A Borrowed Dream

A Borrowed Dream
(Cimarron Creek Trilogy, Book 2)
Amanda Cabot
Revell
ISBN: 978-0800727574
March 2018/352 pages/$15.99

There is no such thing as an impossible dream . . .

Catherine Whitfield is sure that she will never again be able to trust anyone in the medical profession after the local doctor's treatments killed her mother. Despite her loneliness and her broken heart, she carries bravely on as Cimarron Creek's dutiful schoolteacher, resigned to a life where dreams rarely come true.

Austin Goddard is a newcomer to Cimarron Creek. Posing as a rancher, he fled to Texas to protect his daughter from a dangerous criminal. He's managed to keep his past as a surgeon a secret. But when Catherine Whitfield captures his heart, he wonders how long he will be able to keep up the charade.

With a deft hand, Amanda Cabot teases out the strands of love, deception, and redemption in this charming tale of dreams deferred and hopes becoming reality.

MY THOUGHTS

Nothing beats a historical romance set in Texas--except maybe one with a medical twist! While I enjoyed Amanda Cabot's series opener, A Stolen Heart, this new release is her best yet, and I couldn't put it down. Easily read as a standalone, A Borrowed Dream focuses on Catherine and Austin's story, yet their circle of friends-not to mention the town at large-includes individuals from the previous novel, providing a richer experience for readers of both works. Cabot provides a fascinating glimpse of the extremes of medicine in the waning nineteenth century, from leeches and purgatives to the cutting edge (no pun intended!) of plastic surgery within the framework of this multi-faceted tale. Heart-wrenching incidents intersperse with sigh-worthy encounters as evil lurks. A roller-coaster of emotions enveloped me as I read, and the climax took my breath away. Don't miss A Borrowed Dream, a must for your spring reading list!

ISBN: 9780800727567
March 2017/352 pages/$15.99

The future she dreamed of is gone. But perhaps a better one awaits . . .
From afar, Cimarron Creek seems like an idyllic town tucked in the Texas Hill Country. But when former schoolteacher Lydia Crawford steps onto its dusty streets in 1880, she finds a town with a deep-seated resentment of Northerners--like her. Lydia won't let that get her down, though. All will be well when she's reunited with her fiancé.

But when she discovers he has disappeared--and that he left behind a pregnant wife--Lydia is at a loss about what to do next. The handsome sheriff urges her to trust him, but can she trust anyone in this town where secrets are as prevalent as bluebonnets in spring?

Bestselling author Amanda Cabot invites you into Texas's storied past to experience adventure, mystery--and love.

MY THOUGHTS

Amanda Cabaot kicks off her new series with another charming Texas tale. Stories of the women who journeyed to the untamed West to settle it with their men absolutely fascinate me. While this isn't the story of a mail-order bride, the surprise awaiting Lydia at the end of her journey is just as unsettling, considering the limited options that women had in those days! Cabot creates a wonderful story, pairing Lydia's spunk with the formidable Aunt Bertha. Plenty of tense-and humorous!-moments pepper the pages of this thoroughly enjoyable novel. I'm already looking forward to the next one in the series. Don't miss A Stolen Heart!

MY THOUGHTS

I have really enjoyed this series, and not just because it's set in Texas! This final book may be my favorite. While it can be read as a standalone, reading the first two books provides a richer experience since characters and backstory are referenced in this book. Amanda Cabot once again creates likable characters struggling with realistic issues and places them in an unlikely setting to come to terms with their situations. Cabot weaves together multiple story threads which keep the tale from dragging and further engages the reader in the lives of the characters. While the spiritual content is strong, it is neither preachy nor forced but a a natural aspect of the characters and their lives. Don't miss Lone Star Trail, and be sure to read the entire series as well!

MY THOUGHTS

I enjoy Amanda Cabot's historical romances and couldn't resist reading her contemporary series set in Texas! While I enjoyed the first novel At Bluebonnet Lake, this one is even better. Marisa and Blake are likable characters and readers will identify with their plights, especially Marisa's. Additionally, the secondary story involving Marisa's best friend, Lauren, and Lauren's daughter, Fiona, immediately grabbed my heart. Fresh starts, forgiveness, and healing add depth to this heart-warming story. Take a trip to the Texas Hill Country with this tale that's perfect for a summer evening.

MY THOUGHTS

I've enjoyed many of Amanda Cabot's historical romances so I eagerly agreed to review her new contemporary novel, especially since it is set in the Texas Hill Country. Although she lives in Wyoming, Cabot has captured the essence of one of the prettiest areas of the Lone Star State in this story, even though Rainbow's End itself is less than charming. Kate and Greg are believable characters as they are likable as well as flawed. And Kate's spunky grandmother made me grin! Reading this novel brought back memories of the times my husband and I have escaped to the Hill Country for a little respite and reminded me it's been too long. Don't miss this delightful story!
