Texas Ranger Brody Calhoun is with his parents in west Texas when an unexpected attack injures the brother of Rebecca Morgan, Brody's high school sweetheart. The local sheriff, a good friend, asks for Brody's help. At first, it seems an open-and-shut case.

As Brody digs deeper, he realizes the attack may be related to an organized crime trial Rebecca will be overseeing. With Rebecca's help, he compiles evidence involving cattle rustling, bribery and dirty payoffs that shatter the entire community and put Rebecca directly in the line of fire.

Brody expects to protect her. What he never expects is to fall for Rebecca all over again, or for a murder to throw the case wide open. Is Brody's faith strong enough to withstand not only deep-rooted corruption and cattle rustling but also love?

MY THOUGHTS

I loved the first two books in Margaret Daley's Men of the Texas Rangers series, but this one is my favorite so far. (Click on the titles for my reviews of Saving Hope and Shattered Silence.) These are stand-alone novels, connected only by the common thread that a Texas Ranger is the hero. I don't recommend starting this book if you have any pressing commitments before you can read it straight through because it is completely riveting. Daley has masterfully crafted a tale of intrigue and suspense with layers that twist and deepen as the story unfolds. As she allows the reader a glimpse of the evil lurking and biding its time to wreak more havoc on Rebecca's family, the characters' hearts aren't the only ones that are pounding! A final twist at the resolution left me slack-jawed. If you enjoy suspense, this is a must-read! I'm already eagerly awaiting the final Texas Rangers book, Severed Trust, coming this fall!
