It's June, So Why Is It a School Day?

Did your kids sing this?

This is the song that never ends,
Yes it goes on and on my friend.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue singing it forever just because...
(repeat ad infinitum and ad nauseum)

That song has been on my mind lately, only the first line has been replaced with "This is the school year that never ends."

I don't remember the last time school wasn't out by Memorial Day, and it's certainly out by May 31. (I always felt sorry for those northern states that I've heard go until mid-June, but we don't have to deal with blizzard days down here.) Not this year. Wednesday is our last day, and some districts in the area don't finish until this Friday.

All because the Texas Legislature decided they should dictate when schools were allowed to start in August. They gave some nonsense reason about not cutting into summer, saving on school air conditioning costs, and tourism.

I'm not sure what part of temps in the 90's and Memorial Day doesn't qualify as summer to those folks under the Dome. It's not like this is Minnesota.

I'd write more, but I have to take my girl to school.

  2. our kids get out earlier and then have to go back before Labor Day...usually around the 1st week in august...ugh...it's horribly hot that first four weeks of school.

i remember not going back until after labor day and it would actually feel like fall...oh, sweet memories :)

sorry for your frustration...i feel your pain and now, sing your song! thanks a lot....

  3. Here in Southern California, we begin school right after Labor Day and we end on June 18th. No school in June sounds like a dream. Of course, I don't want to teach in the hot days of August either. LOL

Hope this week flies by for you and your summer is a great one!

  4. Here in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, most schools get out the first week of June. And it's STATE LAW that no school can start until after Labor Day. So our school year is pretty set.

I don't think most city schools build snow days into the calendar anymore. We're just too darn efficient at getting rid of the stuff.

But when we lived in the country for four years? Oh my word. We had snow days all the time (buses couldn't manage the gravel roads with snow or ice), yet the schools STILL got out before Memorial Day. (So the kids could get to work on the family farms.) Weird.

  5. I know...it's sort of weird having school in June. Nathan finishes Thursday, and his entire last week is just babysitting...tropical day, talent show day, borad game day....what a waste!

  7. I know what you mean. It's crazy hot here too. Yesterday we went downtown to the Quarter to eat for my hubby's birthday, and it was officially our last trip downtown until December, maybe even January. It's just too durn hot. :)
