First Hodgepodge of 2012

1. What are three words you would use to describe your 2011?

Busy, stressful, exhausting.

2. Do you like shrimp? What's your favorite way to have it prepared?

Yes, especially grilled. Bonus points if it's wrapped with bacon!

3. Is your house de-Christmased? If so when did you tackle that job? If not, when will the decorations come down?

Yep. I did it Friday and Saturday. I'm usually ready for it to come down the minute Christmas is over, but since we had an artificial tree this year, I didn't feel quite so pressured.

4. Do you like to watch scary movies?

No. I had some real-life scary experiences as a child that pretty much traumatized me. I don't need movies to dredge any of that up or add anything to my imagination!

5. Ice skating~sledding~skiing~snowboarding~of the four listed which wintertime activity do you most enjoy?

Watching ice skating and skiing on television!

6. Did you have a childhood hideout? Describe it.

I wouldn't call it a hideout, particularly, but the tree in our front yard had two big branches that formed a V just perfectly that I loved to sit in and I'd sometimes take a book up there.

7. What's a place or space that motivates you?

I have no idea. For me, motivation comes from inside or from other people or from situations, not from a physical place.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Yesterday brought an unexpected teary-eyed moment as my boy had his last check-up with our pediatrician. I hadn't really thought about it until I was sitting with him in the waiting room and a couple of moms were reading to their little ones. We love our pediatrician and have had a really great relationship with him. We've remembered his birthday, cooked him a meal when he was out with a back injury, taken them plates of Christmas goodies, had spiritual conversations -- so many sweet memories came to mind as I sat there. He and his wife (his nurse practitioner) even sent me flowers when I had major surgery almost 15 years ago. My kids have never dreaded going to the doctor. At the end of the appointment, he and I reminisced about my boy's hospitalizations for viral meningitis (age 7 months), pneumonia (15 months), rotovirus (2 1/2 years), and two incidents of stitches. He'll still see my boy for illnesses as needed when he's home from college until he's 21, but that chapter is basically closed. And my girl sees his wife for most visits. It really caught me by surprise how much it impacted me. Sniff, sniff!

  1. I remember when I saw my pediatrician for the last time. His name was Dr. Stephens....and I too felt safe with him and loved. It was a strange day when I walked into a new doctors office to be treated....and I have never had that same feeling with a doctor again. He even came to my house once when I was little and having a major asthma attack....because he was closer to me....than we were to the hospital. That doesn't happen much anymore.

  3. Of all the ways I've had shrimp, I don't believe that I've ever had it wrapped in bacon. Sounds yummy ... definitely going to have to try that soon! ;-)

I haven't read anyone's answers yet that like scary movies. Maybe it's just the younger generation who likes them?
Having our children grow up is something we want yet something we just don't seem ready to give up.

  5. Watching ice skating on television is one of my favorite shows. Our daughters' pediatrician will always be in our minds. He was fantastic.

  7. Loved your Random Thought. How wonderful that you've been able to be with the same doctor all of these years. I cannot imagine how satisfying that profession must be...to watch your charges grow up before your eyes.
