Small Town Girl
Ann Gabhart
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800721848
July 2013/400 pages/$14.99

How long can two people stand on the brink of love without plunging in headfirst?

In the autumn of 1941, rumors of war whisper through Rosey Corner. The town practically vibrates with apprehension, as if it is holding its breath. But for Kate Merritt, it seems life is letting out a prolonged sigh. As Kate watches her sister marry the man Kate has loved since she was fifteen, her heart is silently breaking. And even the attentions of Jay Tanner, the handsome best man, can't draw her interest.

Then suddenly, Pearl Harbor changes everything and Kate finds herself drawn to Jay in surprising ways. Could she truly be in love with him? And if he enlists, will she ever see him again?

In her gentle and textured style, Ann H. Gabhart tells a timeless story of love, sacrifice, and longing that will grip your heart and stir your spirit. Fans of Gabhart's Angel Sister will love seeing Kate Merritt all grown-up, as well as other characters they have come to love.

MY THOUGHTS

I dearly loved Angel Sister (reviewed here) and was delighted to discover that Ann Gabhart is allowing us to revisit Rosey Corner and peek in on these delightful characters, as well as meet some new ones, in Small Town Girl, set five years after that first book. (While this is a stand-alone novel, you don't want to miss Angel Sister if you haven't read it!) Once again, Gabhart has crafted a story that engages all of the senses. The creak of the screen door, the sweetness of brown sugar pie, the warmth of love, and the dread of fear all wafted off the pages of this book and immersed me in this novel as if I were physically in Rosey Corner. Richly developed characters populate this tiny town and this novel, and just like any community, some were easy to love and a few were a pain in the neck! Issues of love, trust, forgiveness, and faith mingle together, making this a story to savor and experience. Don't miss it!
