Though the earth give way. . . .

The pictures coming out of Haiti are staggering in their portrayal of the devastation in Port au Prince. But as heartbreaking as they are, I know pictures don't begin to describe the destruction and misery.

I am struck by the utter desolation and hopelessness in the eyes of the Haitians. Their physical suffering is eclipsed by their spiritual pain for the many individuals who do not know Christ. I pray that they would turn to Him and find refuge and peace in the midst of their despair.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.

5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

8 Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields [b] with fire.

10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah
Psalm 46

3 When the earth and all its people quake,
it is I who hold its pillars firm.
Selah
Psalm 75:3

Heaven and earth will pass away,
but My words will never pass away.
Matthew 24:35

  1. Wonderfully comforting selections of scripture.

    The director of our Elder Respite Care Program has a husband serving on a team currently in Hatti, as of last night she had not heard from him. The pictures coming out this morning on the news are just beyond description.

    We are all praying for all those who live in Hatti as well as all the brothers and sisters who are there serving on the mission field.

    Blessings
    Robin

  2. And it is up to those of us not suffering in the midst of this tragedy to be the hands and arms (and wallet) of God.

  3. Wonderful verses Linda! Our church is closely connected with Missionaries down in Haiti. You may have heard, but on their blog they spoke of hearing people singing praises to God in the darkness, and many people praying! Even in the midst of tragedy, PRAISING GOD!!!

  4. Our church denomination sent out a prayer request. It seems that the 4 missionaries we had on site are all unaccounted for.

    My great-niece, just 6 years old, was so upset by what she saw on the news that she requested permission to send the contents of her piggy bank. Then she challenged the rest of the family to meet her donation.
