MY THOUGHTS

Ann H. Gabhart brings post WW2 Appalachia to life in this engaging and touching novel. As a nurse who has worked in home health, I was fascinated by the portrayal of the historic Frontier Nursing Service and in awe of the courage of those nurse-midwives as they faced the elements, superstitions, and often, downright suspicion in their attempts to provide care to women and their families deep in the Kentucky mountains. As always, Gabhart creates compelling characters that burrowed into my heart. With moments both tough and tender, some that brought a tear and others that made me grin, this poignant novel warmed my heart and kept me up until the last page was complete. A thoroughly satisfying read, These Healing Hills is the perfect fall read. Grab your copy today!

Many Sparrows

Many Sparrows
Lori Benton
(WaterBrook Press)
ISBN: 978-1601429940
August, 2017/400 pages/$15.99

Either she and her children would emerge from that wilderness together, or none of them would. . . .

In 1774, the Ohio-Kentucky frontier pulses with rising tension and brutal conflicts as Colonists push westward and encroach upon Native American territories. The young Inglesby family is making the perilous journey west when an accident sends Philip back to Redstone Fort for help, forcing him to leave his pregnant wife Clare and their four-year old son Jacob on a remote mountain trail.

When Philip does not return and Jacob disappears from the wagon under the cover of darkness, Clare awakens the next morning to find herself utterly alone, in labor and wondering how she can to recover her son . . . especially when her second child is moments away from being born.

Clare will face the greatest fight of her life, as she struggles to reclaim her son from the Shawnee Indians now holding him captive. But with the battle lines sharply drawn, Jacob’s life might not be the only one at stake. When frontiersman Jeremiah Ring comes to her aid, can the stranger convince Clare that recovering her son will require the very thing her anguished heart is unwilling to do—be still, wait and let God fight this battle for them?

MY THOUGHTS

This is the first book I've read by this author but it won't be my last. Lori Benton masterfully portrays the realities of life on the Kentucky frontier in the late eighteenth century and the harrowing and tragic events experienced by both the settlers and the Native American peoples. Meticulously researched and populated with compellingly authentic personalities, Many Sparrows tugs at the heart and triggers a plethora of emotions. This stirrinng tale reminds the reader that conflicts and battles are often impossible to resolve with human effort but require us to simply be still and allow God to work. Don't miss this stunning work of heart.

(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800727123
September 2017/384 pages/$15.99

In an effort to get her security consulting business off the ground, Kelsey Allen has been spending a lot of time up in the air, rappelling down buildings and climbing through windows to show business owners their vulnerabilities to thieves. But when her investigative focus turns from theft to murder, Kelsey knows she's out of her league--and possibly in the cross hairs. When blast-from-the-past Detective Brad Hollister is called in to investigate, Kelsey may find that he's the biggest security threat yet . . . to her heart.

Crackling with romantic tension and laced with intrigue, this suspenseful story from award-winning author Patricia Bradley will keep you guessing--and looking over your shoulder.

MY THOUGHTS

Patricia Bradley once again kept me on the edge of my set with her second Memphis Cold Case novel. Kelsey and Brad garnered my admiration from the opening pages, and I am in awe of their courage and abilities. Bradley paces the story perfectly, with anxious moments and hold-your-breath scenes that made it impossible to find a "stopping place" to set the book aside until the final page was complete. Hints of romance provided a different kind of tension that nevertheless kept my heart pounding. And mercy! Kelsey's daring as she scaled buildings under the cover of darkness was almost as terrifying as the human danger she faced. Bradley was already a favorite of mine, and she gets better with every book. Add this (standalone) novel and series to your fall reading list.

Gathering the Threads

Gathering the Threads
The Amish of Summer Grove, Book 3
Cindy Woodsmall
(Waterbrook)
ISBN: 978-1601427038
September 2017/352 pages/$14.99

Finally back in the Old Order Amish world she loves, will Ariana’s new perspectives draw her family closer together—or completely rip them apart?

After months away in the Englisch world, Ariana Brenneman is overjoyed to be in the Old Order Amish home where she was raised. Yet her excitement is mixed with an unexpected apprehension as she reconciles all she’s learned from her biological parents with the uncompromising teachings of her Plain community. Although her childhood friend, ex-Amish Quill Schlabach, hopes to help her navigate her new role amongst her people, Ariana’s Daed doesn’t understand why his sweet daughter is suddenly questioning his authority. What will happen if she sows seeds of unrest and rebellion in the entire family?

Meanwhile, Skylar Nash has finally found her place among the large Brenneman family, but Ariana’s arrival threatens to unravel Skylar’s new identity—and her sobriety. Both Ariana and Skylar must discover the true cords that bind a family and community together and grasp tight the One who holds their authentic identities close to His heart.

Gathering the Threads is the third and final novel in The Amish of Summer Grove series.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Cindy Woodsmall is the New York Times and CBA best-selling author of nineteen works of fiction and non-fiction with more than a million copies sold. Her connection with the Amish community has been featured in national media outlets such as ABC’s “Nightline,” the Wall Street Journal, and a National Geographic documentary on Amish life. Cindy and her husband reside near the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains.

MY THOUGHTS

Cindy Woodsmall stands in a class all her own when it comes to Amish fiction. This is a compelling series, and I have been eagerly awaiting its conclusion. Gathering the Threads begins with a summary of the previous two books, enabling new readers to jump into this one without being confused. However, those who don't read the earlier books will deprive themselves of a richer experience. Woodsmall once again masterfully portrays the crises of identity and faith that Ariana has experienced as a result of her time draus in da Welt (out in the world) with her birth parents, while Skylar has had an equally challenging time adjusting to Amish life. Honest and realistic, the story neither caricaturizes nor adulates Amish customs or beliefs, but represents well both the positive and negative aspects of this culture as well as the outside world. Thought-provoking and applicable to more than just the Amish system of beliefs, Gathering the Threads is great for book clubs. I highly recommend this book and series.

How Sweet the Sound

How Sweet the Sound
Amy K Sorrells
(Tyndale House Publishers)
ISBN: 978-1496426130
September 2016/384 pages/$15.99

Wealth and etiquette can hide a lot of things in the South, as the esteemed Harlan family of sleepy Bay Spring, Alabama, knows. But behind the gentle facade of white pillared porches and acres of cultivated pecan orchards, family secrets smolder.

Young Anniston Harlan cares little for high society and the rigid rules and expectations of her grandmother, Princella. She finds solace working the orchards alongside her father and grandfather, and relief in the cool waters of Mobile Bay.

Anniston’s aunt, Comfort Harlan, has never quite lived up to the family name, or so her mother Princella’s ever-apparent scowl implies. When she gleefully accepts the proposal of her longtime boyfriend, Solly, a flood tide of tragedy ensues that strips Comfort of her innocence and unleashes generations of family secrets, changing the Harlan family forever.

While Comfort struggles to recover, Anniston discovers an unlikely new friend from the seedy part of town who helps her try to make sense of the chaos. Together, they and the whole town of Bay Spring discover how true love is a risk, but one worth taking.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Amy K. Sorrells is a long-time believer in the power of story to change lives. Her diverse writing career includes more than two decades of freelance writing, including medical journal publications and a popular op-ed newspaper column.

The driving mission behind all her writing is to bring words of hope to a hurting world. Praised by reviewers for the way they both poetically and accurately portray real-life hardship and hope, Amy's novels are inspired by social issues that break her heart and the Bible stories that reflect God's response to those issues. Her first novel, How Sweet the Sound, was a response to her personal questions about how God redeems the pain of sexual abuse. How Sweet the Sound won the 2011 Women of Faith Writing Contest.

Since then, she has published two more novels, Then Sings My Soul and Lead Me Home. Amy's novels have been short-listed for various fiction awards.

In addition to being a writer, Amy is also grateful to be a practicing registered nurse at a busy suburban hospital. She loves doting on her husband, three young-adult sons, and their golden retrievers at their home in central Indiana. If there's leftover time after that, she enjoys up-cycling, gardening, binge reading, exercising, and Bible journaling. Connect with Amy at her website and on Facebook.

MY THOUGHTS

Amy K Sorrells and Tyndale House have teamed up to republish her award-winning debut novel. The sounds of cicadas, porch swings, and ice swirling in sweet tea are practically audible in this tale set in the South, yet its roots go even deeper, to the Biblical story of Tamar. Raw, honest, and emotive, the story is achingly realistic. Readers are privy to the scars hidden within this dysfunctional family as Sorrells smoothly interweaves the various members' voices. Both heartbreaking and hopeful, How Sweet the Sound demonstrates the tragic consequences of unchecked generational sin while at the same time reminding the reader that God redeems and restores. Highly recommended.

(Bethany House Publishers)
ISBN: 9780764218279
September 2017/384 pages/$14.99

Griffith, Duke of Riverton, likes order, logic, and control, so he naturally applies this rational approach to his search for a bride. While he's certain Miss Frederica St. Claire is the perfect wife for him, she is strangely elusive, and he can't seem to stop running into her stunningly beautiful cousin, Miss Isabella Breckenridge.

Isabella should be enjoying her society debut, but with her family in difficult circumstances, she has no choice but to agree to a bargain that puts her at odds with all her romantic hopes--as well as her conscience. And the more she comes to know Griffith, the more she regrets the unpleasant obligation that prevents her from any dream of a future with him.

As all Griffith's and Isabella's long-held expectations are shaken to the core, can they set aside their pride and fear long enough to claim a happily-ever-after?

MY THOUGHTS

Oh, my! I have loved every one of the books in this series since I stumbled across the first one (which was also Kristi Ann Hunter's debut novel), and An Inconvenient Beauty brings it to a perfect, albeit bittersweet close. I will miss the wonderful characters that made this novel such a delight. Hunter infuses this tale with perfectly-balanced scenes brimming with tension, romance, and even humor. I experienced the full range of emotions as I read, and I was torn between wanting to quickly reach the happy ending and being tempted to slowly savor each moment. If you love Regency romance, this a must-read. And if you don't, this will win you over! As much as I hate to bid farewell to the members of Hawthorne House, I am already eager to learn what Hunter's next series will be.

Rule of Law

Rule of Law
Randy Singer
(Tyndale House)
ISBN: 978-1-4964-1816-6
September 2017/480 pages/$16.00

What did the president know? And when did she know it?

For the members of SEAL Team Six, it was a rare mission ordered by the president, monitored in real time from the Situation Room. The Houthi rebels in Yemen had captured an American journalist and a member of the Saudi royal family. Their executions were scheduled for Easter Sunday. The SEAL team would break them out.

But when the mission results in spectacular failure, the finger-pointing goes all the way to the top.

Did the president play political games with the lives of U.S. service members?

Paige Chambers, a determined young lawyer, has a very personal reason for wanting to know the answer. The case she files will polarize the nation and test the resiliency of the Constitution. The stakes are huge, the alliances shaky, and she will be left to wonder if the saying on the Supreme Court building still holds true.

Equal justice under law.

It makes a nice motto. But will it work when one of the most powerful people on the planet is also a defendant?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Randy Singer is a critically acclaimed author and veteran trial attorney. He has penned more than ten legal thrillers, including his award-winning debut novel Directed Verdict. He also teaches classes in advocacy and ethics at Regent Law School and serves on the school’s Board of Visitors. Find out more about Randy at http://www.randysinger.net.

MY THOUGHTS

I am finally catching my breath again after reading this incredibly captivating legal thriller. Beginning with the action-packed opening sentences of the book that swept me into SEAL Team Six's mission, and continuing throughout each fascinating chapter, I was gripped by this story. Singer knocks this one out of the park as he expertly weaves together military intelligence, political machinations, and legal issues into a tale that, though fiction, is far too real for comfort. Crisply written scenes and credible personalities bring the pages to life, and I often felt as if I were watching real events play out as I read. Simultaneously mesmerizing, entertaining, educational (I especially loved the glimpse into the workings of the Supreme Court!), and thought-provoking, Rule of Law is impossible to put down until the final page is turned. Even if you don't normally read books in this genre, I predict you will find yourself riveted to the pages of this exceptional novel. Don't miss it!

MY THOUGHTS

I've enjoyed reading and reviewing Rachel Dylan's previous novels, and I am delighted she is starting this legal series. Deadly Proof is a fascinating legal suspense. As a nurse, the Big Pharma case targeting a drug and its side effects piqued my interest, but the legal wranglings and the court battle, along with the escalating suspense made me keep reading "just one more chapter" until I reached the end. Dylan's legal background adds depth to the story and characters, and the interplay between the various attorneys as well as with/among the pharmaceutical "suits" was believable - and sometimes rather disgusting! Plenty of twists and turns ratcheted up the tension. Add this book to your fall reading series and be watching for more from this talented author!

Crown of Souls: Q&A with Ronie Kendig

Yesterday I shared my review of Crown of Souls, Ronie Kendig's brand new release and book 2 in her series The Tox Files. Today I am pleased to share the following chat with you provided by Ronie and Bethany House. I love this peek into the background of this thrilling suspense!

1. In The Tox Files, you write in a slightly different vein while maintaining your RapidFire Fiction brand of writing and the paramilitary element. What coerced you into writing archaeological threads in your stories?

After writing a dozen paramilitary novels, I was looking to do something new, to shake up my “complacency” and rediscover my love of writing. Don’t get me wrong—I’ve always LOVED writing, but I like to do new things, so when I was doing some creative mulling (otherwise known as Facebook trolling), an author I follow posted a picture of an ancient site and said it was located in the oldest, most continually inhabited city, then asked readers to find out where it was. That hooked me! I was game—procrastinating, I mean, percolating my story—so I dove into the hunt. Which invariably led me to Aleppo… and the Aleppo Codex. And as they say, the rest is history.

2. Crown of Souls received a Top Pick from RT Reviews, and in their blurb they mention the extensive research done for this series. How have you done this research?

Over the past three years, I have had so much fun delving deep into history and learning about other cultures—which is one of the greatest ironies of life, since as a kid in high school, I hated history (and math, but let’s not linger on negative experiences). It has been so fascinating to read about how one event or general impacted a country and other countries. I’ve had the great benefit of meeting a real Doctor Cathey, who has multiple PhDs, has led digs in Israel, and is not only a great intellect, but he’s got some mad-crazy creative skills, too. I’ve had so much fun with this series and exploring the past and its impact on our future.

3. How did you come up with the title of the novel and its artifact?

I wish I could claim credit for Crown of Souls, but in researching and talking to the real Dr. Cathey, he read a passage from some ancient writing that could, essentially, be translated “crown of souls,” and there birthed the title and its artifact.

4. The Tox Files is named after the main character, Tox. How did you come up with that?

There are people in our lives who are truly toxic and challenge us, but I thought—what if that was actually a character’s name? How would that drive the story and the plot? Not to mention, it just plain sounds cool.

5. The quote by Nietzsche is a theme of Crown of Souls. What made you choose this?

The full quote—“He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”—seemed like such a perfect segue into the development of Tox’s character. He has long believed he’s toxic, so it was a natural progression for him to examine the “monster” within himself.

* * * * *

Thanks so much to Bethany House and Ronie Kendig for this fascinating Q&A! Don't miss this compelling novel!

MY THOUGHTS

Whew! Ronie Kendig is in a class all her own when it comes to fast-paced military suspense. She raises her own bar with each release, and Crown of Souls is even more inTOXicating than the first book in this series. High stakes, non-stop action, and adrenaline-laced scenes fill the pages. Kendig heightens the intensity with expertly crafted characters, deepening the story and tugging at the emotions. As with other books in this series, a race against time to find an ancient artifact adds a unique twist and ratchets up the danger and tension. Be prepared to stay up long past your bedtime with this compelling story, but the loss of sleep is oh so worth it! Crown of Souls is a must read!
