Christmas at the Red Door Inn

Christmas at the Red Door Inn:
A Prince Edward Island Dreams Novella

Liz Johnson
Amazon Digital Services
November 2018/234 pages/64 kb/$0.99

One blizzard. Two friends. Three days to fall in love.

Lifelong islander Brooke Kane doesn’t know what to do with her college degree, her dreams, or her future, but she knows better than to venture far from home when there’s a storm brewing. But a promise to check on Rose’s Red Door Inn prompts Brooke to venture out. By the time she arrives at the inn, the snow is knee-deep and visibility almost non-existent. She settles in to spend a few days alone at the inn until a familiar figure appears at the door.

Pastor Chuck O’Flannigan has never felt like a bigger fool. So focused on his recent decision to leave Prince Edward Island, he’s caught unaware by the blizzard while on a walk. He can only see the inn’s red door, a promise of safety. But when he discovers that Brooke—the only woman who could tempt him to stay on the island—is also taking refuge there, he knows he’s in trouble.

With Christmas only three days away, Brooke is determined that they’ll celebrate—even if it’s just the two of them. Happy to play Scrooge to her Tiny Tim, Chuck wiles away his hours dreaming of a return to Ireland—praying that God may have plans for him there. After all, God seems to have forgotten him in North Rustico. But as Brooke brings Christmas to life, her joy makes him wonder if God may not have forgotten him. In fact, God may have big plans for both of them—if they can only survive Christmas at the Red Door Inn.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved Liz Johnson's Prince Edward Island Dreams series, so when I heard she had written a Christmas novella for this series, I made a beeline to Amazon to purchase it. What a great read at a great price! This is one to read under a blanket, as the blizzard made this Texas-born girl shiver! However, the gentle heat of the romance between Brooke and Chuck warmed my heart if not my toes! While the ending is a foregone conclusion, Johnson paves the road to happily-ever-after with moments that are at times humorous, as well as tender and believable. Chuck's discouragement reminds the reader that those in full-time Christian ministry can and do experience the same questions as the rest of us. This delightful novella is perfect for a quick read at this busy time of year, and a great reminder to add the rest of this series to your Christmas list.

The Christmas Heirloom

The Christmas Heirloom:
Four Holiday Novellas of
Love Through the Generations

Karen Witemeyer, Kristi Ann Hunter
Sarah Loudin Thomas, Becky Wade
(Bethany House Publishers)
ISBN: 978-0764230783
October 2018/384 pages/$15.99

Four Festive and Heartwarming Romance Novellas That Celebrate the Magic of Christmas

Perfect for the Christmas season, four beloved authors bring their bestselling, award-winning talents to a multigenerational collection of romantic holiday novellas. In stories ranging from 1820s Regency England to present-day Washington state, readers will be treated to Christmas tales of an heirloom brooch passed from mother to daughter for almost two hundred years. Will the family legend claiming the brooch brings love to its recipient hold true for these women separated by the years but bonded together by the ties of family?

In Kristi Ann Hunter's Legacy of Love, Sarah Gooding never suspected returning a brooch to an elderly woman would lead to a job . . . and introduce her to the woman's grandson. While he may be far above her station, she can't help but notice that his desire to make this Christmas special for his grandmother matches her own.

In Karen Witemeyer's Gift of the Heart, widow Ruth Fulbright uses the family brooch as collateral for a loan from a wealthy resort owner. But the more she comes to know the man behind the stern businessman, the more she hopes for a second chance at love as the holidays draw near.

In Sarah Loudin Thomas's A Shot at Love, Fleeta Brady's rough-and-tumble childhood means she prefers hunting to more feminine activities. She never expected her mother's brooch might be how a fellow hunter turns her attention from competition to romance one December.

In Becky Wade's Because of You, Maddie Winslow has spent years in love with a man whose heart was already spoken for. When a church Christmas project brings them together and she stumbles upon an old family brooch, might it finally be her turn for love?

MY THOUGHTS

The annual release of Christmas novellas is one of my favorite things about fall, and this collection warmed my heart. I love it when favorite authors collaborate and write stories that are somewhat connected, and I couldn't set aside The Christmas Heirloom once I started. Each novella could stand alone as they span different settings and time periods, from 1827 England to the contemporary USA, yet they are connected by an heirloom brooch handed down through the generations. The opening paragraphs of Kristi Ann Hunter's Legacy of Love drew me in and I read straight through the first three stories, only reluctantly stopping to get enough sleep to ensure I could function the next morning. Endearing characters and perfectly paced, stirring romances make these tales sparkle as brightly as the brooch that connects them. Add this delightful collection to your must-read list for fall!

The Colors of Christmas

The Colors of Christmas
Two Contemporary Stories Celebrate
the Hope of Christmas
Olivia Newport
(Shiloh Run Press)
ISBN: 978-1683223351
October 2017/320 pages/$14.99

Celebrate the joyful hope of the Christmas season as characters find healing in the midst of heartbreak.

Christmas in Gold
After eighty years, change is nothing new for Astrid. By the time she was twenty, she survived the destructive Nazi regime, caring for her family under brutal circumstances, moving to America, and losing her husband. At forty she was widowed again and left to build a new life with her children. Now, when she faces a move into an assisted living community and meets a young woman on the brink of despair, she resolves to stir up hope through tragedy one more time.

Christmas in Blue
In the wake of a personal loss deeper than anyone realizes, Angela plans to bypass as much of the season as possible and get through her duties as the church organist by going on autopilot. Instead, she finds herself in charge of the town’s celebration. After a mysterious young man arrives, townspeople suspect he is the reason that one set of plans after another disintegrate until little is left of their traditions. Yet Angela warms to Gabe because she suspects they share a secret—his real reason for coming to town. Even when all they have to work with is a garish supply of blue Christmas decorations, Gabe helps Angela discover the hidden beauty of hope.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Olivia Newport's novels twist through time to find where faith and passions meet. She chases joy in Colorado, where daylilies grow as tall as she is. Her husband and two twenty-something-year-old children provide welcome distraction from the people stomping through her head on their way into her books.

MY THOUGHTS

I love Christmas novellas and eagerly accepted the opportunity to review this combo. The first offering, Christmas in Gold was my favorite. As a nurse who cares for senior citizens, I loved Olivia Newport's portrayal of Astrid and her family as they dealt with a situation so common today. Newport perfectly depicts the emotions and family dynamics that often accompany such a transition. The situation with Astrid's therapist adds intrigue and supsense, and Newport does a fine job of paceing both the danger and the interpersonal relationships. The second novella Christmas in Blue was less satisfying. While I liked the premise, the story dragged a bit and the mounting disasters were a bit much. The resolution and message conveyed were fine but I was a bit tired from all the upheaval by the time I finally reached them. Overall, this is an enjoyable combo set, with Christmas in Golde the stronger of the two. Check it out for yourself!

Christmas at Carnton Introduces a New Series!

Christmas at Carnton
A Novella
Tamera Alexander
(Thomas Nelson)
ISBN: 978-0310293248
October 2017/256 pages/$12.99

A Christmas novella to launch a brand new three-book series . . . The Carnton Novels

Amid war and the fading dream of the Confederacy, a wounded soldier and a destitute widow discover the true meaning of Christmas – and of sacrificial love.

Recently widowed, Aletta Prescott struggles to hold life together for herself and her six-year old son. With the bank threatening to evict, she discovers an advertisement for the Women’s Relief Society auction and applies for a position – only to discover it’s been filled. Then a chance meeting with a wounded soldier offers another opportunity – and friendship. But can Aletta trust this man?

Captain Jake Winston, a revered Confederate sharpshooter, suffered a head wound at the Battle of Chickamauga. When doctors deliver their diagnosis, Jake fears losing not only his greatest skill but his very identity. As he heals, Jake is ordered to assist with a local Women’s Relief Society auction. He respectfully objects. Kowtowing to a bunch of “crinolines” isn’t his idea of soldiering. But orders are orders, and he soon discovers this group of ladies – one, in particular – is far more than he bargained for.

Set against the backdrop and history of the Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee, Christmas at Carnton is a story of hope renewed and faith restored at Christmas.

MY THOUGHTS

Few things delight my reader heart more than a novel by Tamera Alexander. And the fact that it's a Christmas novella to introduce her brand-new series makes it that much more enjoyable! In her trademark style, Tamera Alexander pens a story of love and loss in the setting of the War Between the States. Skillfully blending historic figures with masterfully created fictional characters, Alexander brings to life the heartaches and trials-and rare moments of joy-of this tumultuous era. A compelling story, magnificent prose, and a quiet but steadfast measure of faith make this more than just a feel-good holiday read but one with depth that will encourage your faith and remind you of the Hope this blessed season brings. Don't miss this charming short novel!

A Baxter Family Christmas

A Baxter Family Christmas
Karen Kingsbury
(Simon & Schuster/Howard Books)
ISBN: 978-1451687569
272 pages/October 2016/$19.99 Hardcover

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury comes A Baxter Family Christmas, a life-changing story of love and hope featuring the Baxter family.

Whether you’re meeting the Baxter family for the first time, or finding them all over again...A Baxter Family Christmas will leave fingerprints on your heart forever.

Two years have passed since the terrible car accident that took the life of John Baxter’s daughter, Erin, her husband and three of their four daughters. Prompted by grief, and missing his daughter, John has invited a stranger for Christmas Eve dinner—Kendra Bryant, the transplant recipient who now has Erin’s heart.

In light of their father’s idea, Ashley and her brother Luke don’t think it’s right. They want to protect their ten-year-old niece, Amy—the only surviving member of the accident. But John is determined and believes meeting this woman is something his deceased daughter would want.

At the same time, Maddie West, the eighteen-year-old daughter of Brooke Baxter West, is praying for meaning this Christmas. Could she find it in a newfound friendship with a boy she never expected to see again? Maddie believes in miracles, especially at Christmastime, but this is a stretch even she can’t imagine.

Meanwhile, Kendra Bryant has been struggling these past few years to find purpose in the tragedy that gave her a second chance. She believes the invitation to see the Baxters and witness their unwavering faith in God can instill peace and happiness back into her life.

Heartwarming and touching, filled with love and redemption, A Baxter Family Christmas brings together two families in the aftermath of loss and in the midst of an unfolding love story, all with the help of one very special child.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Karen Kingsbury, #1 New York Times bestselling novelist, is America’s favorite inspirational storyteller, with more than twenty-five million copies of her award-winning books in print. Her last dozen titles have topped bestseller lists and many of her novels are under development with Hallmark Films and as major motion pictures. She lives in Tennessee with her husband, Don, and their five sons, three of whom are adopted from Haiti. Their actress daughter, Kelsey, lives nearby and is married to Christian recording artist Kyle Kupecky. The couple recently welcomed their first child, Hudson.

MY THOUGHTS

I have only read one of Karen Kingsbury's books in the past but since I love Christmas novellas, I decided to give this one a try when it landed in my mailbox. Kingsbury has written a heart-wrenching tale that will delight fans of her Baxter Family series who eager to catch up with these much-loved characters. The grief that the family has experienced will resonate with many who dread facing the holidays due to an empty chair at the table. This novella is a quick and easy read but personally, I was a bit disappointed as I found parts of it unrealistic and simplistic in regards to grief. Many of her long-time fans rave about it, however, so check it out and decide for yourself!

MY THOUGHTS

I love Christmas novellas and this is a perfect one to read next to the tree with your favorite hot drink! Cindy Woodsmall creates a heartwarming story that touches the heart. As a well-known, best-selling author of Amish fiction, she expertly crafts characters and settings that draw the reader into the story. I ached for Rose and Joel and the hurts they experienced, although those are what brought them together in their sudden marriage of convenience. Woodsmall weaves a tender tale of love and new beginnings wrapped in the beauty of Christmas. Don't miss The Angel of Forest Hill!

MY THOUGHTS

I love Liz Johnson's books! This one is a heart-stopping read in more ways than one! My mistake was tucking this in my purse and reading it while waiting for an appointment; it was perhaps the first time I was unhappy to hear my name called because I had to stop reading mid-scene! Zach, Kristi, and Cody immediately wrapped themselves around my heart. Of course, as a nurse, I loved the medical angle of the story. Johnson packs a lot into this small volume: pulse-pounding danger, raw grief, fierce protectiveness, and tender love, weaving it all together in a gasp-inducing story that kept me turning pages as fast as I could. Perfect as a stocking stuffer or a gift for your own enjoyment, Hazardous Holiday is a must-read!

Restoring Christmas

Restoring Christmas
Cynthia Ruchti
(Worthy Inspired)
ISBN: 978-1617957079
October 2017/240 pages

Alexis Blake set out to restore a neglected building.

What she didn’t expect was to restore a life…

Alexis has one chance to land her own show on the Heart-and-Home Network, and nothing–not an uncooperative client, a job site without indoor plumbing, or a challenging videographer–is going to stand in her way.

Elsie Raymond, at seventy-plus, is far from the ideal client, but she knows exactly what she wants her fieldstone house to look like, and no designer can tell her otherwise.

Gabe Langley, the man with the camera, is caught in the middle and it is his wisdom and warmth that just may be the bridge that will bring these two women together. Can they restore more than just a house and save Christmas memories from being lost forever?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Cynthia Ruchti tells stories hemmed in Hope through her novels, novellas, devotions, and nonfiction, and through speaking for women’s events/retreats and writers’ conferences/workshops. She draws from 33 years of experience writing and producing the 15-minute daily radio broadcast, “The Heartbeat of the Home.” Her books have received recognition from RT Reviewers’ Choice, PW Starred Review, Selah Awards, Christian Retailing’s BEST Awards, CLASSeminars Award of Excellence, Golden Scroll Awards, and more. She serves as Professional Relations Liaison for American Christian Fiction Writers, is a board member of the Deliver Hope ministry, and is part of the worship team at her church. She and her husband live in the heart of Wisconsin, not far from their three children and five grandchildren.

MY THOUGHTS

From my first glimpse of the title, I knew this was going to be another of Cynthia Ruchti's extraordinary books, and I was right. Restoring Christmas is so much more than a Christmas novella that will get you "in the mood" for the season. In her signature style, Ruchti pens a captivating tale infused with hope, wisdom, and love that will stir your soul even as it touches your heart. Alexis, Elsie, and Gabe made me forget I was reading fiction as they drew me into their world. All three bear scars that impact their interactions with each other as well as their views of Christmas and the project of restoring Elsie's house. To say too much would be to spoil the experience of reading it for yourself, but suffice it to say that this is a book to savor, contemplate, and read again and again. And I highly suggest reading it with a highlighter in hand as there or so many nuggets of wisdom tucked among the pages. Restoring Christmas is certain to become a much-loved classic. Don't miss it.

One Enchanted Christmas

Once Enchanted Christmas
Melissa Tagg
ASIN: B017V6PZGO
December 2015/423 KB/113 pages/$0.99

Last December, mystery author Maren Grant had the most perfect night of her life. On a glimmering winter evening, she got to watch the photo shoot for her very first book and ended up on a magical date with the cover model himself—Colin Renwycke.

Fast forward one year. This December, with a looming deadline, restless spirit and her creative spark long since gone, Maren is desperate to get unstuck. And she can’t get Colin out of her head…or his year-old open invitation to spend a couple weeks writing at his family’s farm.

Drew Renwycke never planned to come home and take over the Renwycke family farm. But he’s spent too many years watching his siblings unravel, including his brother, Colin, after one terrible family mistake. If moving to Maple Valley, Iowa, renovating an old farmhouse and switching careers is what it takes to put the Renwycke family back together, he’ll do it.

But his simple plan upends when a scrappy author lands on his doorstep. And she just might be the key to coaxing his brother home. But what if he wants her all to himself? Drew will have to choose between his Christmas wish and the enchantment of a holiday romance that just might be the happy ending they all long for.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Melissa Tagg is a former reporter, current nonprofit grant writer and total Iowa girl. She writes romantic comedies in the banter-filled style of her favorite 1930s and 40s classic films. When she's not writing she can be found hanging out with the coolest family ever, watching old movies, and daydreaming about her next book. Melissa loves connecting with readers at www.melissatagg.com and on Facebook and Instagram.

MY THOUGHTS

Charming. Delightful. Winsome. These are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of Melissa Tagg's writing, and they definitely describe One Enchanted Christmas. Once again, Tagg has released an adorable story written in her unique and enchanting style. Few authors write Rom-Com (romantic comedy) as well as she does, with the perfect blend of sweetness and sass and characters that walk off the page and into the reader's heart. Beneath the lighthearted banter and romance, however, Tagg weaves a subtle but sure thread addressing the deeper issues of the heart. I preordered this novella, impatiently awaited its arrival on my Kindle, and read it in one sitting. The only thing that would have made it better is if it had been a full-length novel. I'm eagerly anticipating the next book in Tagg's Walker Family series, coming in Spring 2016. In the meantime, don't miss this wonderful story at an incredible price!

An Endless Christmas

An Endless Christmas
Cynthia Ruchti
(Worthy Inspired)
ISBN: 978-1617955877
October 2015/240 pages/Hardcover/$15.99

Too many people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for disaster.

Christmas takes a very different turn when the guests of honor break up instead of announcing their engagement. Trapped with his family, they learn that love looks different than either imagined. Both in their eighties, Dodie and Wilson Binder celebrate every Christmas as if it were their last. This year, their grandson Micah is planning to ask his girlfriend, Katie, to marry him so they can celebrate with the whole family. But things go very wrong when she says, “no.” Now they are stuck. Too many people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for disaster. But sometimes too much is just enough. Especially when it’s Christmas.

MY THOUGHTS

I always eagerly anticipate curling up with a novel by Cynthia Ruchti and, once again, she delights with this latest release. Ruchti specializes in finding hope among chaos, and there is certainly plenty of chaos in this tiny house crammed with family! I wanted to wrap Katie up in a big hug. I can't imagine being in her situation but am impressed with how she persevered. The entire Binder clan wrapped itself around my heart, especially those dear grandparents. Beautiful lessons of life, love, and family are tucked in this gem of a story. This is a book to be read and reread every year. Don't miss it, and remember to treasure each moment!

There's no getting out of Christmas now, despite Katie rejecting Micah's marriage proposal. Cozy up this holiday season with Cynthia Ruchti's new novella, An Endless Christmas. The Binder family celebrates every Christmas as if it were their last. Too many people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for disaster. But sometimes too much is just enough. Especially when it’s Christmas.

Celebrate the holidays with Cynthia and An Endless Christmas by entering her $100 Target gift card giveaway!

Keeping Christmas

Keeping Christmas
Dan Walsh
(Revell)
ISBN: 978-0800721190
August 2015/224 pages/Hardcover/$14.99

Stan opened the ugly ornaments box and pulled out the top three ornaments, the ones wrapped in green paper, the kids' favorites, and set them on the coffee table. He picked up the first one, the biggest one--Anna's blue pinecone--and began to unwrap it. Without thinking, Judith walked up, stopped him, and gently took it out of his hand. She wrapped it back up, set it carefully in the box. Then picked up the other two ornaments, put them in the box, and closed the flaps.

"What's the matter?" Stan said. "Did I do something wrong?"

"I don't think I can do this."

Nothing is more beautiful than family

For the first time since their children were born, empty nesters Judith and Stan Winters spent Thanksgiving without the kids, and it's looking like Christmas will be the same. Judith can't bring herself to even start decorating for the holiday; her kids always hung the first ornaments on the tree, ornaments they had made each year since they were toddlers. Sure, the ornaments were strange-looking--some were downright ugly--but they were tradition.

With Judith refusing to decorate the bare spruce tree in their living room, Stan's only hope for saving the holiday is found in a box of handmade ornaments . . .

MY THOUGHTS

Dan Walsh is known for well-crafted books that touch the heart, and Keeping Christmas continues to meet that description. Expert character and story development results in authentic personalities and situations that will resonate with many in the empty-nester years, as well as serve as a cautionary tale for those with children still at home. (In fact, at times, I became a bit annoyed with Judith's despair and complete obsession over her children's absence and the fact that she had developed no interests outside of her family. I only get annoyed with realistic people in the books I read!) Walsh skillfully highlights the different perspectives and reactions of Judith and Stan as they approach the upcoming holidays: Judy laments, paralyzed by grief, and Stan continues his normal routine, secretly enjoying the peace and quiet. From the beautiful cover to the final page, Keeping Christmas is a wonderful way to start the holiday season. Don't miss it.
