Amish Proverbs
Suzanne Woods Fisher
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0-8007-1953-1
August, 2010/208 pages/$13.99

Simplify your life with Amish wisdom

Through firsthand research and personal relationships, Suzanne Woods Fisher has collected more than 200 proverbs that uncover the rich heritage, folklore, faith, values, history, and essence of the Plain People. These proverbs serve as teaching tools and maxims for practical living--but they're not just for the Amish. They're for anyone who seeks God's wisdom and truth for everyday circumstances.

Ranging from the simple to the profound, from the serious to the humorous, these sayings will stick with you through life's joys and sorrows. With beautiful full-color photos throughout, Amish Proverbs is the perfect gift for any occasion.

You can read an excerpt here.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Suzanne Woods Fisher is the CBA bestselling author of The Choice, The Waiting, Amish Peace, and Amish Proverbs. Her interest in the Anabaptist cultures can be directly traced to her grandfather, W. D. Benedict, who was raised in the Old Order German Baptist Brethren Church in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Benedict eventually became publisher of Christianity Today magazine. Suzanne is the host of a radio show called Amish Wisdom and her work has appeared in many magazines. She lives in California.

MY THOUGHTS:
This is a lovely book. Proverbs are divided into sections such as Time, Work Ethic, Handling Adversity, and more. Each section begins with an explanation and example of Amish life relating to that topic and is followed by several pages of proverbs interspersed with beautiful photographs of Amish country, food, and quilts. While a few of the proverbs are universal and were familiar to me, many were not. One particularly caught my eye when I initially flipped through the book and it fell open at a random page:
It may be difficult to wait on the Lord,
but it is worse to wish you had.

This will make a delightful book to keep on the coffee table, in the "necessary room", or by your bedside. It would also make a wonderful gift.

  1. Oh man! I had this book in my hand the other day at the retreat. I put it down top look at something else, but had every intention of buying it. however, when I reached to pick it back up, it was gone, and the lady who'd taken it was already writing her check at the cash register. It was the only copy on the sales table! I am so entering this contest!
