Melody Carlson is a prolific author who writes novels for both adults and teens. My girl really enjoys the teen books.
Spring Breakdown is the latest book of the Carter House Girls series; although it is the seventh book, it is the first one I have read. (My daughter had the first book, and now that #7 has arrived in our house, I can see where this is headed. Because
of course she wouldn't dream of reading them out of order!) Since it is part of a series, there was a little bit of background information that I didn't know, but otherwise, it could be a stand-alone book. With characters nearing the end of their high school years,
Spring Breakdown deals with issues current teens face - peer pressure, mean girls, relationships with boys, and even underage drinking. I appreciate the way Melody Carlson has depicted the characters; several are Christians who endeavour to live out their faith and be a positive influence among their more "rambunctious" peers, yet they, too, are realistically flawed, occasionally falling prey to the emotional angst that teenagers are prone to display. And the undesirable consequences of the choices made by the reckless teens are presented realistically. If you have a teenage girl in your life, she will enjoy and benefit from this book and series.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books for teens, women, and children. Before publishing, Melody traveled around the world, volunteered in teen ministry, taught preschool, raised two sons, and worked briefly in interior design and later in international adoption. "I think real-life experiences inspire the best friction," she says. Her wide variety of books seems to prove this theory.
