TSMSS - A Tribute

April 20, 1999

It's hard to believe that Monday will be the 10th anniversary of the horrific Columbine tragedy. It was an unprecedented event and one that opened the eyes of safe suburban America to the potential for unspeakable tragedy that can happen. And the chilling realization that at least two of the victims, Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott, apparently stood up for their faith and were killed as a result, juxtaposed faith and inspiration with fear and dread in the heart of believers across the country.

When I recently read and reviewed Rachel's Tears, I was once again touched by this tragedy and yet I was also reminded of how God's sovereign hand continues to work good out of evil as these lives of these young believers continue to make an impact a decade after their death.

Many of you will remember Michael W. Smith's song that he wrote in honor of Cassie Bernall. I thought it fitting that we should reflect on this song at this milestone anniversary. And Smitty's comments about the changes he made to the initial song are yet another picture of God ministering to a hurting family in the seemingly smallest of details.

  1. "I was also reminded of how God's sovereign hand continues to work good out of evil"

    My latest post is entitled:

"a loving God. evil and suffering."

Columbine was one of the examples that came to my mind. I didn't remember the anniversary date. Thank you for reminding us. I've added the Columbine families to my prayer list this week. It must be an especially difficult time for the them.

  2. I had never heard of this song! I don't know how I didn't.

    Good song.

A comment you made was lived out in my life today. Just have to share...

At my office we have been passing around a birthday card for one of our voluteers. since her birthday was yesterday and she was scheduled to work today, we just waited to give it to her today. Our director bought her a beautiful potted flowering plant as a gift and the card was full of encouraging words.

When we gave her everything, She informed us that we had her birthday wrong, I had written the wrong month down, but got the day right.

What's funny is that tomorrow is the anniversary of her dad's death and she really struggles with it. she got that really encouraging card and the beautiful flowers righ when she needed them most.

God does know how to directly comfort his children in exactly the right way at exactly the right time.

    Happy TSMS Saturday!

  3. I've always loved this song and who doesn't love MWS. My daughter read Cassie's story in She Said Yes. She asked me to read it and I've never forgotten it or her stand. I pray that when faced with her challenge, I would be able to say Yes...I believe in God.

Thank you for reminding me of the date, I had not released.

  5. I don't really remember when Columbine happened, because I was a kid, but I definitely want to read some of the books which have been written about it since. :(

  7. Blessings Linda & Congratulations along with Amy,

How tragic! How senseless! Columbine and the great loss of innocent people. I know it changed & solidified my not staying a teacher. (Coward, I guess not at all like Cassie Bernall...a beautiful testimony of standing firm for her beliefs). May God give each of us this strength!

How wonderful Michael W. Smith & so sensitive to the Spirit and also to
the family. The bagpies are so beautiful in that song!

How uplifting of a tribute! Thank you for recalling this to our minds & hearts so that we may pray!
(if it's ok with you, may I link your blog for this Monday in my Mission 4 Monday meme/blog-since you have already honored them so well?)

  9. Linda, thank you for sharing this one. It's amazing to learn that Michael changed the song and how Cassie loved bagpipes. Only God knew! I can hardly believe it's already been 10 years but I'm glad that you reminded me of that date.
