This is one of the old hymns that I loved singing as a child. I can't help smiling and tapping my foot when I hear it! The video intro makes it sound like it's a new song, but it was written in 1881 - that's only new compared with some other hymns that go back to the 18th century or earlier!
THE LILY OF THE VALLEY
I have found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay;
He tells me every care on Him to roll.
REFRAIN:
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tower;
I have all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
From my heart and now He keeps me by His power.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.
(REFRAIN)
He will never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessèd will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear,
From His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory to see His blessèd face,
Where the rivers of delight shall ever roll.
(REFRAIN)
WORDS: Charles W. Fry, 1881 (Salvation Army Hymnal)
MUSIC: William Shakespeare Hays, 1881

I enjoyed singing along!:-) *hugs* Thanks for sharing a familiar hymn.
I love the old hymns, too. We still sing this one at our church sometimes.
Heidi
I love it when you post these songs and I get to travel back to my childhood and pretend I'm in the little church I grew up in ;-)
Still as beautiful today as it was years ago...timeless melody and lyrics....
haven't heard this in a while...beautiful! I love the old hymns.
Love the old hymns. I found a children's CD with hymns. I am loving playing it for my daughter. I want her to grow up loving these hymns, too. We just don't hear in most churches anymore.
Thanks for the blessing.
Lovely old hymn. Thanks for sharing.
Have a Blessed Day,
Sherry
Beautiful hymn! Happy Sabbath!
I loved that, Linda, tapped my foot too. :)
I loved this one Linda. I was singing along with the words you posted. I also love Fairest Lord Jesus.
For some reason, the last few weeks I had trouble accessing your blog. And I always love your posts on TSMSS because you chose many of the songs I've loved and know. But I'm glad there is no longer a problem. So, I'll be back each week for sure.
I miss the hymns like this.
I loved this! I haven't heard this since I was about 13!
I have really enjoyed reading your blog. What a great song. Many Blessings,
I sang this all the time as a child. I liked it because you could tap your toe--under the pew, of course.
I love that song too! Oh I love all the songs I used to sing! I wish that we could have an ole' time hymnsing just to sing them again!
Thanks for promoting the great hymns of the faith. They still sound an answering chord in our hearts. How often have I thought, on reading or singing one, "That's exactly how I feel!" Or maybe, "That's exactly what I'd say, if I had a poet's skill. God bless.
