MY THOUGHTS

Stirring. Tender. Grace-filled, Poignant. These words describe Cynthia Ruchti's novels and particularly her latest release, All My Belongings. Fully expecting to be engrossed, I was nevertheless unprepared for how deeply touched I was by this exquisitely crafted tale. As a master artist brings a canvas to life with an abundance of color, Ruchti skillfully touches on an array of life issues in this story, issues which on the surface might seem unrelated but which all speak to the heart's deepest longing. And while some authors might focus on message to the exclusion of story, Ruchti avoids that by creating compelling characters, a bit of intrigue, and a series of unfolding events that will make you pause and consider what you would do in such a situation. I don't think I've ever wanted to hug a character as much as I've wanted to hug Becca. And Isaac. And Geneva. I may have to read the book all over again! If you only read one book this summer, let it be All My Belongings! It will stay with you long after you turn the final page.

Multitasking the Hodgepodge

I always love when I have a chance to join Joyce for the Wednesday Hodgepodge!

1. What news story are you following right now?

The rain that we are finally getting in Central Texas!

2. What's the last thing you wanted but didn't get?

A solid night's sleep.

3. May 28th is National Hamburger Day...when did you last have a hamburger? Other than your own kitchen or BBQ grill, where is your favorite place to go for a hamburger? And for all you non-meat eaters out there...when you're invited to a cookout what is the one side dish you hope is on the menu?

I had a hamburger a couple of weeks ago at Chili's, I think. Theirs aren't as good as they used to be, though. The best one I've had recently is the Bacon Cheeseburger at BJ's. Although I get mine with Swiss cheese instead of cheddar.

4. How have your priorities changed over time?

I'm less concerned with the superficial and more focused on the eternal.

5. What's a favorite memory with your grandparents?

My paternal grandmother was wonderful. (My grandfather died when I was two.) I remember playing Crazy 8 and Scrabble and Canasta with her and being her "bedfellow" when we would visit her in her tiny apartment before she went into the nursing home.

6. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being fantastic!), how good are you at multitasking? Share an example.

I'm a mom! LOL I used to be a 10+ but I'm slowing down and might just be an 8 or 9 now. I am always aware of the time and what needs to happen next, know where my family is and if they need something, be blogging, cooking, running errands, etc., and keeping up with a game or two on my phone.

7. How would you summarize your highs and lows for the month of May?

Highs - my kids coming home from college. Low - will be saying goodbye to my girl Saturday morning as she heads off to her fun summer camp job out of state!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I loved this. Makes me miss my big brother.

The Heart's Pursuit

The Heart's Pursuit
Robin Lee Hatcher
(Zondervan)
ISBN: 978-0310259275
May 2014/320 pages/$15.99

A jilted bride desperate to save her family from ruin.
A bounty hunter seeking vengeance for a ravaged past.
An arduous trek toward justice—or redemption.

Silver Mattlock and Jared Newman know traveling together is a bad idea. Bad for Silver’s already tarnished reputation in her small Colorado town. Bad for bounty hunter Jared’s secret, single-minded mission for revenge. But Silver is determined to track down the rogue who left her at the altar and stole the last remnant of her father’s fortune. And Jared’s in a hurry to hunt down the murderer who destroyed his family—even if Silver is too distractingly beautiful for comfort.

The pair takes off over mountain and desert, past bleak homesteads and raw mining towns, hot on the trail of the two villains who took what wasn’t theirs to take. Soon supplies dwindle, secrets emerge, and suspicion leave Silver and Jared at odds when they need each other most. To confront an enemy deadlier than desert rattlesnakes and rocky cliffs, Silver and Jared must learn to forgive and trust and face the question they haven’t dared voice: What happens next?

MY THOUGHTS

Robin Lee Hatcher's writing talents are not confined to one genre and The Heart's Pursuit is a delightful novel set in the Old West. The story contains all of the aspects you would expect in such a setting but it is much more than dusty trails, rough personalities, and burgeoning towns. Hatcher has created compelling characters with wounded hearts and upended lives who wrestle with issues that transcend time and location. Vengeance, bitterness, and hate battle forgiveness, peace, and love in this satisfying novel. Grab your copy today!

Robin Lee Hatcher's latest novel, The Heart's Pursuit, is receiving critical praise: "The Old West lives again in this inspirational romantic adventure. . . . Themes of forgiveness, justice and mercy dominate the story and add to the characters' depth. Hatcher treats readers to a rich sensory experience—you can taste the desert dust and smell the smoke and stench of a crowded gambling hall." (Publishers Weekly)

CFBA - A Stitch and a Prayer

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Stitch and A Prayer
Abingdon Press (May 20, 2014)
by
Eva Gibson

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

(No image available) Eva Gibson is the author of twenty books, including A Stitch and a Prayer, the latest release in the Quilts of Love series from Abingdon Fiction. She currently teaches Writing Your Life Story classes for Portland Community College and is an active member of Oregon Christian Writers. She has lived most of her life on the family farm in Wilsonville, Oregon, which is the setting for her novel.

ABOUT THE BOOK

After her fiancĂ© returns from the Klondike gold rush in 1897, Florence Harms sets about building a new life in her new marriage—even though the lingering effects of illness have left her weak and vulnerable. She and her young husband, Will, work tirelessly to clear the land around their Northwest cabin, content with their modest life.

But then a stranger comes knocking and Florence suddenly senses a restlessness in Will’s spirit that she had never seen before. When he leaves her with only a note that tells her he will return before their baby’s birth, she is devastated, and the illness that stiffened her joints returns. Counting the days until Will walks back through her door, Florence busies herself with a Tree of Life quilt displaying a map of the farm they call home. Doubts claw at her heart as Florence struggles to believe Will’s promise to return to her. Will her labor of love—and faith in God—sustain her as she waits to see her beloved once again?

If you would like to read the first chapter of A Stitch and A Prayer, go HERE.

MY THOUGHTS

I enjoy many of Abingdon's Quilts of Love novels but this one didn't resonate with me. The story drags and is rather disjointed in places. I had a difficult time connecting with the characters and the premise. Some on this blog tour have really liked it while others have given it less enthusiastic reviews. I encourage you to check out other reviews and read the first chapter for yourself.

THE SONG - Coming soon!

I'm excited to tell you about an upcoming movie for which I received a press release, and I am doubly thrilled to be scheduled for an interview at ICRS with the man who has the lead role. Alan Powell, lead singer of Anthem Lights, will star in THE SONG as aspiring singer/songwriter Jed King as he struggles to catch a break and escape the long shadow of his father, a country music legend. After reluctantly accepting a gig at a local vineyard harvest festival, Jed is love-struck by the vineyard owner’s daughter, Rose (Ali Faulkner), and a romance quickly blooms. Soon after their wedding, Jed writes Rose “The Song,” which becomes a breakout hit. Thrust into a life of stardom and a world of temptation in the form of fellow performer Shelby Bale (Caitlin Nicol-Thomas), Jed’s life and marriage begin to fall apart.

The film was written and directed by Richard Ramsey and produced by City on a Hill Studio. The story is a modern-day adaptation of the life and writings of Solomon, found in the Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes. Samuel Goldwyn Films will release the film on September 26th.

“Richard Ramsey has created an incredibly touching and triumphant film about temptation, redemption and the power of forgiveness. We are proud to bring this moving and inspirational love story to the big screen and I’m certain it will resonate with audiences around the country,” said Meyer Gottlieb, President of Samuel Goldwyn Films.

THE SONG was filmed on location in Nashville and Kentucky – known for American music and family. Both figure heavily in the film. Music is more than a score in THE SONG; it is the backdrop from which the story unfolds. Viewers who love American music, indie singer-songwriters or dream of the allure of the road, will especially love THE SONG.

Produced by a top-notch group of story tellers who believe in love, faith and family, THE SONG is opening nation-wide including resources to strengthen couples and families.

And be watching for my interview with Alan Powell this summer!

With Jake's past now revealed, he's ready to use his talent for investigation again--but he could never prepare for where the mystery will take him.

Kayden's climbing expertise soon leads her and Jake to the realization that the death was no accident. And worse, it seems the killer is onto them. MY THOUGHTS

The McKenna siblings return in book four of Dani Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series, this one spotlighting Kayden McKenna as Pettrey once again combines breathless suspense and extreme adventure sports in this novel set in the rugged beauty of Alaska. Heart-pounding tension infuses the pages of this story--from Kayden's free climb up a cliff to the search for the killer of the man whose body she discovers at the top. Kayden and Jake--at odds for so long in the previous novels--have joined forces in an attempt to solve the mystery, and their new friendship deepens as the danger escalates. Just when it seems as if the solution is at hand, Pettrey surprises the reader with an unexpected twist, lending an even more sinister tone and making the book impossible to put down until its conclusion. Don't miss this captivating novel!

May the Hodgepodge be with You!

1. It's still May, right? When were you last in the middle of something that might be described as mayhem?

When you're a nurse, things can quickly turn into mayhem - admissions coming in, patients deteriorating. . . .No particular day comes to mind, but there have been a few!

2. When did you last feel dismayed?

When I woke up yesterday morning and the weather was back in the mid-fifties!

3. What's a food combination you like, but other people may find strange?

I always put butter on my graham crackers and make a "sandwich."

4. "It is never too late to be what you might have been." Do you think that's true? Why or why not?

It depends what it is referring to. In terms of character, or spiritual decisions, then yes, there is always a chance for a new start. However, some horses have definitely left the barn, so to speak. The consequences of your early poor decisions may not be able to be changed.

5. US News and World Report listed the best historic destinations in the US as follows-Washington D.C, Philadelphia PA, Williamsburg VA, Charleston SC, Boston MA, Richmnd VA, Savannah, GA, Santa Fe NM, Yellowstone, San Antonio TX, San Francisco CA, New Orleans LA, and Charlottesville VA.

Of those listed how many have you seen in person? Which two sites on the list would you most like to see in person?

I've been to Williamsburg, Charleston, Boston, Richmond, Santa Fe, San Antonio, and New Orleans. Williamsburg is, by far, my favorite. I've always wanted to go to Savannah. Charlottesville would be wonderful, too. I love the historic South! I wouldn't mind seeing San Francisco, either. And D.C., although I'm less eager during this administration than I was during Geoorge W. Bush's.

6. May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. If you had to participate in a single fitness activity for the next half hour, which activity would you choose?

Walking or riding a bike.

7. What did you like best about the city, town, or neighborhood where you grew up?

I love Houston. Lots of options for whatever you want to do.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Apparently we're not the only ones who had a cool snap this week!

Raptor 6

Raptor 6
(The Quiet Professionals)
Ronie Kendig
(Shiloh Run Press)
ISBN: 978-1616260408
May 2014/352 pages/$12.99

Captain Dean Watters keeps his mission and his team in the forefront of his laser-like focus. So when Dean’s mission and team are threatened, his Special Forces training kicks into high gear. Failing to stop hackers from stealing national security secrets from the military’s secure computers and networks isn’t an option. Zahrah Zarrick is a missionary teacher to Afghan children in Mazar-e Sharif. And a target. When Zahrah is captured because of her expertise in quantum cryptology, compromising the US military, Dean is forced to crack the lockbox around his heart—a move that might come at the highest cost.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ronie Kendig is an award-winning, bestselling author who grew up an Army brat. After twenty-plus years of marriage, she and her hunky hero husband have a full life with four children and a Maltese Menace in Northern Virginia. Author and speaker, Ronie loves engaging readers through her Rapid-Fire Fiction. Ronie can be found at www.roniekendig.com, on Facebook, Twitter (@roniekendig), and Goodreads.

MY THOUGHTS

Whew! I don't know how she does it, but Ronie Kendig keeps delivering military thrillers with the precision and focus of the Special Forces who stir up the pages of her trademark Rapid-Fire Fiction. Raptor 6 focuses on Captain Dean Watters, aka RaptorSix, the captain of the elite Raptor team, who Kendig introduced in her A Breed Apart military war dog series. Take a deep breath before you start reading this one, folks, because you likely won't have a chance for another one until the last page is turned! Kendig is a pro at transporting the reader to the scene of the non-stop action, making the sights, smells, and emotions surge off the pages. Gritty suspense, crisp dialogue, and explosive encounters will please the most ardent fan of military fiction, while the thread of romance and the relationships forged and strengthened by life-threatening encounters will attract those readers who never expected to pick up a book with a soldier on the cover. I'm already eager for the second book in this series, Hawk, coming in November!

Chateau of Secrets

Chateau of Secrets
Melanie Dobson
(Howard Books)
ISBN: 978-1476746111
May 2014/400 pages/$14.99

A courageous young noblewoman risks her life to hide French resistance fighters; seventy years later, her granddaughter visits the family’s abandoned chateau and uncovers shocking secrets from the past.

Gisèle Duchant guards a secret that could cost her life. Tunnels snake through the hill under her family’s medieval chateau in Normandy. Now, with Hitler’s army bearing down, her brother and several friends are hiding in the tunnels, resisting the German occupation of France.

But when German soldiers take over the family’s château, Gisèle is forced to host them as well—while harboring the resistance fighters right below their feet. Taking in a Jewish friend’s baby, she convinces the Nazis that it is her child, ultimately risking everything for the future of the child. When the German officers begin to suspect her deception, an unlikely hero rescues both her and the child.

A present day story weaves through the past one as Chloe Sauver, Gisèle’s granddaughter, arrives in Normandy. After calling off her engagement with a political candidate, Chloe pays a visit to the chateau to escape publicity and work with a documentary filmmaker, Riley, who has uncovered a fascinating story about Jews serving in Hitler’s army. Riley wants to research Chloe’s family history and the lives that were saved in the tunnels under their house in Normandy. Chloe is floored—her family isn’t Jewish, for one thing, and she doesn’t know anything about tunnels or the history of the house. But as she begins to explore the dark and winding passageways beneath the chateau, nothing can prepare her for the shock of what she and Riley discover…

With emotion and intrigue, Melanie Dobson brings World War II France to life in this beautiful novel about war, family, sacrifice, and the secrets of the past.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Melanie Dobson is the award-winning author of thirteen historical romance, suspense, and contemporary novels. Two of her novels won Carol Awards in 2011, and Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana won Best Novel of Indiana in 2010. Melanie lives with her husband Jon and two daughters near Portland, Oregon. Visit her online at MelanieDobson.com.

MY THOUGHTS

Melanie Dobson combines historical and contemporary worlds in this intriguing novel that focuses on a French family whose lives were forever altered by the events of World War II. Alternating chapters intermingle the past and present and Dobson parallels each account until she brings them both to their connected resolutions. This book highlights a fascinating and previously unknown-to-me aspect of World War II: that of Jews conscripted to serve in Hitler's army, making the tale that much more riveting and inspiring. Impeccable research and a real-life heroine who inspired the novel add depth and meaning, and I continued reading through all of the author's notes at the end of the book. Folks who are World War II history buffs or who just love a good story will want to put Chateau of Secrets on their TBR lists.

MY THOUGHTS

I am so glad I discovered Lisa Harris's books last year and added her to my list of must-read suspense authors! I was captivated last fall by the first book in this series, Dangerous Passage (reviewed here), and this novel even exceeded that one. Harris wastes no time with superfluous or immaterial scenes before plunging the reader into the emotion and tension of this heart-pounding tale--which could have been ripped from the headlines and is far too authentic to dismiss as implausible fiction. Emily elicits admiration and respect from the opening pages, and that only grows as the scenes unfold and the stakes increase. Mason impresses as well, and one can only hope to have someone like him around in such a situation. Escalating suspense and unforeseen developments make "just one more chapter" a futile objective; be prepared to stay up late with this one! Trading sleep for reading is definitely worth this Fatal Exchange!

Here to Stay
Melissa Tagg

ISBN:
May 2013/

After playing nomad for five years, Blake Hunziker has finally had enough of adventure. Not sure what reception he'll get from everyone back in Whisper Shore, he's stunned at not only a warm welcome from his hometown but also a job offer. The job is his if he can successfully pull off the annual Christmas Festival. If only he knew the first thing about coordinating events...

If there's one thing Autumn Kingsley knows, it's Whisper Shore. For years, she's been stuck running her family's inn when all she wants is to see the world. Now she has a visit scheduled from a potential investor who could take over the inn, as well as a dream job offer in Paris. But with just two weeks to whip the inn into shape, her chance at escape is a long shot.

The Hunzikers and the Kingsleys may not get along, but Blake knows Autumn's the only one who can help him. She agrees to a trade--she'll help with the Festival and he'll help with inn repairs. But what was meant to be a simple deal quickly becomes much more than that when the guy who's done running away joins forces with the girl who can't wait to leave.

MY THOUGHTS

Some authors start strong with a great debut novel and then fizzle with their second book, but Melissa Tagg proves that she is Here to Stay with this charming story! I thoroughly enjoyed Made to Last (reviewed here) and was thrilled to discover that her sophomore release is a spin-off of that first novel. Her fresh, down-to-earth writing style and winsome characters once again immediately pulled me into this delightful book, making me long to visit Whisper Shore and spend a few days at the Kingsley Inn. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a lightweight tale of fluff, however, as Tagg leads Autumn and Blake, as well as their respective families, through some pretty painful and soul-searching moments. A perfect addition to your spring or summer reading list, Here to Stay has secured Melissa Tagg's spot on my list of favorite young authors!

Fair Play

Fair Play
Deeanne Gist
(Howard Books)
ISBN: 978-1451692419
May 2014/464 pages/$15.99

From the bestselling author of It Happened at the Fair comes a historical love story about a lady doctor and a Texas Ranger who meet at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Saddled with a man’s name, Billy Jack Tate makes no apologies for taking on a man’s profession. As a doctor at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, she is one step closer to having her very own medical practice—until Hunter Scott asks her to give it all up to become his wife.

Hunter is one of the elite—a Texas ranger and World’s Fair guard specifically chosen for his height, physique, character, and skill. Hailed as the toughest man west of any place east, he has no patience for big cities and women who think they belong anywhere but home.

Despite their differences of opinion, Hunter and Billie find a growing attraction until Hunter discovers an abandoned baby in the corner of a White City exhibit. He and Billy team up to make sure this foundling isn’t left in the slums of Chicago. As they fight for the underprivileged children in the Nineteenth Ward, an entire playground movement is birthed. But when the fair comes to an end, one of them will have to give up their dream.

Will Billy exchange her doctor’s shingle for the domesticated role of a southern wife, or will Hunter abandon the wide open spaces of home for a life in the “gray city,” a woman who insists on being the wage earner, and a group of ragamuffins who need more than one breathing space?

MY THOUGHTS

I know few authors who can bring history to life like Deeanne Gist. Fair Play is her second book set at the 1893 Chicago World Fair and as much as I've loved her previous books, this one may be my favorite yet, and not just because it has a medical angle and a hero from Texas! Gist is a master at creating extraordinary characters, clever dialogue, engaging plot twists, and poignant situations. I was swept away more than a century into the past and experienced a wide range of emotions as I was caught up in the lives of Dr. Billy Jack Tate and Texas Ranger Hunter Scott, laughing, grieving, and sighing at intervals, Fair Play stands alone and can be read independently from It Happened at the Fair (which I reviewed here), although a few references to occurrences or individuals from the first novel provided a fun connection for those who have read both books. I highly recommend this delightful book and fully expect to see it add to Gist's lengthy list of awards. Put this one on your TBR list!
