MY THOUGHTS

I generally eschew fantasy novels, much preferring reality-based fiction. However, I couldn't pass up the chance to review this middle-grade novel penned by one of my favorite authors and her granddaughter. DiAnn Mills sets the bar when it comes to suspense novels, but her granddaughter Grace Egert convinced her to join forces with her in this captivating tale of a girl with a special birthmark, a rare dragon, and a dangerous quest. Egert has a delightful imagination and her input adds a fresh voice to this story. I was enthralled by the Ancient Writings that headed each chapter and enchanted by Arroah and her innocent yet determined personality. The world of Elysium and its vocabulary charmed me. I would love to find some healing wardlefruit the next time I have an injury or illness! Mills tucks in some age-appropriate suspense, adding just the right amount of tension and angst. Allegorical lessons weave naturally throughout this story, and I smiled as the story came to a satisfying conclusion. Since this is Book 1, I am already eagerly anticipating more from this creative and talented duo. This is a great summer read-together novel for you and the young reader in your life.
