Anchor in the Storm

Anchor in the Storm
Waves of Freedom (Book 2)
Sarah Sundin
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800723439
May 2016/400 pages/$14.99

One plucky female pharmacist + one high-society naval officer = romance—and danger

For plucky Lillian Avery, America’s entry into World War II means a chance to prove herself as a pharmacist in Boston. The challenges of her new job energize her. But society boy Ensign Archer Vandenberg’s attentions only annoy–even if he is her brother’s best friend.

During the darkest days of the war, Arch’s destroyer hunts German U-boats in vain as the submarines sink dozens of merchant ships along the East Coast. Still shaken by battles at sea, Arch notices his men also struggle with their nerves–and with drowsiness. Could there be a link to the large prescriptions for sedatives Lillian has filled? The two work together to answer that question, but can Arch ever earn Lillian’s trust and affection?

Sarah Sundin brings World War II to life, offering readers an intense experience they won’t soon forget.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sarah Sundin is the author of eight historical novels, including Anchor in the Storm. Her novel Through Waters Deep was named to Booklist’s “101 Best Romance Novels of the Last 10 Years,” and her novella "I’ll Be Home for Christmas” in Where Treetops Glisten was a finalist for the 2015 Carol Award. A mother of three, Sarah lives in California, works on-call as a hospital pharmacist, and teaches Sunday school. Find out more about Sarah at http://www.sarahsundin.com/.

MY THOUGHTS

I love Sarah Sundin's World War II novels, and this is one of her best. The second in her Waves of Freedom series, Anchor in the Storm reads well as a stand-alone, although those who read Through Waters Deep will enjoy seeing Jim and Mary frequently throughout this book. While I always pictured World War II as "over there" (as the title of George M Cohan's song, popular in both world wars, declares!), Sundin accurately depicts the presence of German U-boats in the Atlantic near the eastern seaboard and our sailors' heroic efforts to keep the war from U.S. soil. The personal struggles they endured as a result of the horrors of war are also presented. As always, Sundin's characters are authentic, complex, and perfectly portrayed for the time period. I cheered for Lillian as she sought to overcome multiple obstacles as a woman and as someone whose physical challenge was harshly judged by almost everyone she encountered, as well as for Arch, who is fighting his own demons from previous wrong choices in addition to his own emotional scars from war. Struggles with their faith are realistically portrayed. Mystery and danger escalate as Arch and Lillian investigate the prescription drug ring. As for romance, it is much deeper than starry eyes in the moonlight! Compelling and satisfying, Anchor in the Storm is a must for your summer reading list.

The Beautiful Pretender

The Beautiful Pretender
A Medieval Fairy Tale
Melanie Dickerson
(Thomas Nelson)
ISBN: 978-0718026288
May 2016/320 pages/$15.99

What happens when a margrave realizes he’s fallen in love with a servant?

The Margrave of Thornbeck has to find a bride, fast. He invites ten noble-born ladies from around the country to be his guests at Thornbeck Castle for two weeks, a time to test these ladies and reveal their true character.

Avelina is only responsible for two things: making sure her deception goes undetected and avoiding being selected as the margrave’s bride. Since the latter seems unlikely, she concentrates on not getting caught. No one must know she is merely a maidservant, sent by the Earl of Plimmwald to stand in for his daughter, Dorothea.

Despite Avelina’s best attempts at diverting attention from herself, the margrave has taken notice. And try as she might, she can’t deny her own growing feelings. But something else is afoot in the castle. Something sinister that could have far worse—far deadlier—consequences. Will Avelina be able to stop the evil plot? And at what cost?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Melanie Dickerson is the author of The Healer’s Apprentice, a Christy Award finalist and winner of the National Reader’s Choice Award for Best First Book. Melanie earned a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alabama and has been a teacher and a missionary. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Huntsville, Alabama. Find out more about Melanie at http://www.melaniedickerson.com.

MY THOUGHTS

I somewhat "accidentally" signed up to review this book, as neither the medieval time period nor fairy tales rank in my favorites, but I'm rethinking that stance, at least if Melanie Dickerson is the author. What an enchanting story! Dickerson swept me away to the world of nobility, class distinction, and advantageous marriages. Avelina's circumstances and her loyalty to her family tugged at my heart, and I was inspired by her strength, kindness, and positive attitude. The tale thrums with romantic tension as Avelina desperately attempts to avoid the margrave's attentions and he seeks to know her better. Threads of danger and intrigue add depth, and I was caught in the conundrum of wanting to read faster to reach the resolution while yet wanting to savor every chapter. Don't miss this fabulous novel!

Through the Shadows

Through the Shadows
The Golden Gate Chronicles, Book 3
Karen Barnett
(Abingdon Press)
ISBN: 978-1426781452
May 2016/320 pages/$14.99

As San Francisco rises from the ashes, an age-old battle looms between corruption and the promise of new beginnings.

The devastating earthquake is just two years past, but the city of San Francisco is still trying to recover. Destruction of this magnitude is not so easy to overcome-and neither are the past regrets shadowing Elizabeth King’s hopeful future.

Hoping to right her wrongs, Elizabeth dedicates herself to helping girls rescued from slavery in Chinatown brothels, even if it means putting her own life at risk to sneak through the gloomy alleys and rooftops where dangers lurk.

Putting her life on the line for a worthy cause is admirable. But opening her heart is even more terrifying. So when Elizabeth meets attorney, Charles McKinley—a man who dreams of reforming San Francisco’s crooked politics—Elizabeth begins to doubt: Can she maintain her pretense and hide her past? Or will her secret jeopardize both their futures?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Karen Barnett is the author of Beyond the Ashes, Out of the Ruins, and Mistaken. Named the 2013 Writer of Promise by Oregon Christian Writers, Karen lives in Albany, Oregon, with her husband and two kids. When she’s not writing novels, she loves speaking at women’s events, libraries, and book clubs. Find out more about Karen at http://karenbarnettbooks.com.

MY THOUGHTS
I had not read the first two books in this series; in fact, I was not familiar with this author when I received the invitation to review this novel, but the premise was intriguing and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to read it. I'm so glad I did! The story works well as a stand-alone, although I now want to go back and read Out of the Ruins and Beyond the Ashes. Karen Barnett has crafted a rich historical romance rife with depth and meaning. Although the novel takes place more than a century ago, its issues of human trafficking and political corruption sadly remain far too familiar in today's contemporary world. Pulsating with heart-wrenching emotion and danger, yet with threads of hope and love woven throughout, Through the Shadows tugs at the heart. Don't miss this engrossing and thoroughly satisfying novel.

Murder Comes by Mail

Murder Comes by Mail
A Hidden Springs Mystery
A. H. Gabhart
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800727055
May 2016/352 pages/$13.99

Doing a good deed never felt so bad

Deputy Sheriff Michael Keane doesn't particularly enjoy being touted as the hero of Hidden Springs after pulling a suicidal man back from the edge of the Eagle River bridge in front of dozens of witnesses--a few of whom caught the breathtaking moments with their cameras. But the media hype doesn't last long as a new story pushes its way into the public consciousness of Hidden Springs' concerned citizens.

Photos of a dead girl arrive in the mail, and Michael becomes convinced she was murdered by the man he saved. With a killer one step ahead, things in Hidden Springs begin to unravel. Now Michael must protect the people he loves--because the killer could be targeting one of them next.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A. H. Gabhart is the author of Murder Comes by Mail and Murder at the Courthouse. As Ann H. Gabhart, she is the bestselling author of many novels, including Angel Sister, Small Town Girl, and Love Comes Home, and several popular Shaker novels such as The Outsider, The Believer, and The Innocent. Ann grew up in a small rural town in Kentucky much like Hidden Springs. She and her husband still live on a farm near that same Kentucky town. Learn more at www.annhgabhart.com.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved the first cozy mystery in this series, Murder at the Courthouse and this one is even better. Murder Comes by Mail teems with hold-your-breath suspense and is impossible to put down. Hidden Springs is a charming town with a bevy of delightful and somewhat eccentric characters, and their interactions ring true to their personalities. I particularly enjoyed Gabhart's portrayal of Michael and his interactions with Detective Whitt from neighboring Eagleton, as Michael held his ground against Whitt's derision and animosity. A. H. Gabhart has created a compelling story that kept me up far too late--and then kept me awake as I listened for creaks and distant footfalls! Read it with the lights on, but don't miss this gripping novel!

Every Bride Has Her Day

Every Bride Has Her Day
A Brides with Style Novel, #3
Janice Thompson
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800724016
May 2016/352 pages/$13.99

Katie's determined to make it down the aisle this time--but it may be easier said than done

Beyond that, it seems everyone around her has an opinion--and a strong one at that--on what Katie's special day should look like. Will she ever manage to settle all of the details for her storybook wedding? Or will her overzealous friends and relations make a mess of everything?

Read an excerpt.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Janice Thompson is a seasoned romance author and screenwriter. An expert at pulling the humor from the situations we get ourselves into, Thompson offers an inside look at the wedding business, drawing on her own experiences as a wedding planner. She is the author of the hugely popular Weddings by Bella series and the Backstage Pass series, as well as Picture Perfect, The Icing on the Cake, and The Dream Dress. She lives in Texas. Learn more at www.janiceathompson.com.

MY THOUGHTS

Janice Thompson is my go-to author when I need a book guaranteed to make me smile. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and Every Bride Has Her Day is a delightful finale brimming with all things bridal and romantic. Amidst the satin and lace, Thompson skillfully portrays the tension and conflict that can arise during the planning of the Big Day when too many opinions wreak havoc on a bride's peace of mind as well as her relationships with friends and family. The depiction of the pain experienced by the perpetually single friend who is "always a bridesmaid" evokes sympathy and adds authenticity. Once again, the setting varies between Dallas and Katie's hometown of Fairfield, Texas, and the juxtaposition of metropolitan elegance and small-town charm creates multiple opportunities for humor as well as misunderstandings, and the pages turn as rapidly as the miles fly by on the interstate between the two locations. Every Bride Has Her Day is the the perfect read for the summer wedding season; add it--as well as the two previous books in the series--to your reading list today!

Someone Like You

Someone Like You
Victoria Bylin
(Bethany House Publishers)
ISBN: 978-0764217371
May 2016/352 pages/$13.99

Single mom Julia Dare has a lot on her plate.

A brand new Christian, Julia is busy trying to run her own business, spend time with her widowed mother, and raise her young son, Max, despite his father’s less-than-ideal influence on him. When a big account from her event-planning business sends her to the Caliente Springs resort, she’s shocked to come face-to-face with Zeke Monroe, the resort’s general manager and her college sweetheart.

With his faith in tatters, Zeke Monroe is determined to keep the historic Caliente Springs resort running despite financial difficulties. But when Julia walks back into his life, he can’t ignore the feelings she stirs up. As they work together on an important client’s dream wedding, the fate of the resort soon depends on their success. When Zeke and Julia are pushed to their limits both personally and professionally, will their history put up walls between them or bring them together?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Victoria Bylin writes contemporary and historical romances known for their realistic, relatable characters. Her work has finaled in contests such as the Carol Awards, the RITAs, and the RT Reviewers’ Choice Award. A native of California, she and her husband now make their home in Lexington, Kentucky. Find out more about Victoria at http://www.victoriabylin.com.

MY THOUGHTS

I enjoyed a previous book by this author and this is a pleasant read as well. Bylin creates compelling characters who tug at the emotions. In the case of Julia and Zeke, that is a good thing. I particularly liked her portrayal of Julia has she endeavors to be consistent in her new faith and make better choices for herself and Max. Zeke is a worthy hero, determined to preserve the resort and the jobs it provides. Hunter, however, is a "piece of work," as they say, and got on my last nerves, basically behaving as a jerk at every turn. But then, the mark of a good author is being able to create all sorts of personalities, and life is full of such self-absorbed brutes! Humorous moments combine with romantic tension, resulting in a lively and entertaining story. Add Someone Like You to your spring or summer reading list!

God Gave Me You

God Gave Me You:
A True Story of Love, Loss and a Heaven-Sent Miracle

Tricia Seaman & Diane Nichols
(Howard Books)
ISBN:
May 2016/256 pages/Hardcover/$16.81 (Amazon price)

When a single mother with terminal cancer asks an oncology nurse to look after her son, neither can imagine what God has in store. This is the heartwarming story of how two very different women with two very different paths were brought together for one very special purpose.

Oncology nurse Tricia Seaman and her family were hoping to adopt a son. They were months into the grueling process when she met Trish Somers, a terminally ill cancer patient. Trish was a single mother and her eight-year-old son Wesley was her entire world. As the young mother poured out her fears and emotions, it became clear that this was unlike any other nurse-patient relationship Tricia had in her career. When they learned that the cancer had spread and Trish only had a short time to live, she looked at Tricia, a complete stranger three weeks ago, and asked if she could raise Wesley when she passed away.

God Gave Me You tells the true story of how these two incredible mothers met, the immediate bond they formed, and the ups and downs of joining families as Trish’s earthly life ebbed away. This heartwarming tale inspires readers to find the courage to trust in faith and never give up. The miracle of these two families coming together demonstrates that family isn’t always blood; often, it’s made up of the people God gives you if you have a willing heart. God Gave Me You is a story you can turn to again and again when you’re looking for hope, inspiration, and a reason to believe in miracles.

Read an excerpt.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Tricia Seaman is a wife, mother and a hospital nurse with twenty years of experience. She and her husband and five children live in rural central Pennsylvania where she was born and raised. She currently works for PinnacleHealth System in Harrisburg for the inpatient oncology unit.

Diane Nichols writes for numerous national print and online publications. She is also a single mother to two beautiful daughters and lives in Florida.

MY THOUGHTS

I primarily review Christian fiction but as a nurse, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to read and review this book. What an inspiring and encouraging testimony of how God moved in the lives and circumstances of two women whose paths intersected on a seemingly random night that would prove to be anything but random. Honest and raw, this story doesn't shy away from the heartbreak of Trish's illness and prognosis, nor does it imply that the transitions were smooth and trouble-free. The focus of the book, however is God's grace and provision, and the strength he provides in the midst of life's seemingly-impossible storms. A relatively quick read, this book will touch your heart with its message of faith and hope.

The Quieting

The Quieting
(The Bishop's Family, Book 2)
Suzanne Woods Fisher
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800723217
May 2016/352 pages/$14.99

It was a well-laid plan--but it wasn't her plan . . .

It's all her grandmother's fault. For the last few months, Abigail Stoltzfus has helped her father with his genealogical research, hoping that breaking through a client's brick wall would also break his melancholy. But now her intrusive grandmother has set her sights on marrying off Abigail and insists she come to Stoney Ridge, where there is a plethora of eligible bachelors.

Except that Mammi is mistaken. There are no eligible bachelors in Stoney Ridge, barring one, and he's all wrong. Dane Glick has the wrong last name and the wrong relatives--including the bishop who is at odds over a church matter with Abigail's uncle, minister David Stoltzfus.

As the conflict grows, setting family against family, it's becoming clear that the path to a solution may lead to a Quieting--a removal of a church leader. But for which one? And when Abigail stumbles onto a curious connection during her genealogical research, it could help David solve one problem--but will it create another?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Suzanne Woods Fisher is an award-winning, bestselling author whose most recent novels include The Imposter, Anna's Crossing, and The Inn at Eagle Hill series, as well as nonfiction books about the Amish, including Amish Peace and The Heart of the Amish. She lives in California. Learn more at suzannewoodsfisher.com and follow Suzanne on Facebook and Twitter.

MY THOUGHTS

I don't read many Amish novels, but I never miss one by Suzanne Woods Fisher. The Quieting addresses a topic I was not familiar with: the rare instance when an Amish church leader must be removed from his position, a heart-wrenching, delicate--albeit fascinating--occurrence. While this is a major story thread, it is by no means the only one, and Fisher skillfully weaves it into the fabric of the other events of the story. I appreciate her realistic portrayal of the Amish as they face many of the same issues as Englisch believers. The family interactions-and disputes!-ring true, as does the inner conflict that David experiences as he seeks a solution to the dilemma about the bishop. As a detail person, however, my hands-down favorite character is Abigail. Bless her heart! She is so well-meaning yet so oblivious as she inundates folks with more than they ever wanted to know about any subject. While this is the second book (which works well as a stand-alone) in The Bishop's Family series, its Stoney Ridge setting is also home to Fisher's two previous series, and many of the peripheral characters are delightfully familiar. (There's even a brief mention of the vexatious Jimmy Fisher!) Kudos to Fisher for a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Don't miss The Quieting!

Silence in the Dark

Silence in the Dark
(Logan Point #4)
Patricia Bradley
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800724184
May 2016/352 pages/$14.99

Bailey Adams is running for her life . . . again.

When Bailey Adams left Logan Point two years ago she thought she was getting away from her problems. Running into her ex-fiancé Danny Maxwell was not part of the plan--neither was being chased through the city by the local drug cartel, the Calatrava. Now despite her best efforts, Danny is her only chance of escaping the people chasing her and getting back to Logan Point safely. Can Bailey find the strength to face what's coming? And in the midst of the chaos, can she keep herself from falling in love with her rescuer all over again?

With lean, fast-paced prose that will keep you turning the pages, Patricia Bradley pens a superb story of suspense and second chances.

MY THOUGHTS

Patricia Bradley wraps up her Logan Point series with another gripping tale. Silence in the Dark captivated me with its heart-wrenching prologue and didn't let go until the final sentence. Bailey is easy to like and empathize with, especially with the danger and turmoil she endures! My heart pounded as she and Danny desperately tried to escape the Calatrava and make it back to Logan Point, only to discover she still wasn't safe on this side of the border. Non-stop action, a plethora of characters who may or may not be trustworthy, complex relationships, and high stake outcomes demand more than just a cursory read of this novel, but it is time well-spent. Like the previous books in this series, Silence in the Dark stands alone but some characters overlap due to the setting of a common town. A great addition to your reading list!
