MY THOUGHTS

Dan Walsh is known for well-crafted books that touch the heart, and Keeping Christmas continues to meet that description. Expert character and story development results in authentic personalities and situations that will resonate with many in the empty-nester years, as well as serve as a cautionary tale for those with children still at home. (In fact, at times, I became a bit annoyed with Judith's despair and complete obsession over her children's absence and the fact that she had developed no interests outside of her family. I only get annoyed with realistic people in the books I read!) Walsh skillfully highlights the different perspectives and reactions of Judith and Stan as they approach the upcoming holidays: Judy laments, paralyzed by grief, and Stan continues his normal routine, secretly enjoying the peace and quiet. From the beautiful cover to the final page, Keeping Christmas is a wonderful way to start the holiday season. Don't miss it.

MY THOUGHTS

Oh, how I love Jen Turano's books! She immediately became a must-read author for me with her first release back in 2012, and she keeps getting even better. While In Good Company is a stand-alone novel, it is the second in a series with overlapping characters which began with After a Fashion, which I reviewed here. Turano continues to delight with charming characters who end up in awkward situations and at odds with those around them. I loved Millie and her passion for children, as well as her determination to allow them time to play and get dirty occasionally. Her clever, albeit unorthodox, methods of discipline made me laugh. Turano weaves a wonderful relationship between Millie and Everett against all odds. My favorite aspect of this and all her novels, however, lies in her command of language. The articulation and locution of her characters adds to the charm of the novel and lends a fresh and often humorous tone to the story. You'll be In Good Company with this on your reading list!

MY THOUGHTS

I have been eagerly anticipating this book ever since I read Kristy Cambron's amazing debut, The Butterfly and the Violin, last year (click here for my review of that book), and I was not disappointed. In a style reminiscent of best-selling author Susan Meissner, Cambron skillfully weaves together a contemporary story with a haunting and compelling tale from the days of WWII. While the stories seem may initially seem disconnected at first, as the novel progresses their paths are brought closer and closer together. A Sparrow in Terezin can be read as a stand-alone, but references to Cambron's first novel will be easier to grasp if both books are read in sequence. And trust me, you don't want to miss either one! Pulsating with realism and emotion, this tale held me spellbound as I follwed Kája and Sara's journeys. Don't miss this beautiful story of hope and faith. A must for your spring reading list!

MY THOUGHTS

Whew! DiAnn Mills is on my short list of must-read suspense authors and Double Cross proves why. She wasted no time in pulling me into the story, and the prologue had barely begun before my heart was pounding wildly. A master storyteller, Mills makes every word count and weaves multiple threads into this tale brimming with intrigue, danger, and a bit of romance. Her zeal for research is obvious as she crafts her story around the workings of the FBI Houston office and the Houston Police Department. I'm always a little amazed at the level of detail she provides and sometimes wonder when the FBI will turn the tables and interview her! LOL Memorable and sympathetic characters touched my heart and personally connected me to the story, especially Daniel's grandparents. Mills lives up to her tagline Expect the Unexpected as a variety of twists and turns kept me guessing who could be trusted in the race to discover who was targeting the elderly. My one mistake was picking up this book when I couldn't read it straight through, and it was torturous waiting until I could get back to it. This is a stand-alone, so if you haven't read Firewall, the first book in the series, that is no problem, although I highly recommend it as well. (My review of Firewall is here.)
