She found peace in a time of war.

Desperate to save her dying mother, an American woman accepts her newspaper's assignment to travel to Italy where she takes photographs dangerously close to the front lines during World War II. But Rachel's real motive in this journey is to find the father she never knew, an artist she hopes can offer the comfort and support both she and her mother need to survive at such a desperate time.

In her quest, Rachel becomes involved with what will become the Monuments Men effort to save great monuments and works of art from the Third Reich. Soon enough she will find more than she ever imagined--in war, in love, and in God.

Cara Putman is an award-winning author with seven World War II homefront books in print. Her minor in history combined with her love of World War II history and the generation that fought then as heroes compel her to take the steps to get the historical details and research right. As a result, her readers have come to expect stories that sweep them back in time while illustrating a facet of the war they didn’t know existed. While her prior books have focused on homefront stories, this series will broaden to reach the European theater, without the battlefield scenes one would expect.

I love novels set in World War II, and this story presents a new facet with which I was not familiar. Cara Putman has created a fascinating fictional tale based on a group of individuals who had an important role in the war. I loved the title as soon as I saw it, and it became even more special as I read the book and connected its meaning to the story. Pulsating with the emotion of war, romance, and family relationships, this novel whisked me across time to this pivotal era in world history. I won't ever look at a classic painting or sculpture that predates WW II without thinking of this book and the men who risked all to ensure that these treasures were saved for future generations. Start your year off right with this moving story!
