Friday Odds & Ends

Amazingly, only one person besides the pilot was killed yesterday, and only two folks had to be transported to the hospital, when the pilot crashed his plane into a seven-story office building here. As I'm sure most of you have heard, he was an angry, troubled man, and prior to crashing the plane he set fire to his house.

Last night the media were still displaying their brilliant reporting skillz. A reporter at the scene on the evening news informed us that "You can see how blackened the building is."

Um, it's a black building, lady!

I passed a truck the other day from a business which will haul your junk away. Their slogan made me laugh:

Satisfaction Guaranteed
or twice your junk back!

I imagine that guarantee cuts down on complaints!

My MIL sent me a few Maxine cartoons the other day. I was surprised to discover that the cartoonist is a man. Anyway, here are a couple of my favorites:

And since I coordinate our church's Care Ministry, I thought I could make some notecards from this:

Or maybe not. . .!

Thrills and Spills seemed to be the theme of these Olympics. In the Women's Alpine Downhill on Wednesday, it was great seeing Lindsey Vonn win her gold medal, but -- ouch! -- there were some painful crashes. And I'm not sure which would be more heartbreaking: to fall right out of the starting gate as one skier did, or to crash just short of the finish line, as several others did.

And in the category "Crazy Sports", those snowboarders are something else. The Men's Half-Pipe event Wednesday night was amazing. Shaun White is incredible. Even after he had won the Gold Medal, he took an optional run - and scored 48.4 of a possible 50! The women are almost as crazy astounding. I cringed when a couple of them didn't clear the top of the half-pipe and fell/slid 22 feet down the icy snow.

And although I don't enjoy the men's figure skating as much as the pairs or the ladies, I thought the performance by the USA's Evan Lysacek was excellent. It's so fun to see the emotion when they make it through their routine successfully. I'm so glad he got the Gold!

  1. No TV. No Olympics. No figure skaters. No happy! Today we finally got internet, cable & phone, but our TV won't arrive before March 4th.

  2. ahahaha I love Maxine. The "shoulder to cry on" is the best one. I'm so stealing that. lol. Evan Lysacek skated beautifully. Sadly, I was to tired to stay up and watch the rest of the skaters. I was elated to read he won the gold. I can't wait for the ice dancing. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend. Blessings, SusanD

  3. I love Maxine! For some reason I haven't been watching the Olympics this year, although I did see a little of the curling at work the other day. They had it on in dispatch and when I'd pass through I'd watch for a couple of minutes.

  4. So the fire turned the building black. Thank goodness for great reporters or we would still be wondering how such a phenomenon occurred!

Need a shoulder to cry on--pull off to the side of the road...
    WAHAHAHAHA!!
    I HAD to copy that!

  5. I'm sooo thankful no one was hurt in the building. I bet there will be stories of people who needed to run unexpected errands that kept them away from the office. Or someone calling them to the other side of the building. Amazing

On a lighter note: I LOVE Maxine!!! I have a Maxine pen holder and used to have a calendar. I need to find another calendar. Maybe today I'll look for a daily calendar. I could probably find one half price. Thanks for the humor!

  6. I would never have guessed Maxine's lines were written by a man!

I agree about Shaun White! Amazing! I thought the girls' half-pipe was somewhat anti-climactic after the guys.

I love the men's figure skating, and Evan did brilliantly.

  7. This year I am watching the Olympics more than usual. Maybe it's because I'm bored, but whatever, I'm enjoying it too!

    Those Maxine cartoons are great.

  9. I still can't believe that guy burning his house and crashing into the building. It feels too close to home since I live in Austin. It's weird watching on the news and seeing familiar landmarks now ravaged by that destruction.

Love Maxine! Yay for the olympics!!!

  10. Wow, didn't know about the plane crash. We don't have tv and I missed it! Of course I am missing ice skating too! Bummer.

  11. Linda, I'm an avid figure skating fan and loved seeing the Chinese couple win the Gold this week. I watched the men's short program but didn't watch the long because I didn't think anyone could beat Evgeni Plushenko, who I don't care for. Imagine my surprise when I heard that Evan Lysacek had won! And then I read about how flawed the scoring was for placing Evan higher than Evgeni when he didn't even attempt the quad. I realize jumps are important, but I enjoy skating because of its musical interpretation as well as athleticism, and Evgeni just isn't fun to watch - in my humble opinion!
