband live in Florida with Very Big Dogs (a direct result of watching Turner and Hooch and Sandlot too many times). This affinity for mastiffs has not been without its rewards–one of their dogs was featured on Live with Regis and Kelly as the second-largest canine in America. Their dog received this dubious honor after an all-expenses-paid trip to Manhattan for the dog and the Hunts, complete with VIP air travel and a stretch limo in which they toured New York City. Afterward, the dog gave out pawtographs at the airport.

Angela admits to being fascinated by animals, medicine, psychology, unexplained phenomena, and “just about everything” except sports. Books, she says, have always shaped her life— in the fifth grade she learned how to flirt from reading Gone with the Wind. You can read about her latest adventure, raising chickens, on her blog. Learn more about Angela on her website and Facebook.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved reading to my kids when they were little, and I know this one would have been one of their favorites. Angela Hunt has created a wonderful tale that will delight both parents and children while reinforcing the importance of reading. Engaging illustrations bring the story to life and provide opportunities for conversation and teaching on each page. I can hear children saying, "Read it again!" as the final page is turned. Don't miss this charming picture book.

July 2018/336 pages/$15.99

One young woman must stand up for freedom--and perhaps find her own in the process.

Orphaned in the cholera epidemic of 1833, Adria Starr was cared for by a slave named Louis, a man who passed up the opportunity to escape his bondage and instead tended to the sick and buried the dead. A man who, twelve years later, is being sold by his owners despite his heroic actions.

Now nineteen, Adria has never forgotten what Louis did for her. She's determined to find a way to buy Louis's freedom. But in 1840s Kentucky, she'll need all of the courage and strength she possesses--and more.

Partly inspired by a true story, this latest novel from Gabhart depicts the harrowing conditions of slavery in the antebellum South as well as the dangers faced by those who helped slaves escape. Exquisitely voiced characters add a depth and richness of hope that incorporates themes of faith and justice.” ~Library Journal Review

The top of Ann H. Gabhart's website says Come home to story, and indeed, that's exactly what happens inside the pages of this exquisitely written and touching novel. When Katherine "Kit" FitzGilbert turned her back on London society more than a decade ago, she determined never to set foot in a ballroom again. But when business takes her to London and she's forced to run for her life, she stumbles upon not only a glamorous ballroom but also Graham, Lord Wharton. What should have been a chance encounter becomes much more as Graham embarks on a search for his friend's missing sister and is convinced Kit knows more about the girl than she's telling.

After meeting Graham, Kit finds herself wishing things could have been different for the first time in her life, but what she wants can't matter. Long ago, she dedicated herself to helping women escape the same scorn that drove her from London and to raising the innocent children caught in the crossfire. But as much as she desperately wishes to tell Graham everything, the risk of revealing the truth may come at too high a price for those she loves.

MY THOUGHTS

As a fan of Kristi Hunter's novels, I knew this would be an exceptional story, but she exceeded even my high expectations. Hunter portrays a difficult and heartrending reality of life in the early nineteenth century (and many years since) in this first book of her Haven Manor series, yet perfectly balances poignant moments with times of whimsy and joy. From the opening humorous moments involving the arboreal decor of a grand ball to the final pages, A Defense of Honor engaged, inspired, and delighted me. I immediately fell in love with the children, of course, and Kit and Graham, along with Daphne and the mysterious Jess, endeared themselves to me as well. Hunter deftly threads subtle yet important messages of forgiveness, justice, and honor throughout this compelling story. I am already eager for more of Daphne's story in Book 2, coming in February. Don't miss A Defense of Honor!

ASIN: ASIN: B079V1KN1K
March 2018/129 pages/$0.00

Margaretta Fortescue desperately needs to disappear from London society, and her only hope is to follow the rumors of another young woman who recently made a life for herself away from the glare of society. Her search leads her to the market town of Marlborough where, in spite of her efforts to avoid attention, she can't seem to elude local solicitor Nash Banfield.

All Nash wants is a quiet, sedate life--no risks or surprises. When Margaretta, clearly on the run and unwilling to answer questions, interrupts his solitude, his curiosity and his principles won't let him leave this determined woman without assistance.

But will discovering the truth about Margaretta make him think twice about finally taking a risk on love?

A Search for Refuge is an e-only novella that gives an exciting introduction to Kristi Ann Hunter's new Regency historical romance series, Haven Manor! Includes an extended excerpt of the first full-length novel in the series, A Defense of Honor.

MY THOUGHTS

I fell in love with Kristi Ann Hunter's writing three years ago when I read her A Noble Masquerade, her debut novel that kicked off The Hawthorne House series, and I am excited for this new series. I read this free e-novella back as soon as it was released in March and have been eagerly waiting for more. A Search for Refuge introduces the series and setting of Haven Manor. Though short, this tale brims with endearing characters, stirring scenes, and heartbreaking realities of life in the early nineteenth century. Of course, it was easy to like Margaretta and Nash, as the main characters, but widowed store owner Mrs. Lancaster totally stole my heart! Don't miss this wonderful story.

Tomorrow, my review of A Defense of Honor, Book 1 in this delightful series!

Darkwater Secrets

Darkwater Secrets
Darkwater Inn, Book 1
Robin Caroll
(Gilead Publishing)
ISBN: 978-1683700685
July 2017/272 pages/$15.99

A murder investigation uncovers sordid secrets and haunting mistakes

The Darkwater Inn stands tall and proud in the French Quarter, the hub of New Orleans. Bourbon Street is bustling, and general manager Adelaide Fountaine has her hands full with a hotel at capacity. But she is shocked when a body is found: a hotel guest stabbed with a kitchen knife.

Detective Beau Savoie, Adelaide's childhood friend, is on the case. As Beau digs into the victim's past, he unearths a shocking connection between Adelaide and the murdered guest. Beau is hurt that his friend--the woman he's quietly loved for years--kept the truth from him. To make matters worse, the stress of the investigation has sent Adelaide right into the comforting arms of her coworker Dimitri. But Beau can't press Adelaide too hard . . . because he's keeping secrets of his own.

Can Adelaide and Beau afford to hide from the truth with a killer on the loose?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I love boxing. I love Hallmark movies. I love fishing. I love scrapbooking. Nope, I’ve never fit into the boxes people have wanted to put me in.” ~Robin Caroll is definitely a contradiction, but one that beckons you to get to know her better. When she isn’t writing, Robin spends quality time with her husband of twenty-six years, her three beautiful daughters and two handsome grandsons, and their character-filled pets at home.

Robin gives back to the writing community by serving as Executive Director/Conference Director for ACFW. Her books have finaled/placed in such contests as the Carol Award, Holt Medallion, Daphne du Maurier, RT Reviewer’s Choice Award, Bookseller’s Best, and Book of the Year.

Visit her website or connect with her on social media.

MY THOUGHTS

Robin Caroll once again displays her ability to rob me of all sense of time or place in her brand-new thriller. Even the titles of this series and first novel send a chill up my spine. While I'm not sure I would be brave enough to actually spend a weekend at a hotel with such a name as Darkwater Inn, I gladly "checked in" for the length of time it took me to devour this story. Caroll weaves a mysterious tale populated with believable and sympathetic characters and a plot that becomes more complex with every chapter. Each time I thought I had determined the resolution and identified the culprit, a new layer took me another direction. As always, Caroll's expert pacing and ability to make the reader vicariously experience each emotion and situation kept me glued to the pages. A subtle but steady faith message reminds the reader of the long-term damage that buried secrets cause. Darkwater Secrets is a must for your summer reading list.

Miss Serena's Secret

Miss Serena's Secret
Regency Brides: The Promise of Hope, Book 2
Carolyn Miller
(Kregel Publications)
ISBN: 978-0825445347
July 2018/344 pages/$14.99

With devastating scars in her past, Serena Winthrop is sure no man can be trusted--especially not a man like the too-smooth Viscount Carmichael. His reputation as a flirt and a gambler is everything she despises. And the young artist makes sure that this disreputable heir to an earldom knows of her deep disapproval whenever they encounter one another.

Henry, Lord Carmichael, is perfectly aware of his charms. He's gambled with plenty of ladies' hearts as easily as he has with their husbands' money. But lately he's wondered if there's more to life--and if his actions might prove unworthy of an admirable wife such as his friends have found.

When Serena's guardian asks his best friend to protect his young ward, Henry promises to be on his best behavior and not to woo her. But the more he learns of her, the more he realizes she might be his best reason for changing his character.

Then the lady's painting leads her to London infamy. Now Henry must choose between the life mapped out for him as the earl apparent and the love of his life. And Serena's secret may mean the end of his titled family line.

This second novel in a new series by internationally popular author Carolyn Miller is full of the rich historical detail and evocative writing her readers enjoy. The witty banter will continue to draw in fans of Jane Austen, Sarah Ladd, and Julie Klassen.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Carolyn Miller lives in New South Wales, Australia, with her husband and four children. A longtime lover of Regency romance, Carolyn's novels have won a number of RWA and ACFW contests. MY THOUGHTS

Sigh. I became a fan of Carolyn Miller's writing last year with her debut series, Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace, and she remains firmly on my must-read author list with this new series. Miss Serena's Secret capitivated me from the opening paragraphs and I couldn't set it aside until I finished. Endearing characters along with lively and witty repartee bring the Regency setting to life, and each emotion experienced by Serana found purchase within my own heart. Miller perfectly renders a sigh-worthy romance reminiscent of Jane Austen and other period authors. I'm already eager for The Making of Mrs. Hale, coming in November. MY THOUGHTS

Galveston, Texas is one of my family's favorite destinations, and I love discovering novels featuring this historical city. Kathleen Y'Barbo creates a delightful tale featuring engaging characters and an intriguing plot in the midst of this bustling city, including a lesser-known hurricane that impacted the area in the mid-1850s. I particularly loved the references to the site of Jean Lafitte's home, La Maison Rouge. Jonah and Madeline endeared themselves to me and their repartee made me laugh. A delightful blend of danger and romantic tension, as well as an unexpected villain, adds to the enjoyment of this story. My Heart Belongs in Galveston, Texas--and yours will, too! Minding the Light
Minding the Light, Book 2
Suzanne Woods Fisher
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800721633
July 2018/336 pages/$15.99

How could I have expected so much? How could I have given her so little in return?"

Six long years ago, Captain Reynolds Macy sailed away from his bride, looking forward to the day when he would return to Nantucket Island with a ship's hold full of whale oil. But when that momentous day finally arrives, Ren soon discovers that everything has changed in his absence. Everything.

Unlike most islanders, bold and spirited Daphne Coffin doesn't defer to Ren as an authoritative whalemaster, but sees through his aloofness to the aching heart beneath. She encourages him to return to his Quaker roots and "mind the Light," finding solace in God and community. As Ren becomes the man she believes him to be--honorable, wise, faithful--she finds herself falling in love with him.

But how can she, when her heart is spoken for?

MY THOUGHTS

I love curling up with a Suzanne Woods Fisher book for I know I will be immersed in a story that will delight as well as challenge and inspire me. Minding the Light is just such a novel, and I was swept away to nineteenth-century Nantucket Island and the fledgling Quaker whaling community introduced in Phoebe's Light. Once again, Fisher creates a multi-layered story filled with authentic tragedies and triumphs that befall the coastal community. Complex, relatable characters remind the reader that although centuries pass, people do not change so very much, and the need to "mind the Light" is as relevant today as it was then. I'm already eager for the third book in this series, The Light Before Day, coming in October. Don't miss this stirring novel and series.

Her novels stand out for their "wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters" (Publishers Weekly), "gripping storyline[s]," (RT Book Reviews), and "sizzling undercurrent of romance" (USA Today).

Her Alaskan Courage series and Chesapeake Valor series have received praise from readers and critics alike and spent multiple months topping the CBA bestseller lists. Dani has also been honored with multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, a Christy Award finalist, two National Readers' Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing's Best Award.

From her early years eagerly reading Nancy Drew mysteries, to paging through Agatha Christie novels or watching on-the-edge-of-her-seat adventure movies, Dani has always enjoyed mystery and suspense. She considers herself blessed to be able to write the kind of stories she loves--full of plot twists and peril, love, and longing for hope and redemption. Her greatest joy as an author is sharing the stories God lays on her heart. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband. Their two daughters, a son-in-law, and two adorable grandsons also reside in Maryland. For more information about her novels, visit danipettrey.com.

MY THOUGHTS

I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the previous Chesapeake Valour books, and Dani Pettrey brings the series to a satisfying close with another captivating story. While each book can be read as a standalone, it is much more gratifying to read them all as each story contains recurring characters while focusing on one individual within a group of friends who work in a variety of law enforcement jobs. As always, Pettrey fills the pages with adrenaline-laced action, heartpounding suspense, and romance that keeps the reader's heart thumping for a totally different reason! No need for caffeinated drinks as you read this high-octane novel! Dead Drift will keep you awake late into the night as you determine to read just one more chapter again and again until you reach the breathless conclusion. Run, don't walk, to pick up your copy of this gripping novel!
