Just in case you were wondering, I'm not a hymn "purist" - I do enjoy many of today's contemporary songs. But I so dearly love the classic hymns I grew up on. And one of the disadvantages I see with so many churches trending toward "words on the screen" is that the beautiful four-part harmony is sorely lacking. I particularly love hearing bass voices wander around the lower register as they sing!
As you prepare your hearts for this coming week when we focus our hearts on thanking God for all our many blessings, enjoy the words and the harmony of these beautiful Thanksgiving hymns!
Be sure to visit Amy's blog for more Then Sings My Soul Saturday songs!
I agree with out about the harmony verses the screen...when I attend the traditional service at my church, I STILL use the hymnal-I don't trust the screen ;)
And this IS one of my favorites-thanksgiving or not!
We have started doing a hymn of the month and are focusing on the older hymns. Love to hear 4 part harmony. Fortunaly my Mr. Visionary's family sings when they get together and sound so awesome!!
Blessings Linda...I remember this hymn...perfect choice for Thanksgiving and I love that fall scene background with the words!
You are so right about the harmony of bass, tenor, alto & soprano. I so love to hear that also.
Did someone make a comment about only liking "hymns"? I think it's great to have someone who chooses these plus I always appreciate the background info you share. I do not hear much of either the contemporary or the classic hymns so I appreciate getting the mix. I hardly know the current music until I go home or now catch one here at TSMSS...I've seen you post others song not "purist"...(lol).
Bless you for thinking ahead and sharing a THANKSGIVING with us! Hmmm...it was so good! Awww, my videos stuck at "Sing praises to His Name"(45 sec.)guess that's my cue! Happy Thanksgiving & God Bless you & your loved ones this week!
I think that reading music is becoming a lost art. I have to believe that many people learned out of neccessity because of hymn books, but now all you need is the ability to read the words on the screen.
Now look what you've done...you got me up on my soapbox. I'm stepping down now....
I'm in my "fabulous fifties" and my husband and I have been married 25 years. We have a son and a daughter who are both in college. so we are reluctantly entering the empty-nest years. I was an RN in my former (pre-kids) life which comes in handy as I serve in our church's care ministry.
Chatting over a cup of coffee with a friend to encourage and support one another (and share a laugh or even a tear) is one of my favorite things to do.

I love 4 part harmony and must agree it is lacking with words on screen. I had never put the two together, but totally see (hear) it now.
I really enjoyed listening to your pick this week.

Sometimes you just have to play the old hymns. Beautiful song.

I really do appreciate some of the older hymns. The words have such meaning and the one you posted is especially meaningful this time of year.
