Then Sings My Soul Saturday - We've Got the Spirit!

As I prepare this post on Halloween night, I know many do not see this as a night of family fun filled with candy and children's innocent costumes. A lost world is deceived by Satan's schemes and many are lured by "the powers of this dark world and . . . the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms".

Yet we who are believers can rejoice "because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us."

And not only that, but "the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." Now that's something to celebrate!

Two really short songs are two of my very favorites about the Holy Spirit. The first one has been around for many, many years. When I was growing up, it was mostly used as a choral response at the end of a prayer. I love the heartfelt words of commitment and how the song delineates each step in the process of our being completely filled with the Spirit.

SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD

Spirit of the Living God,
Fall afresh on me,
Spirit of the Living God,
Fall afresh on me
Break me, melt me,
Mold me, fill me,
Spirit of the Living God,
Fall afresh on me.

WORDS & MUSIC: Daniel Iverson, 1935

The second one, much loved as a camp song and "Sunday night song", was written in 1962 by Doris Akers as a result of a leading her choir in their preservice prayer meeting.
"The Holy Spirit came down on me and my choir in a sweet gentle sense of powerful presence. I could see Him displayed on the choir members' warm expressions! I didn't know how the prayer meeting could conclude and wondered whether I should send word to the waiting pastor and congregation in the church sanctuary."

Of course, the harmony of the Gaither Vocal Band & Signature Sound quartets knock this one right out of the building!

SWEET SWEET SPIRIT

There's a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place,
And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord.
There are sweet expressions on each face,
And I know that it's the presence of the Lord.

Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove,
Stay right here with us, filling us with Your love;
And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise:
Without a doubt we'll know that we have been revived,
When we shall leave this place.

WORDS & MUSIC: Doris Mae Akers, 1962

  9. Thanks for sharing these, Linda! I remember the first from when I was a child, the second was absolutely beautiful! I loved listening to them. And...for the comment on my post, yup - we sit around talking about how we're pretty sure we're related to the Israelites 'cause we are SO dense most of the time. :)

  12. I know the first but not the second. My friend Melodee and I used to get the giggles when we'd sing "Breathe On Me." In our immaturity, we thought that was hilarious. Sigh. Dumb kid!
